    2. EDWARD ANDREWS
    3. I checked the Balahullish OPR on Scotland's People and they don't begin until 1830s so Ann would not be recorded. I'd also try Lochaber and North Argyll Family History Group http://www.lochaberandnorthargyllfamilyhistorygroup.org.uk/ Edward Andrews EDWARD ANDREWS <edward.andrews@btinternet.com> wrote: What you have to realise is that Glencoe is an Episcopalian area, and even though the Parish (Presbyterian) Church is called St Munda's Glencoe it is in Ballachulish. I'm sorry I need to ask you a number of questions - where did you get the Rankins being strict Presbyterians? The reason I ask is that the term Presbyterian is not a Church of Scotland term - they would use the term Auld Kirk and the Highlands didn't have much of the Original Succession. It could have been that Father Rankin worked at the Slate quarry and lived in Carnoch which is at the bottom of Glencoe (and has a brilliant restaurant where I had my Sunday lunch a month ago, having worshipped in St Munda's.) You would expect Ann to be in the OPR Birth and Baptism papers` - don't know how far back teh St Munda's records go back, if you don't find here there then either she was not Baptised - which has theological implications, or she was baptised other than in the Parish Church. The History of Presbyterianism in Scotland has been complicated by all the splits and reunions which there have been, see http://uk.geocities.com/edward.andrews@btinternet.com/chart.html If Pa Rankin came into the district he could have taken Ann home to be baptized, especially if he was not Auld Kirk. I would be trying to find out something about the records of the Ballachulish Slate Company from the Scottish List. You might find a Rankin living in Carnoch, and you might find a wee community all from the same original area. As far as Donald Campbell in Glasgow in 1835 is concerned it is a rather common name. Anything else would be helpful. Campbell is not a name I would associate with Glencoe. If the Rankins were not strict Presbyterians Mrs R could have taken young Ann over to St Mary's (Episcopalian) which have records from 1770. Hope that this helps Edward Andrews My name is Gillian Johnston, and I have just joined the list. I am trying to find out more about the Glencoe area of Argyll, Scotland. My Rankin and Campbell forebears came from there - Ann Rankin was born 20 Dec 1817 at Carnoch, Glencoe, but I have been unable to find any records of her birth on Scotlands People or elsewhere. They were strict Presbyterians, and she also married Donald Campbell, a Presbyterian, in 1835 in Glasgow. They migrated to Australia in 1854 with their children. Any information on the Church and its records in that period would be appreciated, best wishes, Gillian South Australia _____________________________ To contact the list admin send an email to: PRESBYTERIAN-admin@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PRESBYTERIAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message _____________________________ To contact the list admin send an email to: PRESBYTERIAN-admin@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PRESBYTERIAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
