Hi Joan, I looked at the 1880 census again and added to what you listed. The census also has - William's father was born in SC and his mother born in TN. This makes William born abt. 1855 in GA. and Mary b. abt. 1856 in TN. Their first born (Mary) was born in TN about 1876. Chances are that Wm. and Mary probably married sometime in 1870's in TN. So, I checked the Marriage records for Hamilton County, TN 1857-1952 and found a William N. Pennington married Mary Melvina Helton 22 Jun 1873. That could fit and is worth checking further. There is a Wm. N. born in Dade, GA in the 1860 census. At this time Wm. is 6 yrs. old (1854), his father is James who was b. in SC; mother is Mary A age 25 b. TN, Jasper N. 12 yrs. Julie E. 2 yrs and Susanna is 10 months. Both the 1880 and 1860 census have this Wm's father born in SC; Wm. birth year is in the ballpark. Further William and Mary's children, Mary(possibly named after Wm's mother), John (?) and James (named after Wm.'s father). Sometimes in genealogy we have to use the 'process of elimination' to find our ancestors. Maybe looking into the marriage in Hamilton TN the record might give you Wm's parents. On Mary A. (Dau. of Wm and Mary Pennington) b. abt. 1875-1876. If you think that Mary A married this George Marks, I would check into the 1910 census in TX. The census would have her profession and also list their son James Andrew at the age of 17. Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful. Maybe someone else on the two mailing lists can help.
