Joan, I'm not familiar with the Tenn. area history. None in Hamilton Cty. But I found 2 Mary Heltons: Mary born in 1854 (5 yrs old) in Cannon, TN Roll M653_1242 pg. 386, in the house of Mary Helton. The other Mary BC Helton in the household of Solomon Helton. Roll 653-1268 Pg. 369 in Polk Cty. Interestingly, (if this is your Wm. and Mary), In 1870 William N or W Pennington is in Dist. 4 of Hamilton Cty, TN Roll 593_1532, pg. 354, image 163. Household of James 53 yrs , wife may be deceased) William is 16, Juda E. 13, Susan A 11, Nancy 6, and James KP is 18yrs. So sometime between 1870 and 1880 your William married Mary in TN and left for Texas, showing up on the 1880 census. That is if we are on the right road.
