My sister-in-law died and left me her family records (includes about 8-10 different family names). I would welcome suggestions on how to organize these and how to incorporate them with the records I already have. There are 5 large boxes. So far, when I open a box and look through a few papers or letters, I am simply overwhelmed and just close the box and put it away. There is little organization present. Any help is appreciated. I can tell you how my own records are kept. I use Hollenger Boxes (like the National Archives and which are available through the Hollenger Corporation, POB 8360, Fredericksburg Virginia 22404-8360, or 1-800-634-0491...call for catalog) which are grey and hold 8x11 file folders (or legal size if you want). I use one box for each family (or two or whatever is needed). Depending on what I have, I label each file folder and place it in the box which sits on a shelf with an outside label of its contents...such as Pennington Family (or Jasper Green Pennington Family, etc.). The boxes are acid free (and acid free file folders can also be bought) and keeps all those records, including photographs sorted. My study has about 60 of those boxes including my own families as well as others which I am working on.
