Does anyone know how to obtain military records from the Navy for someone who was not in a War or major Conflict? Are they available to the public? The Ancestry records while are good do not seem to cover just anyone during time periods between the wars. I have searched and not found my Grandfather's records among them and I am wondering if it is because he wasn't in a major War or Conflict? My Grandfather, James Conway Pennington, was a baker in the Navy. I understand from his daughter that he also won metals for his swimming skills and taught others to swim also. His wife, my Grandmother, Elsie Marie Pennington told me that she had a friend who set her up on a blind date with Conway after he got out of the Navy. They were married in Checotah, OK in 1922 and I don't believe they had a long courtship. He was born in 1901 so he probably was in the Navy from ~1917-~1922? He lived in Oklahoma, I am not sure if they lived in Ada where they lived at the time they moved to Oklahoma in 1915. I am assuming he lived in Ada, OK when he joined the Navy. Does anyone have any advice for me how to get his Miliary records. His daughter was told when he died at the young age of 52, in 1953 that he could not be buried as a Veteran because he was not in a War.
