    1. [PRA] First Issue of Pedigrees on CD

    3. My Pedigrees CD arrived Monday. I thought that getting away from a printed format was a mistake, but after looking at the results, I must admit I was wrong. I carried my laptop computer out to our screen room and read through the issue while enjoying the birds and the sweet smell of the viburnum hedge which is blooming here now. Those who worked on the CD did an outstanding job of formatting the material for viewing on a computer screen. There were even some color pictures and maps -- definitely a first in the 39-year history of the Pedigrees. A hint for those who have not used the Acrobat Reader program extensively: click the X to close the table of contents at the left, and then click on the View menu and then select the full screen display. That shows the page only, without all the distracting menus and such. Just press escape to get back to the regular screen. Scrolling a page at a time was easy with the PgUp or PgDn keys, but the up and down arrow keys work also, and were more comfortable to use in the lower right corner of the keyboard. By the way, you don't need the latest model computer to run the Acrobat Reader program. I was using a eight year old IBM ThinkPad 600, which has a 300 MHz Pentium II processor. It's a bit slow on internet surfing, but worked great for this. Congratulations and a big attaboy to all who worked on this first electronic edition of the Pedigrees for doing such a great job of adapting the content for reading on a computer. Paul A. 3. Paul, Not only is the format fairly easy to read, but there are other advantages. When using Adobe Acrobat, you can quickly search through the material, by hitting either Ctrl F or going to Edit on the menu bar and hitting find. This is exciting because it will allow you to search through 100 plus pages in only minutes. It also opens up all kinds of possibilities for those who want to share information such as land documents, marriage licenses, or photos. Space is not going to be at a premium, the editor can include any and all of someone's article without worrying whether it will fit. I'm sure that during the next few issues, Colleen will learn a lot more about putting it together, and we will all learn how to utilize the Pedigree in a much more useful manor. 3. Paul: Thank you for your positive comments and suggestions. Many PRA Members worked on this first issue on a CD to help make it a memorable one. Most of the credit goes to Colleen Blizard, Editor of the Pedigrees, who worked very hard to make our first issue of the Pennington Pedigrees on a CD very special. The various contributors of articles and material learned much from this first issue on a CD and I believe our Members will continue to see improvements as each successive CD is published. Our hope is that more PRA Members and Pennington researchers will send in their pictures, articles and other material to share with other researchers. The possibilities are almost unlimited and as each CD is published, we'll learn more. If anybody wants to share their pictures or other material or wants to submit an article or family history, please contact Colleen Blizard at Csblizard@aol.com.
