My great-great-grandfather's brother John H. Pennington was born in 1848 in Maine, probably in Houlton, Aroostook County. He was living in Rochester, Monroe County, New York in 1896. His son Frank Frederick "Fred" Pennington, born in about 1872, moved to Guatemala. I have found a John H. Pennington in Central and South America and wonder if he's Fred's father. In about 1888, the government of Colombia granted a contract to a British company owned by "an Englishman John H. Pennington" to build a railroad between Bogota and Girardot, Colombia. (Source: Hernan Horna, Transport Modernization and Entrepreneurship in Nineteenth Century Colombia: Cisneros & Friends (Stockholm: Almqvist & Wiksell International, 1992), page 138.) Ellis Island passenger lists show a John H. Pennington arrived in New York City from Venezuela in 1893. Passenger lists on Ancestry.com show that a John H. Pennington/J. H. Pennington landed in New Orleans, Louisiana, between 1896 and 1905 on ships arriving from Belize, Costa Rica and Cuba. Based on his age on the lists, this John H. Pennington was born between 1851 and 1858. A passenger list dated 9 June 1905 says J. H. Pennington, age 50, manager of the Cuba Tropical Fruit Company, had left from Havana, Cuba, and his final destination was New Orleans. Maine is listed as his "country of last permanent residence." A list of passengers arriving in New Orleans from Panama in 1912 lists a J. H. Pennington, born in about 1874 in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Is this the same person who was born between 1851 and 1858 according to earlier lists? Was the John H. Pennington who contracted to build a railroad in Colombia and frequently traveled between Central America and New Orleans the same John H. Pennington who was born in 1848 in Maine? Thanks for any help. Rick Crume Glyndon, Minnesota Pennington Research Association Group #17
