Pennington (short Bio) This was forwarded to me by Wanda Pennington Parker. Melinda, I came across this while looking for RV Parks in South Dakota. I don't know what group he belongs to but thought I should pass it long. Wanda JOHN L. PENNINGTON John L. Pennington (1821 – July 11, 1900) was a newspaper publisher, an Alabama state senator, and the fifth Governor of Dakota Territory. Biography Pennington was born at the town of New Berne in Wake County, North Carolina. He started a career in journalism by working as an apprentice for the "Raleigh Star." In 1856, Pennington founded the "Columban" in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1857, he founded the "Daily Progress in New Berne, North Carolina. After leaving the newspaper business in 1866, Pennington became a member of the Republican party and joined the carpetbaggers in Alabama, where he served as a member of the Alabama legislature until 1873. On January 1, 1874, Pennington was appointed as Governor of Dakota Territory by President Ulysses S. Grant after a recommendation by George E. Spencer. During Pennington's time as Governor, the gold rush was starting in the Black Hills; and, railroad construction and immigration had both slowed. People in the Black Hills wanted control over their own political future; and, separatists wanted to form their own territory called Lincoln. In the spring of 1877, Judge Granville was assigned to the Black Hills judicial district; and as a result, the separatist movement ended. Because of his lack of popularity in the Black Hills and negative reports on his character in Yankton, Pennington was replaced by William Alanson Howard as Governor of Dakota Territory in April of 1878. Governor Howard appointed Pennington as collector of internal revenue for Dakota Territory. In 1885, Pennington returned to journalism and established the "Weekly Telegram" at Yankton. In September 1883, Pennington attended the constitutional convention in Sioux Falls, where he opposed dividing Dakota Territory into two states. In 1891, Pennington left Yankton, South Dakota to resume journalism in the South. He died in Anniston, Alabama. 2. Thank you for the short bio about John L. Pennington but at this point I can't say if he is connected. I will save the information just in case. The Pennington I am looking for is Ronald and his father Walter who resided in Pennsylvania in the early 1900-to mid 1900. If you run across them I would love to hear from you. Colleen

    1. [PRA] Making Corrections to Data and Reporting Errors
    2. Gene Pennington
    3. I found this on 24-7 Family History Circle's website and thought it was interesting. Many of us has have asked how to correct data entry errors made on Ancestry. FYI, a similar feature is available to PRA Members who use the PRA Member's only website hosted by MyFamily.com for making corrections to the JFMF or a member submitted Family Tree (gedcom file). You work with your Group Leader to make any corrections or if you don't have a Group Leader work with Carmen Johnson, ARD responsible for the PRA Member's only website. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Chairman Research Director Pennington Research Association, Inc. www.PenningtonResearch.org ======================================================================= FAQ: Making Corrections to Data and Reporting Errors One of the questions I hear often through e-mail or on the blog is "How do I correct my ancestor's information on Ancestry?" To enable users to correct erroneous information found on the site, Ancestry provides a Comments and Corrections feature. This could include transcription errors, the addition of birth or maiden names (e.g., if a known name change has occurred), nicknames (to increase search options that will locate this record), name variations (if these occur for records), and incorrect originals (i.e., the original record is incorrect). To add a comment or correction: 1. Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page 2. Click the Add an Alternate Name link on the next page 3. Enter information in the First Name and Last Name fields 4. For the Reason, indicate any of those previously indicated 5. Provide a brief but helpful explanation of the information you enter 6. Click the Submit Correction button Once it's live, people searching for your ancestor will be able to find them using the alternate spelling you have provided. You can find answers to many more questions like this in the Ancestry Knowledge Base. In addition to the library of FAQs, there are also tabs where you can get Live Support via chat (Monday - Friday: 09:00 AM - 07:00 PM EST) or Email Ancestry Support. 2. Sorry I dont see the connection between the Pennington I queried about and the message you sent me. I am interested in Ronald Pennington who was born to Walter Pennington and Ella Smith Earl in Pennsylvania 1914. Ronald is said to have been married to Ann Palimeri. He shot and killed his father and went to prison for 10 years. When he was released it was not long before he died. If you have any information on this family I would love to learn of it.

    1. [PRA] National Archives and Footnote Launch Project to Digitize Historic Documents Online
    2. Gene Pennington
    3. Below is a press release about a new research website. You can join it for free and do lot's of searches but if you want to see the actual record or make a copy of it, you have to join. Membership fees are $9.99 per month or $99.00 per year. I joined for free and did a search on "Pennington". Hundreds of matches returned with two (2) of them belong to my ancestors and several which do not but interestingly enough, there are even old FBI files available and several Penningtons can be found in them. One was a record in Southern Claims Commission and the other a Civil War Pension record. I'm not sure if I'll join or not but I have to admit I'm tempted. This looks like a great website to at the very least explore. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Chairman Research Director Pennington Research Association, Inc. www.PenningtonResearch.org =================================================================== The following announcement is a joint press release written by Footnote, Inc. (http://www.footnote.com/) and the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration: Washington, DC and Lindon, UT - Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein and Footnote, Inc. CEO Russell Wilding today announced an agreement to digitize selected records from the vast holdings of the National Archives. The 4.5 million pages that have been digitized so far are now available at www.footnote.com/nara. This non-exclusive agreement, beginning with the sizeable collection of materials currently on microfilm, will enable researchers and the general public to access millions of newly-digitized images of the National Archives historic records on a subscription basis from the Footnote website. By February 6, the digitized materials will also be available at no charge in National Archives research rooms in Washington D.C. and regional facilities across the country. After an interval of five years, all images digitized through this agreement will be available at no charge through the National Archives website. "This is an exciting step forward for the National Archives," said Professor Weinstein. "It will immediately allow much greater access to approximately 4.5 million pages of important documents that are currently available only in their original format or on microfilm. The digitization of documents will also enhance our efforts to preserve our original records." "The partnership with the National Archives will expand significantly the content we are able to offer professional and amateur researchers," said Footnote CEO Russell Wilding. "We will continue to add millions of original documents and images monthly. " The following represents a portion of the millions of historic documents that will be made available as part of the National Archives - Footnote Agreement. Papers of the Continental Congress (1774-89). The Papers of the Continental Congress include Journals of the Congress, reports of its committees, papers submitted by state Governments, and correspondence of its Presidents and other officers with diplomatic representatives of the United States abroad, officers in the Continental Army, State and local officials, and private persons. Among the Papers are copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Northwest Ordinance, the Constitution, and other documents instrumental in molding the new Government. Also included are drafts of treaties and commercial agreements, papers relating to expenditures and loans, reports of military progress during the Revolution, and papers relating to Indian treaties and tribes. Mathew B Brady Collection of Civil War Photographs. One of the largest and most frequently researched bodies of Civil War photography anywhere, this series originated with some 6,000 glass plate negatives acquired by the War Department from Brady in 1874-1875. Encompassing images by the enterprising Brady and more than a dozen other photographers, including Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan, directly or indirectly associated with him, the series ranges from Brady Gallery portraits of leading military and political personalities of the 1850's-1860's to views of units, battlefields, ruins, landscapes, camps, hospitals, prisons, fortifications, bridges, and railroads from Fredericksburg to Chickamauga to Atlanta. Southern Claims Commission. In the 1870s, some southerners claimed compensation from the U.S. government for items used by the Union Army, ranging from corn and horses, to trees and church buildings. The claim files contain a wealth of genealogical information and they consist of petitions, inventories of properties lost, testimony of family members and others, reports, and certificates submitted by claimants to the Southern Claims Commission as proof of loyalty to the Federal Government and value of property damaged or lost during the Civil War. The materials are arranged by state and thereunder by the name of the claimant. Name Index to Civil War and Later Pension Files. Pension applications for service in the U.S. Army between 1861 and 1900, grouped according to the units in which the veterans served. The name index to the Civil War and Later Pension Application Files contains over 3 million index entries documenting the applications of soldiers, sailors and their widows. The index is the entry point for one of the most significant bodies of Federal records documenting the lives of volunteers who served in the Civil War, the western Indian Wars, and the Spanish American War. Investigative Case Files of the Bureau of Investigation, 1908-22. The Bureau of Investigation investigated real and perceived threats to the nation and its citizens before it became the FBI. The materials compiled by the BOI from 1908 to 1922 consist of an index to the investigative case files, general investigative records, investigative records relating to German Aliens from 1915 through 1920, investigative records relating to Mexican Neutrality Violations from 1909 through 1921, and investigative records transferred from the Department of Justice from 1920 through 1921. The records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the person or organization investigated. 3. In 2000, MyFamily.com, Inc. acquired RootsWeb.com as one of its network of online sites. Through its support, RootsWeb has been able to remain the largest, completely free, genealogy site on the Web. In December of 2006, MyFamily.com, Inc. announced that it has changed its name to The Generations Network, Inc. "We felt now was a good time to establish a company identity expansive enough to encompass everything that we do, but also completely focused on the family ... across the generations," said Tim Sullivan, the company's President and CEO. The company will continue to serve families online through its portfolio of leading brands and websites. For more information on The Generations Network, visit http://www.thegenerationsnetwork.com. ==================================================== REPRINTS. 3. Sorry, I didn't intend for that message to Tillie to go to the PRA list. Oh, well... On 1/8/07, TPWMS71@aol.com <TPWMS71@aol.com> wrote: > > Good morning Melinda. 3. Tillie, I was mostly teasing you about blocking me. I just don't think my new address was in email address book. I think you asked me for my address is the last email but now I can't remember now what you were wanting to mail me. I have so many projects juggling about. Melinda Pennington 4 Elizabeth Court Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889 Just so you know, I just got my Fall issue this past Sat. Gene and Guye still haven't gotten there's either the last I heard. Hopefully, you will get it today or tomorrow. If you don't get it in a week, email me and I will contact the printer. I saw the announcement where they chose 3 of the audit committee members. Don't remember the names chosen. Its raining here in NJ today. Melinda On 1/8/07, TPWMS71@aol.com <TPWMS71@aol.com> wrote: > > Good morning Melinda. It is a beautiful day here in > Indiana.
