Another update on the missing Fall 2006 Issue of the Pennington Pedigrees (Volume 38, Number 2). Good news from our printer, Joshua Pincoske, of R. C. Brayshaw & Co., Inc. In a message I just received, he says the missing Fall 2006 Issue of the Pennington Pedigrees (Volume 38, Number 2) was mailed yesterday (2/14/07). Yea! He mailed them using either media or first class mail which ever will get them to us the quickest. He thinks we should start seeing them in our homes starting Saturday. He apologizes for the problem and says that they will make sure this never happens again. An update on the missing Fall 2006 Issue of the Pennington Pedigrees. We think we identified the problem. Now we're in the process of getting the Pedigrees mailed to those Members who did not receive their Fall 2006 Issue of the Pedigrees. I'll also send a message to those Members who contacted me about the delivery problem. In short, our printer lost 2 sheets of mailing labels with about 23 PRA Members names and addresses on them. Because the sheet was lost, those 23 copies intended for those PRA Members were never mailed. Nobody knew there was a problem until some Members started asking when the Pedigrees would be delivered. It took a couple of weeks to identify the mistake, once we knew there was a problem. Now we're shipping the extra Pedigrees that were sent, my mistake, to our Sales Manager, back to the printer who will see that they are mailed. At this moment, I don't know exactly where we are with this "fix" but we should hear soon from our printer that the missing Pedigrees have been mailed. As soon as I hear they've been mailed, I'll post a message on the PRA mail list and send a message to those Members who contacted me about the delivery problem. Again, I apologize for the errors that were made and we're going to work very hard to ensure they do not happen again. Can anyone on the list identify this Dennis Pennington?? Dennis Pennington was born in Virginia in May of 1776, and came to the area which is now Corydon in 1802. For twenty-nine years, he was a territorial and state legislator. In 1816, he served in Indiana's first Constitutional Convention. As an anti-slavery man, he was quoted as saying, "Let us be on our guard when our convention men are chosen that they be men opposed to slavery." When the 1816 Constitution was written and Indiana admitted, the Hoosier State went into the Union without slavery. In 1825, Pennington ran for Lieutenant Governor, but was defeated. By appointment and later by election, he was also Sheriff of Harrison County. In 1809, Harrison County awarded Dennis Pennington the contract for the construction of Indiana's first State Capitol. It was originally erected as a court house, and cost approximately $1500. The forty foot square building was erected of limestone. The exposed surfaces of the building were undressed, using only rocks that had broken with a nearly square face. The foundation was placed three feet in the ground and made two and one-half feet thick , and the room fifteen feet high. The lower floor was made of stone flagging, and inside the bar-rail was a platform of hewn timber. The second story walls were constructed ten feet height and two feet thick. On the roof was placed an iron balance or scales, an emblem of justice. Two large fireplaces downstairs and two upstairs heated the rooms. In 1833, the emblem of justice was removed when the building was re-roofed. A large bell was hung in it's place. In 1873, the building was remodeled. The fireplaces were closed, the building was re-plastered, and the old stone floor was replaced with wood. Pennington's building served as Indiana's First Capitol from 1816 until 1826, when the state's capitol was moved to Indianapolis, and is now open as a museum. Nell
Greetings: At this point the majority of PRA Members are aware that the Board of Directors has approved changing the publishing of the Pennington Pedigrees from a paper hard copy to a Compact Disc format. The Pennington Research Assoc. Board of Directors did not take this situation lightly. The decision to change to a CD format was only made after much discussion and debate. In order for the PRA to continue without raising annual dues certain changes were required. A copy of the report to the Board regarding changing the Pedigrees from a hard copy to the CD format is posted on the member's site at MyFamily in addition to the notice posted on the Pennington Research Association Web Page. PRA members are aware that $25 of the $27 Annual Dues are utilized for operational expenses. Past experience has shown that a 100 page paper copy of the Pedigrees cost approximately $20.00 per year to publish and mail the two editions to each member. The Pedigree Volume 38 - 2 (page 85) contains the PRA 2007 Operational/General Fund Budget. It should be noted that the listed "Total Expenses" does not reflect the budget cuts made by the Board and the total operational expenses should be $8,365.00 rather than the $11,365.00 shown in the document. Based on a projected membership of 250, the 2007 expenses are $1,835.00 more than income even after cuts were made by the Board. At present, there are approximately 200 members who have submitted their dues for 2007. If this situation remains, the available funding for the PRA's Operational Expenses will be reduced below that reflected in the 2007 Budget. It should be oblivious something had to be done in order for the PRA to remain as a viable organization and to continue publishing the Pennington Pedigrees. The change from publishing the Pedigrees from a hard copy to a compact disc will reduce costs and certainly place the PRA in a better position to balance its annual budget. A notice to submit articles for the 2007 Spring Edition of the Pennington Pedigrees was recently posted by Pedigree Editor Colleen Blizzard. Please keep in mind that the Pedigree will no longer be limited to 100 pages and that any family research you are willing to share would be most welcome. Additionally, photographs and documents submitted can now be reproduced with a greatly improved quality. The exact method for publication and mailing of the 2007 Spring Edition of the Pedigree has not been finalized. However, at this time the most efficient approach under consideration is to send every PRA Member a copy of the Pedigree on a CD. At that point each member would have the option to print a paper copy on a personal computer printer or to utilize the services of a local print shop to produce a hard copy. When the number of pages for the 2007 Spring Edition is known, we can receive a cost estimate to print a limited number of hard copies from the PRA's current printer. However, based on the results of the survey from the 2006 fall edition of the Pedigree, it is doubtful that the PRA could offer any cost savings beyond that of using a local printer on an individual basis. Thank You for your support of the Pennington Research Assoc. James W. Pennington, President

It is a great pleasure for me to announce the appointment of Mike Pennington (mpennington14@yahoo.com) as the new Group Leader for Group 18. Mike recently joined the PRA and is looking forward with helping Group 18 update their family history with new research. He is very familiar with Group 18 and would like to correct some of the errors he has found in the Groups records with sources he has found (census and baptism records). I know you all join me in welcoming Mike as the Group Leader for Group 18 and that he can count on you for any help he may need. I don't know what group he belongs to but thought I should pass it long. Wanda JOHN L. PENNINGTON John L. Pennington (1821 – July 11, 1900) was a newspaper publisher, an Alabama state senator, and the fifth Governor of Dakota Territory. Biography Pennington was born at the town of New Berne in Wake County, North Carolina. He started a career in journalism by working as an apprentice for the "Raleigh Star." In 1856, Pennington founded the "Columban" in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1857, he founded the "Daily Progress in New Berne, North Carolina. After leaving the newspaper business in 1866, Pennington became a member of the Republican party and joined the carpetbaggers in Alabama, where he served as a member of the Alabama legislature until 1873. On January 1, 1874, Pennington was appointed as Governor of Dakota Territory by President Ulysses S. Grant after a recommendation by George E. Spencer. During Pennington's time as Governor, the gold rush was starting in the Black Hills; and, railroad construction and immigration had both slowed. People in the Black Hills wanted control over their own political future; and, separatists wanted to form their own territory called Lincoln. In the spring of 1877, Judge Granville was assigned to the Black Hills judicial district; and as a result, the separatist movement ended. Because of his lack of popularity in the Black Hills and negative reports on his character in Yankton, Pennington was replaced by William Alanson Howard as Governor of Dakota Territory in April of 1878. Governor Howard appointed Pennington as collector of internal revenue for Dakota Territory. In 1885, Pennington returned to journalism and established the "Weekly Telegram" at Yankton. In September 1883, Pennington attended the constitutional convention in Sioux Falls, where he opposed dividing Dakota Territory into two states. In 1891, Pennington left Yankton, South Dakota to resume journalism in the South. He died in Anniston, Alabama.
