    3. forwarding PRA email list ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: TWilli346@aol.com <TWilli346@aol.com> Date: Jul 5, 2007 11:20 AM Subject: [PENNINGTON] Dr. Weems Pennington Obituary To: PENNINGTON-L@rootsweb.com Weems Pennington (LINCOLNTON, GA) Friday, June 29, 2007 LINCOLNTON, GA - Weems Rufus Pennington, Sr., 89, beloved Lincoln County physician, died Wednesday, June 27, at Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington, GA, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Lincolnton United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dave Hinson officiating. Interment will follow in the Lincolnton City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Weems R. Pennington, Jr.; Don Pennington; Daniel McMillian; Dr. Weems R. Pennington III; Carey Pennington; and Bob Parks. Honorary pallbearers will be Murray Norman, Albert "Buddy" Radford, Thomas "Sting" Dawkins, Charles Estes, John Hawkins, Ben Ross, and Thomas Bunch. Dr. Pennington was born October 31, 1917, in Matthews, Jefferson County, Georgia, the son of Corinne Matthews Pennington and Luther Thomas Pennington. A graduate of the University of Georgia and life-long Bulldog fan, the young Weems "Pee Wee" Pennington was a member of the UGA track team running alongside the legendary Spec Towns, 1936 Olympic Gold Medal Winner. Pennington received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, then served his internship at Macon General Hospital where he met the love of his life, a nurse named Margaret Grace Cannon. The two were married in the summer of 1942 in Spartanburg, SC. Nicknamed "Doc Penny" by his comrades, Dr. Pennington served his country during World War II as a flight surgeon in the Army Air Corps, stationed in Hawaii. He and Margaret would later name their first daughter "Penny" in memory of his fellow soldiers. In the summer of 1946 Dr. and Mrs. Weems Pennington arrived in Lincolnton "looking to purchase a car," family members said, and ended up practicing family medicine there together, for 42 years. In addition to his medical practice Dr. Pennington was an active member of a number of civic organizations and served on several community service and medical boards. "Doc was probably the best diagnostician in the entire southeast," a co-worker said. "If Dr. Pennington said you had it, then you could bet on it, that's exactly what you had. His attention to detail and his insatiable thirst for knowledge placed him head and shoulders above any other physician anywhere in Georgia." "He was one of those doctors who just never stopped doctoring," added a friend. "He made house calls at all hours of the day and night and like many small town doctors back then, was sometimes paid with fresh garden vegetables or, when times were tough, maybe not at all." In 1946 the population of Lincolnton was about 5,000. In 1988 when Dr. Pennington retired the number of Lincoln County citizens had exceeded 8,000 and the good doctor had delivered well over 3,000 of them. "That's a lot of babies!" said Walter Baran, author of an impressive article about Dr. Pennington that appeared in the May 27, 1986 edition of Star magazine. Lincoln County expressed its appreciation to Dr. and Mrs. Pennington by designating Saturday, May 10, 1986, as "Weems Pennington Day." A parade in his honor featured over 400 of "Doc's Babies" who came home from California, Florida, and as far away as Canada, to honor the special man who brought them all into the world. Tuesday, Dr. Pennington's daughter had this to say about her father: "Daddy loved anything he could analyze and learn more about; he loved ham radios; fishing; flying; and he dearly loved his family." Survivors include his faithful wife and helpmate of 65 years, Margaret C. Pennington, Lincolnton; a son, Weems R. Pennington, Jr., M.D . and his wife Carol; a daughter, Peggy P. McMillian and her husband Daniel, all of Augusta; grandchildren Don Pennington and wife Cherlyn; Weems Pennington, III, and wife Adair; Carey Pennington and wife Laura, and Jeff, Allison, and Mark McMillian. Great-grandchildren Weems Pennington, IV; Cardy Pennington, Maggie Pennington, and Perrin Pennington. Dr. Pennington was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Pennington. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45245-0301, Attn: Gift Processing. Arrangements are in the care of Rees Funeral Home, 195 Peachtree St., Lincolnton, GA, (706) 359-3222. 1. Re: [PRA] PRA BLOG
    2. Dear Mary Leigh, One can be part of a PRA group by being able to identify your line as descended from the Progenitor, or oldest ancestor, that has a group in PRA. If you can get back far enough but do not connect with an already established PRA group, then you can request of PRA that a new group be established. There is a process for this that I do not know. I am not a member for several years now. I'd like to point out tho, that one does not have to be connected to an established PRA group to do genealogy work on your lines, or to contact, communicate, and share with other Pennington researchers, some members of PRA and some not members. The PRA list is one good tool and the Blog should prove to be another helpful tool. There is another list for Pennington researchers and that is Pennington-L@rootsweb.com You join this list the same way you join PRA's list. Many folks are on one list and many on the other while a third bunch of folks, like me, are on both lists. This is because there is valuable information shared and theories discussed on both lists. One last tool I'll mention, is Ancestry.com. It is expensive tho I have all that they currently offer and I feel it has been worth it. When I get time, I'll dig around some on your Pennington's. Good luck in your research! Barb T

    3. Comment: Every time I go to the blog the gray box with red X comes up and says my computer has performed an illegal function and closes me down. Question: How does one know what research group she is in and how does she get with that group? My ancestor of interest (for a friend's husband's family) is John and Hannah Pennington of Harford Co., MD 1800s through their son Franklin who married Eliza Arthur. Am trying to find Hannah's surname and parents of both John & Hannah. Mary Leigh Thank you. 3. Vickie: You can order back issues of the Pennington Pedigrees on the PRA's publication web page at --> https://www.penningtonresearch.org/Store/publications.htm . You want item #P3 (single issues which sell for $10.00). There are several public libraries that carry complete sets as well so you may want to check with your library. If you live close to Richmond, Indiana, you can visit the PRA's Archive/Library at Earlham College that carries a complete set of the Pennington Pedigrees. I hope this helps. 1. [PRA] Updated description of Pennington DNA study
    2. Nicholas Penington
    3. I have been allowed more words to describe the Pennington Family DNA Study and I have re-written the description which I have pasted below. I included some history of the name which helps to spark the interest I think! If anyone would like some more information about joining, feel free to contact me off list. Nick It appears that there are several different families that adopted the surname Pennington (or spelling variant) at different times. There is even an aristocratic line of Penningtons who held the title Baron Muncaster and lived in the same castle in Cumberland, England for 800 years. The last mentioned family's male line DNA signature remains elusive, but all of those families that have held the surname for centuries probably are ultimately linked to one of two villages in Lancashire. One is to be found near where the Muncaster family started to use the surname in about 1190 AD, and the other is Pennington near Leigh, Lancs (which is near Manchester) and this was named after a Richard de Pe(i)nnington living about 1220. Those who adopted the name later in the 14th C probably did so since it identified where they were from e.g. 'John of Pennington'. Our study appears to be sorting Penningtons/Pinningtons into one of a handful of "genetic families". We have at least 34 extensive family trees waiting to link up with the DNA evidence, and a DNA match can often identify which family a Pennington descends from. We are very interested in recruiting all Penningtons but what is most helpful to our effort is English or British Commonwealth Penningtons with a good knowledge of their ancestry, since those Penningtons that immigrated to the US may be only a subset of the Pennington families that remained in the UK.

I would also like to see all of you fill in the information for your immediate family and send direct to myself and or Joyce so that she can complete the information. Photos & stories are also appreciated. Example Tommy Gilliam has a lot of information and can handle his branch of that tree as does Alonzo and Rocky Pennington etc. If each of you provides what you have we can really start putting these puzzle pieces together. Names, date of births, deaths burial location, birth location or any information you may have. I have discovered a number of cousins that I did not know exist and would like to thank all of you for your input and help. I have only been involved heavily for a couple of weeks but Joyce and Julie Martin have been working on this for years. They are awesome and have done an excellent job and I really appreciate their efforts and dedication. It looks like we have discovered that Alonzo Charles Pennington had at least two brothers Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Sidney Pennington and a sister Melissa Pennington. We have discovered a possible mother and father to them as well. Joyce McAnally is a descendent of Thomas Sidney and Julie Martin is a decendent of Benjamin Franklin. The rest of us are decendents of Alonzo Charles. Any and all information that any of you may have going back up that chain would be appreciated. I have discovered that my grandmother Florence Wilkins Pennington's family came across the Mayflower and we are certainly hoping to continue to research and find out all we can. Any suggestions or thoughts please let us know. I will also be sending you all a copy of the photo of Alonzo's immediate family including our grandpa's? Yes, I will be happy to forward this to the LIST. Hi Nell, I was wondering if you could pass this on to the Pennington Research Assc. Group to see if anyone may have a link here? Harrell, I thought I would cc this to you as well to see if it helps? Thank You Mike Pennington I am sending this to you and asking you to check on the name of Lela or Lilly Brannon maiden name of Pennington who was our grandfathers sister who lived in Watongo, Oklahoma: She also had a daughter named Lee Ann in Spencer Oklahoma. Just wondered if anyone may have any information on Alonzo's family tree? Mike Pennington Hi Julie and the rest of the Pennington Clan. I have attached a photo and a newspaper clipping but depending on your photo program it may not be large enough to read. I will try to write out what it says so you can read it here. The basic information that I have is that our grandfather was Alonzo Charles Pennington born in 1855 or 1859 possibly in Jackson County Mississippi and died in 1936 in Ringling, Oklahoma. He was either buried at Crow cemetery or Graham, Oklahoma? There is some question as to him being married to a Ella Shaw who may be buried in Muskogee, Oklahoma or a lady by the name of Susan Fowler/Gross and or now the name of Caroline? Who knows he may have been married to more than one woman over the years. I think Ella Shaw was from Arkansas but not sure? Alonzo also went by the initials of A.C. Pennington and was a minister in Marshall County, (Madill) Oklahoma and is listed in book 1 page 1 with the credentials in the Johnston (Madill) County Records. He was a minister for 46 years. Rumor was that he was also possibly a Deputy Sheriff but not verified. Alonzo's father and two brothers served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. They moved to Canton Texas after the war and then in 1905 to the Woodville Indian Territory-Oklahoma. This would be Marshall County (Madill, Oklahoma) He married Susan F. Fowler in 1879. The article said he was 80 years old and lived with one of his sons J.B. Pennington the past 15 years who taught school in Carter county? Other members of the family who was with him when he died was W.C. (William Carlton Pennington) & W.H.(Walter Henry Pennington my grandfather), one sister at this time but could have been more? Her name was Lelia Brannon of Watonga, Oklahoma who I believe is Alonzo's daughter. He and Susan Fowler had 4 sons and one daughter. His wife, one son, brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Children: 1. J.B. Pennington 12-8-1888 2. Sid or Ed Pennington I believe his name was Sid or Sidney which my dads name was Sidney Franklin Pennington his nickname may have been Ed. 3. Lilly or Lela (could be Lelia Brannon) who may have had a daughter by the name of Lea Ann in Spencer, Oklahoma. 4. Willie Pennington (William Carlton) 5. Walter Henry Pennington 2-19-1891 to 3-14-1968 (our grandfather) who married Florence Helen Wilkins 1-2-1899 (our grandmother) who died in 11-5-55. She was born in Madill (Johnson County). Note Madill was where Alonzo was a minister and I think not far from Van Sant, Texas? Other information on our side of the family from Walter down I have some but will not go into it at this time for us to figure out the other end of this tree. A lot of the information was taken from the news clipping and again was probably what information the family had at the time. How many times he was married and or other information is sketchy to say the least. Julie, you may be interested in this for sure: Mr. Gill says he thinks he located info on my great grandfather Alonzo Pennington in Texas and Oklahoma. He said he found him first as a minister performing marriages in 1903 in Henderson County Texas and later in Marshall County, Oklahoma in 1914? He was recorded as A.C. Pennington at the time. In the 1880 census of Texas he found him and two brothers living in Van Sandt County Texas. "he went by Lonzo in this census and was newly married but not to Susan Fowler." The census said his wife's name was "Caroline". Mr. Gill also said that the census showed that he and his two brothers were born in Mississippi and that his parents were born in Alabama? He said he also found some marriage license in Van Sandt County showing Alonzo Pennington married to E. C. Samples on April 29, 1877. He found that A.C. Pennington married S.F. Fowler on May 17, 1884. "Alonzo was married before he married to Sarah. E. Caroline Samples Pennington may have died in childbirth." "Quote Mr. Gill said the information obtained at the time of death and in the obituary, though helpful, undoubtedly did not know all the facts?" 3. This will need to be carefully looked at as my group 11 Penningtons were also in Madill Marshall Co Oklahoma. A. C. might look like A. L. in census. I'll very carefully compare your notes to my data. Gill said the information obtained at the time of death and in the obituary, though helpful, undoubtedly did not know all the facts?" 3. http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/ I've ordered several records from St. Louis (that is where WW II's are held). Many of the WW II records have been destroyed by fire but the medical records still exist. You have to be specific. I believe this link is for any US soldier and its free if you list yourself as next of kin. 3. Does anyone know how to obtain military records from the Navy for someone who was not in a War or major Conflict? Are they available to the public? The Ancestry records while are good do not seem to cover just anyone during time periods between the wars. I have searched and not found my Grandfather's records among them and I am wondering if it is because he wasn't in a major War or Conflict? My Grandfather, James Conway Pennington, was a baker in the Navy. I understand from his daughter that he also won metals for his swimming skills and taught others to swim also. His wife, my Grandmother, Elsie Marie Pennington told me that she had a friend who set her up on a blind date with Conway after he got out of the Navy. They were married in Checotah, OK in 1922 and I don't believe they had a long courtship. He was born in 1901 so he probably was in the Navy from ~1917-~1922? He lived in Oklahoma, I am not sure if they lived in Ada where they lived at the time they moved to Oklahoma in 1915. I am assuming he lived in Ada, OK when he joined the Navy. Does anyone have any advice for me how to get his Miliary records. His daughter was told when he died at the young age of 52, in 1953 that he could not be buried as a Veteran because he was not in a War. I thought that sounded strange but I do not know all of the rules about such things. If you know anything that can help me please, please help! : ) Thanks! Vicki Pennington Bishop David and Vicki

    3. Hi all...I'm always glad to help with Texas research and Penningtons especially. PENNINGTON SIDNEY 17 M W LA LA MOREHOUSE BASTROP P O 1870 Series: M593 Roll: 517 Page: 215 I also checked and the Sidney Pennington living in Van Zandt County, TX in 1880 was born in Mississippi. In 1860, a PT Pennington is in the same location (different PO). Series: M653 Roll: 413 Page: 404 PENNINGTON P T 44 M W IL LA MOREHOUSE TIPTON P O 1860 He has a very large family. His wife is Sarah A... Sidney should be 10 at the time. There is an S. O. age 6 born LA(a bit young but in range of possibility). Could he possibly be related to the famous Sidney O. Pennington of early Texas history? I can send more later but won't be able to research tomorrow. Phillip T Pennington appears in the 1850 Morehouse LA census but Sidney isn't there (probably not born yet...if this is the correct family). See: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/morehouse/census/1850/pg385b.txt ~~~~~~~~ I'll input an aside on Sidney O. Pennington from a historical marker: Historical Markers and Sites Shelby County, Texas "Sidney O. Pennington (Shelbyville Cemetery) Born in 1809 in Kentucky, Pennington came to TX in 1834 & participated in the capture of San Antonio in 1835. In 1836, he fought at San Jacinto & signed the TX Declaration of Independence. Pennington died in Shelby County in 1838." ~~~~~~~~~~ Hope this helps. I do appreciate the information and yes any help in the Van Sandt area would be great. We know that Thomas Sidney and his family are there and buried there but not sure about Benjamin Franklin and or Alonzo's family. If we knew who their parents were we would be one step closer. Soooooo tell your friend I will buy coffee and appreciate any help we can get. Also have you ever heard the name of Millie Pennington or the name William Monroe Beckham? This is a note I got from Pricilla Bottom regarding her great grandmother but I am not sure of the connection if any? Hello, I saw your e-mail in Butch Bridges' This 'n' That. My great grandmother was Millie Pennington. She was married to my great grandfather, William Monroe Beckham. She gave birth to my grandfather, Finley Stewart Beckham, on April 6, 1881, and she died when he was about 4 years of age (1885?). My grandfather always said she died of "yellow jaundice" so I suspect she had a liver ailment, but I don't know for sure. My grandfather was born around Valley View, TX, and died in Ardmore, OK, May 4, 1974. I have always been curious about my great grandparents--the Pennington's--but have no information on them since my grandfather was so young when his mother died. If any of this information fits into your family history, would you please share it with me? Thank you. Priscilla Bottom _priscilla.bottom@sbcglobalnet_ (mailto:priscilla.bottom@sbcglobal.net) Just out of curiosity where is Valley View Texas in relation to Van Sandt and Canton? I am also (probably) of the Wells Pennington line thru Arad Pennington, and if I can help, let me know. Texas, tho, is not my strong suit. Barb T
