    1. [PRA] 2007 Pedigrees Fall Issue - call for articles
    2. Colleen Blizard
    3. Hello all, It is time to prepare for the fall issue of the Pedigrees. The PRA Board of Directors approved new standards for the Pedigrees earlier this week. Part of the standards was a change to the due date for articles. The due date for articles for the fall is now August 15th. Because the 15th is just a few days away, the deadline for the fall issue will be August 31, 2007. If you have something you would like to submit for the fall 2007 issue and cannot meet the August 31st deadline, please contact me. Please submit your articles as soon as possible. Also, please submit any photos that you would like published. I'd love to see more photo albums like Group 6 did in our 2007 Pedigrees Spring issue. Gene has posted the Pedigrees standards on the website. You can view it at: http://www.penningtonresearch.org/resources/Pedigrees-Standards-Guidelines.p df. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. 1. [PRA] 12 Tips for Better E-mail Etiquette
    2. Gene Pennington
    3. I just completed reading a very interesting document from Microsoft titled "12 Tips for Better E-mail Etiquette" and thought you might find it of value when using this mail list or communicating with others. While the tips are intended for the business community, much of what she offers as tips are of value to all of us in today's complex world of instant communications. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Chairman Research Director Pennington Research Association, Inc. www.PenningtonResearch.org PRA Blog - http://praresearch.blogspot.com ========================================================================= By Laura Stack, MBA, CSP, The Productivity ProR I remember opening my first e-mail account and thinking how much fun it was to send a message to a friend. However, most people now no longer find e-mail simple or fun. E-mail messaging now exceeds telephone traffic and is the dominant form of business communication. Some workers tell me that handling e-mail consumes half of their day. A recent Wall Street Journal report indicates that soon employees will spend three to four hours a day on e-mail. Don't you wish that every person who received a new e-mail account had to agree to follow certain rules to use it? There are certain professional standards expected for e-mail use. Here are some things to keep in mind regarding professional e-mail conduct: 1. Be informal, not sloppy. Your colleagues may use commonly accepted abbreviations in e-mail, but when communicating with external customers, everyone should follow standard writing protocol. Your e-mail message reflects you and your company, so traditional spelling, grammar, and punctuation rules apply. 2. Keep messages brief and to the point. Just because your writing is grammatically correct does not mean that it has to be long. Nothing is more frustrating than wading through an e-mail message that is twice as long as necessary. Concentrate on one subject per message whenever possible. 3. Use sentence case. USING ALL CAPITAL LETTERS LOOKS AS IF YOU'RE SHOUTING. Using all lowercase letters looks lazy. For emphasis, use asterisks or bold formatting to emphasize important words. Do not, however, use a lot of colors or graphics embedded in your message, because not everyone uses an e-mail program that can display them. 4. Use the blind copy and courtesy copy appropriately. Don't use BCC to keep others from seeing who you copied; it shows confidence when you directly CC anyone receiving a copy. Do use BCC, however, when sending to a large distribution list, so recipients won't have to see a huge list of names. Be cautious with your use of CC; overuse simply clutters inboxes. Copy only people who are directly involved. 5. Don't use e-mail as an excuse to avoid personal contact. Don't forget the value of face-to-face or even voice-to-voice communication. E-mail communication isn't appropriate when sending confusing or emotional messages. Think of the times you've heard someone in the office indignantly say, "Well, I sent you e-mail." If you have a problem with someone, speak with that person directly. Don't use e-mail to avoid an uncomfortable situation or to cover up a mistake. 6. Remember that e-mail isn't private. I've seen people fired for using e-mail inappropriately. E-mail is considered company property and can be retrieved, examined, and used in a court of law. Unless you are using an encryption device (hardware or software), you should assume that e-mail over the Internet is not secure. Never put in an e-mail message anything that you wouldn't put on a postcard. Remember that e-mail can be forwarded, so unintended audiences may see what you've written. You might also inadvertently send something to the wrong party, so always keep the content professional to avoid embarrassment. 7. Be sparing with group e-mail. Send group e-mail only when it's useful to every recipient. Use the "reply all" button only when compiling results requiring collective input and only if you have something to add. Recipients get quite annoyed to open an e-mail that says only "Me too!" 8. Use the subject field to indicate content and purpose. Don't just say, "Hi!" or "From Laura." Agree on acronyms to use that quickly identify actions. For example, your team could use <AR> to mean "Action Required" or <MSR> for the Monthly Status Report. It's also a good practice to include the word "Long" in the subject field, if necessary, so that the recipient knows that the message will take time to read. 9. Don't send chain letters, virus warnings, or junk mail. Always check a reputable antivirus Web site or your IT department before sending out an alarm. If a constant stream of jokes from a friend annoys you, be honest and ask to be removed from the list. Direct personal e-mail to your home e-mail account. 10. Remember that your tone can't be heard in e-mail. Have you ever attempted sarcasm in an e-mail, and the recipient took it the wrong way? E-mail communication can't convey the nuances of verbal communication. In an attempt to infer tone of voice, some people use emoticons, but use them sparingly so that you don't appear unprofessional. Also, don't assume that using a smiley will diffuse a difficult message. 11. Use a signature that includes contact information. To ensure that people know who you are, include a signature that has your contact information, including your mailing address, Web site, and phone numbers. 12. Summarize long discussions. Scrolling through pages of replies to understand a discussion is annoying. Instead of continuing to forward a message string, take a minute to summarize it for your reader. You could even highlight or quote the relevant passage, then include your response. Some words of caution: - If you are forwarding or reposting a message you've received, do not change the wording. - If you want to repost to a group a message that you received individually, ask the author for permission first. - Give proper attribution. Use these suggestions as a starting point to create e-mail etiquette rules that will help your team stay efficient and professional.

It will open up even more records to us via the Internet. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Chairman Research Director Pennington Research Association, Inc. www.PenningtonResearch.org PRA Blog - http://praresearch.blogspot.com =================================================================== Big news! Footnote.com will soon begin digitizing content from Allen County Public Library. This comes on the heels of the company's signed agreement with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) a few months ago to digitize millions of historical documents housed at NARA. Here is the latest announcement: Lindon, Utah - August 2, 2007 -Today, Footnote.com announced a new partnership with Allen County Public Library (ACPL), the largest public genealogy library in the United States to digitize millions of historical records making them available online for the first time at Footnote.com. The ACPL collections feature unique American and International records including family histories, city directories, military records and historical newspapers. "We're excited to partner with the Allen County Public Library and are fortunate to be working with some of the finest archives in the United States" said Roger Bell, president of Footnote.com "The content from ACPL is a valuable addition to the millions of records we currently have on our site." As part of the partnership, all ACPL records digitized by Footnote.com will be made available at the library for free. For those that cannot travel to the library, these records can be accessed from a personal computer with a Footnote.com membership. In addition to the ACPL, Footnote.com has agreements with The National Archives and Records Administration, the Pennsylvania Archives, FamilySearch, the Center for Research Libraries, and local archives in Goffstown, NH, South Boston, VA, Harris County, TX and others. Footnote.com doesn't just make history come alive, it keeps history alive. Footnote.com has created a site where people with similar interests come together to share their discoveries and insights. Visitors are encouraged to annotate documents, tell their own stories and upload content from their own shoeboxes - all for free. =============================================================

    1. [PRA] John H. Pennington of Central and South America
    2. Rick Crume
    3. My great-great-grandfather's brother John H. Pennington was born in 1848 in Maine, probably in Houlton, Aroostook County. He was living in Rochester, Monroe County, New York in 1896. His son Frank Frederick "Fred" Pennington, born in about 1872, moved to Guatemala. I have found a John H. Pennington in Central and South America and wonder if he's Fred's father. In about 1888, the government of Colombia granted a contract to a British company owned by "an Englishman John H. Pennington" to build a railroad between Bogota and Girardot, Colombia. (Source: Hernan Horna, Transport Modernization and Entrepreneurship in Nineteenth Century Colombia: Cisneros & Friends (Stockholm: Almqvist & Wiksell International, 1992), page 138.) Ellis Island passenger lists show a John H. Pennington arrived in New York City from Venezuela in 1893. Passenger lists on Ancestry.com show that a John H. Pennington/J. H. Pennington landed in New Orleans, Louisiana, between 1896 and 1905 on ships arriving from Belize, Costa Rica and Cuba. Based on his age on the lists, this John H. Pennington was born between 1851 and 1858. A passenger list dated 9 June 1905 says J. H. Pennington, age 50, manager of the Cuba Tropical Fruit Company, had left from Havana, Cuba, and his final destination was New Orleans. Maine is listed as his "country of last permanent residence." A list of passengers arriving in New Orleans from Panama in 1912 lists a J. H. Pennington, born in about 1874 in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Is this the same person who was born between 1851 and 1858 according to earlier lists? Was the John H. Pennington who contracted to build a railroad in Colombia and frequently traveled between Central America and New Orleans the same John H. Pennington who was born in 1848 in Maine? Thanks for any help. Rick Crume Glyndon, Minnesota Pennington Research Association Group #17

As the ARD responsible for the BPIP, Guye worked very hard to complete the project and he helped to create perhaps the single most important research work the PRA has ever produced, the Pennington Periodicals CD. As a Board Member, his advice and opinions were most helpful and insightful. He helped keep the Board focused on our financial responsibilities and our primary mission. Words alone cannot express my personal appreciation and how much I've enjoyed working with Guye. I know the PRA Membership, and especially the Board, wish Guye and his family well and hope for nothing but the best for them. 1. Re: [PRA] Searching for William PENNINGTON
    2. S A Erickson
    3. A little tidbit for an old email. I have the father of Mary Jane Brown as Reuben Brown b abt 1795 in NC. His wife was Elizabeth and they came to Texas in 1839. He paid taxes in 1840, and appears in the 1850 and 1860 census for the same county. I've not looked past that as this isn't my line. However, I did have Penningtons in the area. Mary Jane's brother, William W. married Nancy C Pennington June 6 1853. Sister, Anna M. married Noah Pennington. I have Noah Pennington as son of Theophilus who had a daughter Hannah who married I F Brown and so it goes.
