    2. Carmen, When I go to the Myfamily.com, how do I connect to the Penningtons? I belong to the My family.com with two other family groups and I don't see how I can separate from their page and connect to your site. Thanks. Ruth Klein

    1. JFMF & My Family Site
    2. Carmen M. Johnson
    3. Hello Everyone, Those of you who have contacted me and have been signed up for the My Family site - I hope you are enjoying yourself! Those of you who haven't contacted me - what are you waiting for??? I thought I would answer a few questions in general for everyone so you might understand better what is going on. Barbara Pennington and Gene Pennington sent me a spreadsheet of everyone who has paid their dues. I filtered out those who had email addresses and sent each of those who were up to date a message inviting them to the website and asking them to agree to some Terms and Conditions before they were allowed to join up. So that is how I started. I have gone in and added each person who has replied and gave them Guest Rights so they are allowed to browse to their heart's content but can't change the data. I am keeping track of those who have contacted me on the same spread sheet! Back to the My Family site - some of you want to know where the JFMF database is. If you go down the page, you will find something that says family trees. Click on All Family Tree's and you will see all of the gedcoms that have been uploaded. To look at one of the gedcoms you would click on the link and it would open up with a window on top of your browser. This is a browser window - if you have a Pop - Up blocker and it is coming up, try holding your Ctrl key when you click on the link. Most of the gedcoms will show up on your screen as a pedigree. This isn't really the easiest method to see all of the good stuff. Play around a bit and look at the toolbar items and menu items. You will probably see something that will show you the gedcom in Family View, Pedigree, or Family Story. I prefer Family Story myself - it is much easier to see a bigger picture. Go and check out your line - is everything correct, up to date, etc. Do you have data that you can provide? Please make sure you send it to your Family Group Leader. You might want to share it on the PRA newslist as well. Remember that this newslist is a wonderful resource. Everything that gets posted to the newslist is part of the archives. As a member, you can search the archives and sometimes find some wonderful information. Please keep looking and exploring. If you find some interesting info, or you want to share a point of view or idea - post it to the newslist. The DNA project is a wonderful resource and we hope that it will give us a lot of information, but it can't take the place of good old fashion research. It has been pointed out that the DNA test does us females little good unless we can rope some poor unsuspecting male relative in getting tested. We need to still do the research and share our ideas. 1. Re: JFMF Updates--Sorry
    2. Carmen I'm doubly sorry. One for the email you received before I could write you. the other to say I can't find a previous email from you. I hadn't looked in the spam folder the past few days and I would think that was where it went. I always find some mail in there that isn't spam, but for some reason they will land in there. Most definately I want to be a member. I have belonged to a few other list on MyFamily and have agreed to the terms they have. Please send or do whatever needs doing. Thanks and again, I'm sorry to have to bother you so. Lois Tonoff Gr 26 We now have 36 members on the MyFamily site who now have access to the JFMF. There are still 139 of you out there who haven't joined yet. I've been working in the evenings getting everyone who wishes to join signed up as quickly as possible. 3. Carman, I am confused. I joined PRA last fall and understand my dues covered until the end of the year. I haven't paid dues yet this year. I didn't know how much, where to send it, etc. What is the JFMF? If I pay my dues will I be informed? I am in Group 8. Does that make a difference? Enlighten me, please. 3. Found proof that Lucretia who married John Stuart/Steward/Stewart of Sussex Co, VA, was indeed a Pennington. She was the daughter of John Pennington whose will of 1773 in Sussex Co, VA, named two married daughters and Lucretia Pennington. In settlement of John Pennington's estate in 1793, Lucretia is named as Lucretia Stewart. Gary Williams, Clerk of Circuit Court of Sussex Co, VA, provided papers to prove this mystery. Peggy A. 3. Hi Barb, I had many email attachments also. And I recognized some of the address but I still didn't open any of those files. Sometimes you have to ask yourself, "I know this person BUT am I expecting any files from them? " You can save the file to a floppy and virus scan it with your program. Most of the time I delete it. Your husband sounds like a prince for taking that so well. Just sharing a thought - thanks for posting. I am still receiving error messages from America On Line (AOL) telling me (List Administrator) that all of the messages being sent from our mail list (PRA-L & PRA-D) to subscribers using AOL as their ISP are being rejected. I just checked with the Rootsweb "Help Desk" and they have posted this update message: "Mail Lists: 2004-01-28 AOL is still blocking RootsWeb mail. We have contacted AOL and are working with them to resolve the problem. In the meantime, AOL users can read list mail through the archives at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/" Hopefully this problem will correct itself soon and our subscribers who use AOL as their ISP will receive all the messages sent out the past couple of days. 2. Dear Gene and listmembers, I received a message last nite that had Gene's address and an attachment. Thinking it was actually from Gene and might be important, I opened the attachment and my Norton's shot up and said I was infected with a worm. This was a particularly difficult worm to get rid of and I couldn't, so my husband worked on it for at least an hour this afternoon and finally found the way to get rid of it and determine that my system is clean now. He scanned several times and it came up clean. I had instructed Norton's to stop the worm from sending itself out via messages purportedly sent from me. Still, in that short time, apparently it sent itself to a lot of people I didn't send messages to. When I checked my email tonite, I had 120 messages and at least 25 of these were telling me that the messages had been stopped due to being infected by a virus. Everyone, PLEASE RUN SCANS and make sure your virus list is current. I can't say for sure if anyone else got an infected message before I was able to instruct Norton's to prevent the worm from resending itself. I don't keep an address list so I'm not sure where it got the addresses. It may have been through some of my saved messages. Some of the blocked messages had these address beginnings: kathpenn [email protected] [email protected] costas [email protected] [email protected] persiank mclnva23.covad I think the lists have filters, but just want to make sure no one else gets this malicious worm if I can. I am still receiving error messages from America On Line (AOL) telling me (List Administrator) that all of the messages being sent from our mail list (PRA-L & PRA-D) to subscribers using AOL as their ISP are being rejected. [Refer to the Error message from Rootsweb Admin Software below for details]. I checked with the Rootsweb "Help Desk" and learned they have underdone significant modifications to their domain name lookup and IP addresses and this could cause a problem with some ISPs. [Refer to the Rootweb Help Desk message below for details]. Hopefully this problem will correct itself soon and our subscribers who use AOL as their ISP will receive all the messages sent out the past couple of days. I will post this message again after the problem is resolved. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Vice President Research Director Pennington Research Association, Inc. www.PenningtonResearch.org ============================================= Error message from Rootsweb Admin Software: <<< 554-(RLY:B1) The information presently available to AOL indicates this <<< 554-server is generating high volumes of member complaints from AOL's <<< 554-member base. Date: 2004-01-27 Today, RootsWeb has undergone significant modifications to its domain name lookup and IP addresses, and from our perspective this looks to have happened without incident. However, there may be consequences external to RootsWeb's network. IP addresses are the underlying methodology that computers use to identify and talk to each other on the internet. While most ISPs will only store (cache) RootsWeb's IP addresses for short periods, some ISPs may retain our old details for an extended period. If you are having difficulties reaching RootsWeb sites (however, you probably won't see this page), the first recommendation is to wait an hour or two and then try again. If the period has extended to about a day, you may wish to ask your ISP to flush their DNS cache and see if that helps. If your ISP needs to contact us, they are welcome to contact us via the HelpDesk web form. With regard to e-mail, it is also possible that e-mail to and from RootsWeb may be delayed until the changes have spread (propagated) through the internet. Also, where RootsWeb has had some of our mailing list servers placed on a whitelist with ISPs, these arrangements may need to be renewed, with the consequence being that we may not be able to deliver e-mail to all ISPs at this time. Definition: IP Address - Every computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. End
