    1. Big Breakthrough on the DNA of Scottish Clans
    2. Nicholas Penington
    3. At the risk of boring you all with too much DNA information I thought I would post just this one page article on a major breakthrough determined by DNA. If you are a Scot you can now find out if you are a descendant of the Viking Somerled or the Gaelic line of the MacDonalds and their related clans. Somerled had an R1a haplogroup (not R1b) like most Penningtons. It is a very different Y-Chromosome found in Scandinavia and when it is found in the UK especially in a Scottish person it is diagnostic of Viking heritage. 3. Rene'e and list, I am sorry who caught the intentional mistake? The link established by DNA for group 23 is to group 6 not group 9! Both of these groups have Isaacs in them early on. The Vikings raided Ireland then settled and founded many towns including Dublin. They were finally thrown out in 902 AD by the Irish whereupon they invaded the Wirral south of Liverpool. Other Norwegians re conquered Dublin in 917 and they then blended into the population. The Wirral connection is, I think, perhaps how I got my Viking DNA (seen in the DNA Study). Regarding Darby, this was my mother's mother's name. There is a famous aristocratic line of Irish Darbys (of Leap castle) but they were originally English (or Norman). There are many English lines of Darbys so I would say the name is not Irish. Perhaps that Isaac Pennington has something to do with the link between groups 9 and 23? Thought it might help clarify it for someone like it did me. Etta A land patent is a land transaction during the Colonial period from the Crown to an individual. A land grant is a land transaction from the Commonwealth to an individual. A deed is a land transaction between individuals or private parties. 3. Paul and Others, Just an idea! Last year my 5 g-grandfather William Braithwaite, a Revolutionary War Veteran was GIVEN a new gravestone by the Veteran's Adm. During the ceremony, the Son of the American Revolution (Leesburg Chapter in VA) and the State Honor Guard presented at the grave marking. The only real cost was LABOR from everyone pitching in to clean up the area. So, any of you that have veterans as ancestors might want to check into this. Thanks for posting, Paul. It took us about 9 months to get authorization from the Vet's Adm. but it was certainly worth the wait. 3. Cousin Ruth, Thanks for your response. I really had not thought that the Irish connection was through the Jones line. That may be the way is was. Thanks for the idea. I hope someone has the information and will respond. 2. Cousin Maxine, I would think that the Irish line came in through the Jones family connection. I don't have the Jones data yet, but that's a good guess. While documenting my other family lines I was amazed to find so many Scottish and Irish lines that I didn't know anything about. If someone has more information on the Pennington line's Irish connection, I would love to have it also. Thank you. Cousin Ruth
