Rosie, Ancestry Weekly Digest, 15 March 2003 DATE CALCULATOR While working with newspaper obituaries and other articles, there is often a need to translate something like ". . . funeral to be held on Thursday . . ." into a precise calendar date for the family history file. However, there is a great tool for this and other calendar functions at: < <http://www.timeanddate.com/date/> >. In this example, I simply added the year and month I was working with. Then, the exact date of my great-grandfather's funeral was available in an instant. Nancy Haberkorn Rachlin ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LOOKING FOR A MISSING RELATIVE? FOLLOW THE RAILROADS! I recently found a missing relative by using a bit of intuition. In 1890, a large group of relatives were living in Richland Co, North Dakota, but a few decades later, some of them were missing. I did all the usual things like looking in nearby counties, etc., but was unable to locate them. While doing some research for another hobby, I realized that the SOO (later the Great Northern) Railroad ran through Wahpeton in Richland Co. Thus, I expanded my search to the cities and towns along the rail line, and found them in Minneapolis. There are many rail fan websites that have the history of the railroads in the USA. A Google search with the name of the railroad will turn up a good list. Also, try the keyword "Fallen Flags." A fallen flag is a railroad that is no longer running today or has been absorbed by another road. Gordon & Juanita Reeder ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SCANNED WORKING COPIES FOR NOTES I've been doing my family research for a little over a year now, and I came up with something that works for me. When I receive documents or copies of documents, I duplicate it with my scanner, and use it as a working copy. I can make notes on it, or highlight information that I want to researcher further on. Arlene Nickell ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REPRINT POLICY We encourage the circulation of the "Ancestry Daily News" via non-profit newsletters and lists providing that you credit the author, include any copyright information (Copyright 1998-2003, MyFamily.com Inc. and its subsidiaries.), and cite the "Ancestry Daily News" (<http://www.ancestry.com/dailynews>) as the source, so that others can learn about our free newsletter as well.

I am new to this list and have Pennington ancestors in Lancashire UK and the States, plus two brick walls! 1. Stephen Pennington b.Myerscough, Lancashire. Aged 54yrs in the Preston 1861 census. m.to Mary Shepherd.Six children are listed. He was a Blacksmith, who died in Preston in 1874 aged 66yrs. I cannot find him or his parents in the OPR's. 2. Two of old Stephens great grandchildren went from Lancashire to St. Louis (?Missouri) with their Mother, after their Father,Thomas Pennington (b.1869 Preston) died in the early 1900's Prudence and Dick (?Richard) Pennington were b. between 1888 - 1891 in Lancashire UK. Their Mother was Emma (m.s.?Whitfield) Nothing more was heard from them. This came from oral family history years ago. If anybody has any data on these folk, I'd be delighted to hear from them. Jean.
Steven Pennington has kindly sent me two new pictures for the Group 7 website. They are photos of William Pennington and George W. Penningtons gravestones in Johnson Co., KY. Old Scam Now Targeting Genealogists By Ed Criscuolo For 20 years or more, long before the Internet as we know it, there was a scam going on by mail known as the "Nigerian Scam" (also known as a "4-1-9" or "Advance Fee Fraud" scheme). Nowadays, it is done via e- mail over the Internet. Typically, messages from Nigeria (or Sierra Leone, or the Ivory Coast, or almost any other foreign nation) are sent to addresses taken from large mailing lists. They go something like this: A wealthy foreigner needs your help moving millions of dollars from his homeland to yours and will reward you with a hefty percentage of this fortune if you agree to assist him. In another variation: A church or religious organization is contacted by a wealthy foreigner who says he desires nothing more than to leave his considerable fortune to that particular group. Now there is a new variation, specifically targeting genealogists. In it, the scammer claims to have the same surname as you, and wants you to pose as his uncle (or other family member) in order to assist in claiming/releasing/transferring a large sum of money left by his late family, which he will share . . . Clearly this has been designed to prey on our usual eagerness to help out anyone with the same surname. After all, they might really be family. Should you agree to participate in this international bail-out, something will go wrong. Paperwork will be delayed. Questions will be asked. Officials will need to be bribed. Money from you, an insignificant sum, really, in light of the windfall about to land in your lap, will be required to get things back on track. You pay, you wait for the transfer . . . and all you'll get in return are more excuses about why the funds are being held up and assurances that everything can be straightened out if you'll just send a bit more cash to help the process along. Once your bank account has been sucked dry or you start making threats, you'll never hear from these scammers again. As for the money you've thrown at this -- it's gone forever. Throughout the Conference, in the Demonstrations Area we will be presenting a variety of lectures and demonstrations, some historic and some genealogically related. It is very important for the Board of Directors to hear from PRA members and other researchers. Each year, at the Annual Reunion/Meeting, the PRA's Board of Directors meets to discuss and make decisions on matters pertaining to the operation of the Pennington Research Association. Here is your chance to let the Board hear you thoughts, ideas and suggestions about the Pennington Research Association and its' future. Barbara Pennington, President/CEO, will soon ask for suggestions from the Board for agenda items for the Board meeting in August. If you have any items which you would like the Board of Directors to discuss, please send them to any member of the Board with a request they be placed on the agenda for the Board meeting. To send a message to a Board Member, go to --> http://www.penningtonresearch.org/organization/contact.htm and select the person by clicking on their name. This will start your e-mail program so you can complete your message and send it on its' way. If you have a specific item you wish to address, it really helps if you include your suggestion on how you want to make it better, change it, etc. Please note the agenda for the Board of Directors meeting is made by Barbara Pennington. Each Board member simply suggests agenda items to her. Gene Pennington (Group 7) Chairman Research Director Pennington Research Association, Inc. www.PenningtonResearch.org
It's that time again! That's right - it's time to start planning for our annual Reunion/Meeting. This year we are meeting in Richmond, Indiana on August 5 - 7. For more information, go to --> http://www.penningtonresearch.org/Meetings/2004mtg.htm . Here are my top ten reasons why you should this year's Reunion/Meeting: 1. You can participate in the dedication of our new Research Library/Archive at Earlham College. 2. You can do your own research by looking through the family histories, photographs and other material that has been donated to our new Research Library/Archive. 3. You can make new friends and maybe find a new "cousin". 4. Hear outstanding presentations by Nick Penington, Ph.D., Chairman of our DNA Study, Dr. Thomas Hamm, President of Earlham College and Jasper Green Pennington, PRA Archivist. 5. You can share your knowledge/skills with other researchers. 6. You can meet Board of Directors and exchange ideas with them about the future of the PRA. 7. You can learn something new. 8. You can teach something to another researcher. 9. You can visit the Allen County Genealogical Research Library in nearby Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Genealogical Research Library has one of the largest genealogical collections with extensive resources for many of the mid-west states. 10. You can tour the Joseph Moore Museum, the Levi Coffin House and the Underground Railroad and go crazy at Centerville, Webb's Antique Mall which is Indiana's largest antique center. The PRA holds its' annual Reunion/Meeting in a different location each year to help reach more of our members. This year we are meeting in Richmond, Indiana, near Earlham College. If you've not attended a meeting in the past few years, why not make this the one you attend? I hope to see you there! I don't have the ancestry of Myrtle but I felt compelled to make an observation. I am often struck by the number of common names people are researching. I am a Wheeler daughter. My mother's family are Adams and Penix. My father's mother's people are Pennington and Hammons (from Arkansas). My mother's mother's people are Penix and Morris. Her father's family are Adams and Abernathy (from Tennessee). Way back up the Wheeler tree there was a Crim - Layton Wheeler, b. abt 1803 m. Elizabeth Crim on 29 Aug 1825 (just four years before his death) in Oldham Co., Kentucky. And (another) Pennington - Francis Lamb "F.L." Wheeler (Layton's brother), b. 1 Dec 1815 in Kentucky, m. Martha Raten "Patsey" Pennington on 14 Jul 1845. Martha was b. 29 Nov 1826 in Garrard Co., Kentucky. I suppose with fewer population back then it is common enough to run into the same names, but it is still something of a shock to find others looking for the same names.
