Hi Maxine and others, The following is Anderson related information -- if I'm off topic here please let me know and I will answer privately on any other questions concerning Anderson. Nancy Anderson's relationship to Elizabeth Anderson is the six million dollar question for Anderson researchers. Nancy Anderson, wife of Jesse Roberts, is thought to be the sister of Swimpfield Anderson of Hawkins County TN. She and Jesse named a son Swimpfield Roberts. Moses Anderson of Wayne County KY is thought to be the brother of Swimpfield Anderson of Hawkins County TN. He named a son Swimpfield Anderson. We know that Swimpfield Anderson of Hawkins County, TN is tied in with the Anderson's of Grayson County VA because he married Sarah Perkins Anderson after the death of Stephen Anderson and had dealings with Anderson's from that area. Sarah and Stephen Anderson were Jene's 3rd great grandparents. We also know from DNA results that a Anderson researcher by the name of Roger Wayne Anderson and my husband are related. According to the DNA results they are 1 Genetic Distance apart. According the FTDNA this is the explanation of 1 GD, " You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male and you mismatch by only one 'point' on only one marker. For most closely related or same surnamed individuals, the mismatch markers are either DYS 439 or DYS 385 A, 385 B and 389-1. Mismatch only in one and you are certain." The DYS # that Jene and Roger off is 385B. So we know that Roger and Jene are related we just have to prove by a paper trial how they're related. If Jesse Roberts is the son of Cornelius Roberts and Mary Benton we have another connection to the Anderson's which really is detailed to explain. I know this doesn't answer your question straight-forward but there is circumstantial evidence indicating possibly a relationship between Nancy Anderson and Elizabeth Anderson, wife of Samuel Pennington. We just don't know what the relationship was at this point. I hope that I haven't confused you in trying to explain this - it gets confusing to me sometimes when I'm trying to figure things out. If you want to check out the Anderson DNA Project here is the website address - http://www.geocities.com/herb194/ The DNA Group 6 is the one you would be interested in checking out. Rene'e, Do you know if there's an LDS research center here? If so, have you used them? Do they have a lot of material for perusal and/or copying? Also, where can I get old church records? Births, deaths, baptisms recorded by churches before the states began to keep records. I've found that most states that I need records from don't have them prior to the 1800's in this country. Can I find church records online and purchase per record without having to pay to join a genealogy group? Anybody from PRA know? Thanks a bunch! Dana
Hi, I'm catching up as usual! I may be on to something about Elkton. In one of my books on Hampshire County, WV it mentions in 1720-1730 of Elkton VA (Elkton Village) as one of the earliest settlements and of course that is all it states. So, again I'll get back with everyone. Hi Carmen, Thanks so much for sending the James Johnston information. I plan to go through the information today and will get back to you with my findings. I do know that I have a deed and census documentation for James. James and Margaret sold land to M. [Mauccoy] L. and Joanna Anderson 600 acres. Are you interested? Hi Barb, So glad to hear from you! Could you give me a run-down of the progress of Group 12 and the strategy you used to pull the Group 12 researchers and the information together? I have alot of research to do for Samuel and Elizabeth. I'm thinking that if I knew how you proceeded and your accomplishments with the group I could use what you've already done to set up a plan for the Group. If you able to locate documents for Samuel or Elizabeth it would be a big help and much appreciated. Darlene, I certainly hope that you take on the reins of Group 12. There is an interesting conundrum that with Samuel Pennington. The story is that he was a "bound boy" who probably came from England. The DNA research pretty much throws that story out. Something else that is interesting is that Samuel pretty well disappears before 1850. After the death of his wife in 1846, he remarries and goes to TN and starts another family. If we have some misplaced Pennington's in TN - we should definitely check them out. I've run into Group 12 Penningtons quite a bit and have a lot of info on them. Since Ashe Co., NC is one of the major areas for the Micajah group, I've spent a lot of time on the Pennington's who live there. Most of the information I know about Samuel is on the PRA website at http://www.penningtonresearch.org/family_groups/fg2000-12.htm. I am in the process of documenting Samuel's children and their families in the census records. Has anyone done research on Land records for Samuel or his children? I would like to know if he owned land and where. Elizabeth Anderson, Samuel's wife, was the daughter of William Anderson and Catherine Walling. Elizabeth was a sister to Stephen Anderson which makes her my husband's 3rd greataunt and Samuel Pennington his 3rd greatuncle. I knew that Elizabeth Anderson married a Samuel Pennington but didn't have much information to go on as to who he was and how he might be related, or not, to the Micajah Pennington family. I am also interested in being the Group Leader for Group 12 and have talked with Rene'e about the duties as Group Leader. Rene'e, I look forward to the info on Abraham and Mary. I can't find her last name anywhere. I actually caught History Detectives last night. The first story about the war bored me--too much like the films we had to watch in history class. Guess I need to be out of school longer than 6 years to appreciate them. But the part on the victorian mail order brides was interesting. I also like the research hints they give between stories. I'm planning to join the local archaeology society here in AZ this fall. Can't wait to go on digs and work in the lab. I love anything that's been dead for several thousand years! Anyway, let me know when you find that notepad with Abraham and Mary's info. I'm bogged down with work and life right now and hubby's car is in the shop--bleh--so limited time for genealogy! How did anyone get along in the old days with just one car? Later! Cousin Dana (grp 9 and somewhat tied to 4) In a message dated 7/5/2004 6:17:14 PM US Mountain Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hi Dana, Well, I don't have an excuse like a reunion to give you for the reply delay. Truth is- my office is torn apart - this time I'm not looking in my piles, I'm looking for a legal pad, the whole thing ! It has the source for the marriage of Abraham and Mary Elkton. I have spent a week looking for the silly thing but I haven't given up yet. I hate to tell the list this - because right now it is only SPECULATION, I am still working on sources. What I can tell you about Abraham(1st) and Mary is both were born about 1730 in MD. The children so far are: Abraham Jr., Isabella Having said that - I can put this Abraham in Frederick County which includes Orange Co. VA. Abraham was one of the first land deeds recorded where Abraham sold property (500 Acres) to Christopher Beeler. The land was just west of the Shenandoah River (which today would be in Hampshire Cty. WV). Anyway, Abraham obtained the land in 1734. (Source: History of Lower Shenandoah Valley; J.E. Norris Pg. 79. I can also put Capt. Isaac Penington in the same area located on Long Marsh in Oct. 1750. Could Abraham and Capt. Isaac be brothers? Only time will tell. Of interest::: I can also put the surnames connected to the Penington's (VARIOUS SPELLINGS) of LOFTIN, ANDERSON (many and also connnected to my family throughtout history)BEALE, BEESON, MC KEAVER, ORR, PRITCHARD, PUGH, RIDGEWAY, STRIBLING, VANMETER, VEASEY, WARD, WETZEL, in the early history of the valley. Now at the same time that Abraham has his land (1730s), another division of the Shenandoah Valley was divided by Gov. Spottswood, he divided, Spottsyvania Cty was divided and its northern half erected into the County of Orange. This is where I found the marriage of Abraham and Mary (listed on that notebook- that is probably under my nose - by now). In 1738 Frederick Cty. was formed which included what is now Shenandoah Cty., portions of Page, Warren, Clark, Berkley, Jefferson and Morgan and the counties exactly westward of this section (orig. Lord Fairfax Grant) I think because there are no Elkton's in the area of VA. So, is it possible that Mary meant Abraham in MD and he took off with her, they married in Orange, Frederick, VA in 1720? The Elkton name- the census takers really had fun spelling this name. It will make you crazy - even using the soundex. As soon as I find that notepad - I will post to the mailing list - I always do :>) HEY, HISTORY DETECTIVES ON TONIGHT - PBS. Hi Rene'e and all, My husband's line descends from Jacob Pennington, b. 1760 and his son, Abraham, b. 1781. They attended the Primitive Baptist Church in Hampshire County, VA/WVA, in the early 1800's. They moved to Highland County, Ohio, about 1828 or 1829. They are in the 1830 Census in Highland County, Ohio. I have been watching your emails in hopes to see something that may help me. I was thinking that Abraham that you have been talking about is the father of Jacob but I have no proof. Of course, time will tell all I hope. Take care, Judy Minihan
