This happened because Ancestry does not know what it is dealing with. The actual title of the series of records is "General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934". It covers not only the Civil War but the Spanish-American War, Philipine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion and the Regulars. WWI is not well represented because the Veterans Administration (now Bureau of Veterans Affairs) took the disability system over during WWI.
