At a later stage, a Mantle married a Holmes of Llanidloes. Is anyone else looking out for the Holmes? Two were mayors of Llanidloes, and had mill and publican interests. They later owned Pen-yr-allt on the outskirts of Llanidloes. The earliest I can go is a Holmes coming from Yorkshire in the 1780s who married Margaret Blayey - I have not been able to connect her with the Blayney's of Greygynog. I suspect there is as he was wealthy. Here's some more info on the Holmes, Mantles and related families. My earliest ancestor was John Holmes from Yorkshire who ran a woolen mill in Beriew - late c18th. In the parish registers a John Holmes married Margaret Blayney in 1789 at Berriew. Gwynne's Marriage Index shows Margaret BLAYNEY, married (by banns) 17 October 1789 at Berriew, John HOLMES. His son, Richard Holmes, was Mayor of Llanidloes 1849 and owned the Cwmbelan wool factory, Llanidloes (SN 948 816)In C. E. Vaughan Owen 'An Arwystli Notebok', p.36 in 1852 one of the founding Directors of the Llanidloes-Newtown line was Alderman Richard Holmes [the line's contractor was David Davies of Llandinam]. Edith Holmes' g-grandmother was Hannah Titley of Glangynwydd (alias Titley's and Penpompren) Mill. Has anyone got an interest? Richard's g-grand-daughter Edith Holmes married David Thomas Mantle of Llandinam. His Grandfather was Evan Mantle of Cae Glas. Anyone encountered the Mantle's particularly Evan? David's mother was Jane Gravenor of Llandinam (father was Thomas).
