My great-aunt, Margaret Jane Jones, was born 1876/7 at Twgwydor, Llanfair Clydogau, Cardiganshire. 1901 census Bethesda shows her at Royal Oak, Rachub. My grandfather believed she married a Sharples and had a son, Leonard sharples, who was in the navy WW1 and killed when his ship was torpedoed. We would be very grateful for any information about these family members. Marion O'Sullivan. Australia.
Hi Marian, If Margaret was still unmarried in the 1901 census, it doesn't seem to give her much time to get married and have a son who was old enough to fight and die in World War 1, unless he lied about his age. If you search for his birth registration on Freebmd in the period 1900-1910, the earliest candidate was born in the September Quarter of 1902 in Prestwich in Lancashire and the next in 1904 in Bolton, Lancashire. Could it have been World War 2 do you think? http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site allows you to search for those fatally wounded in both wars, there are no results for a Leonard Sharples. Could he have had another forename? http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14 Another option is to contact the National Archives, to see if they can help: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step5.htm Rina http://www.a-glamorgan-family.com/index.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marion O'Sullivan" <gwiwer10@bigpond.net.au> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2007 5:45 AM Subject: [POWYS] (Powys)Margaret Jane Jones. Hello Rina, I only have my grandfather's memory to rely on as far as the boy's name was concerned. He was said to be "an ensign/midshipman" and died when his ship was torpedoed. His age is a worry! My grandfather came to Australia in 1911 and my father and his step-mother in 1913. I have no idea who supplied the family news. Thank you for your help. I'll keep looking. Regards, Marion. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rina Callingham" <emma.callingham@tesco.net> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 1:20 AM Subject: Re: [POWYS] (Powys)Margaret Jane Jones. Marion, Ensign is a US Navy rank, and is their equivalent to midshipman. So perhaps you could try the records for the Australian Navy, probably held in Canberra ! Hello! I found a marriage for a Maggie Jones - could this be Margaret - to a Samuel Sharples. 1903 Sep. Qtr Prestwich, Lancashire. 8d 737. Then I found a birth for Lydia D. Sharples. 1911 Dec. Qtr Salford, Lancashire 8d 49. Mother's maiden name: Jones. How rewarding would the above marriage certificate be? Marion. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rina Callingham" <emma.callingham@tesco.net> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 1:20 AM Subject: Re: [POWYS] (Powys)Margaret Jane Jones.
