    1. [POWYS] Powys: BRE: A Maddy marriage

    3. Hi Listers, Here is a piece of information for anyone interested in the BRE Maddy family. In Sep Q 1885, Walter Maddy married Elizabeth Davies, in Brecknock Registration District. Walter seems to be the Walter found, in 1881 census, aged 19 in the Cottage, Llanvigan, Breconshire and living with his widowed father, Thomas and siblings Evan, Elizabeth, Thomas, Gwen and James. My interest in the marriage lies with Elizabeth Davies. Elizabeth’s maiden name should have been Winter as she was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Winter who was from Crickadarn. Margaret died of small pox in 1858, aged 29 years, when Elizabeth was just a year old. Elizabeth was then taken in by Margaret’s older sister, Ann Winter (my Great Great Grandmother) who in 1850 married a schoolmaster called David Davies. Elizabeth Winter was brought up with her 2 cousins, Ann (my Great Grandmother) and Mary in the School house in Battle, Brecon. It is interesting that Elizabeth married under the name of her Uncle and Aunt and this prevented me for a long time from finding her marriage. I knew from Family oral history that she had married a man surnamed Maddy and that they had settled in Sheffield, where I believe their descendents still live. Hope this is of help to someone.
