    3. Thanks for that, Lyn, Just a bit of background for you and anyone else who might be interested. Llangoed Castle or Hall as it is known, is situated in the BRE village of Llyswen. Sir Clough William-Ellis thought Llangoed was built upon the site of Wales’s legendary White Palace, then the fledgling Welsh Parliament. In AD 560 Prince Iddon gave it to the See of Llandaff in expiation of his sins. Its status as an Episcopal Grange is confirmed by Pope Calixtas in 1119. After the reformation Sir Henry Williams of Old Gwernyfed, Three Cocks, BRE built a mansion on the ruined granges foundations in 1632 and it is his coat of arms that can be seen over the south portico. The Williamses did not live in it at first and it was actually inhabited by the Winter/Wynter family (my ancestors) for about 200 years. The Williams family then took back the Hall. In 1880 the Llangoed estate was won in a gambling bout by John Macnamara Esq. In 1912, Mr. Archibald Christy, the then owner commissioned Sir Clough William-Ellis to redesign the house. Llangoed was the first and largest country house commission for Sir clough William-Ellis who incorporated the original 17th century south wing with beautiful arched Jacobean porch into his design. Romantically sited above the river Wye it is of first importance as a major early 20th century country house built in Wales. Long empty, by the 1980’s and succumbing to dry rot, the owner applied unsuccessfully to demolish the house. Llangoed Hall was bought by Sir Bernard Ashley (husband of Laura Ashley of fabrics and clothing fame) who has restored it to its former glory. It is now a successful country house hotel with over 20 bedrooms and suites. I have adapted the following site for the short introduction above (http://past-caring.com/Llangoed-Hall.htm) Put "Macnamara Llangoed" into Google and a great deal of info comes up, if you are interested Similarily, if you are interested in the older history of the Hall, go into the following on line book by Wendy Garcia Winter called "The Golden Falcon" (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/index.htm) The 2 pages below, from this book, gives the history of the BRE Wynter/Winter family and their connection with Llangoed. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/ch8-06.htm from half way down the page "Fair Palace" (ie LLyswen) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/ch8-07.htm Hope this helps.
