You can also call up a highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) late 19th century map of this area by going to the Old Maps website at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ On the main page, click on the illustration which states "Click here to begin your search". On the search page which appears, enter 316385 and 266690 into the co-ordinates search fields and click the GO button alongside. When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarge Map" icon on the right-hand tab. A highly detailed map of the area will open in a new window, centred on 'Old Hall' and also showing OldHall Wood and Old Hall Inn. The 1891 census (RG12/4583 Folio 76 Page 5) shows the Old Hall household to have been headed by 'William W T Moore', aged 80, a 'Proprietor of Lands' and 'Magistrate', born at Radnor. He was accompanied by his wife 'Eliza T Moore' (73), granddaughter Eliza E Thomas (13), and three servants. The 1901 census (RG13/5183 Folio 83 Page 8) shows the Old Hall household still to have been headed by 'William W Thomas-Moore' (90) , widower, a 'Magistrate, living on own means', born New Radnor. He was accompanied by his son Thomas Thomas-Moore (49) also a 'Magistrate, living on own means', born Aberedw, RAD; his daughter Evangeline M Thomas-Moore (47) born Aberedw; his granddaughter Laura J Thomas-Moore (30) born Aberedw; another grandddaughter Emily M Thomas-Moore (26) born Titley, Herefordshire; and three servants. The 1901 census shows a number of other members of the same Thomas-Moore family living in England, but I wasn't able to spot your elusive Marian Kate among them. Hello John, I must be doing something wrong but when I follow your instructions as set out below, and I try to enlarge the map I receive a message saying that because of copyright problems, enlargement is prohibited. Am I the only one getting this response? I should welcome your comments Gordon -----Original Message----- From: powys-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:powys-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Ball Sent: 10 November 2007 10:51 To: powys@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [POWYS] Dolau RSD (formerly DOLAN RSO) Barbara Kearns <bkea7361@mail.usyd.edu.au> wrote: Many thanks to John Ball, and John Breese and John Hopkins for clarifying the meaning of 'Dolau' for me - and for locating members of the Moore family of 'Old Hall'. =================== Dear Barbara, 'Old Hall' is identified by name on modern Ordnance Survey Landranger maps of the area - for example on the Streetmaps website: www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=315067&Y=266629&A=Y&Z=3 which shows Dolau (on the left), Llanfihangel Rhydithon parish church (centre), and Old Hall (right).
