Dennis is the old school still in existence? Are there any photos? There is much written about that era, and a Visitor Centre is now by the old school and first Dam area, with lots of books and other things to buy and see re the history there. Our local Powys FHS man and Cronicl Editor Lloyd Lewis in Rhayader can also help you in this I think, as he gave us a very good talk on the Elan Valley recently. The school records are lost I think, but Powys Archives here in Llandrindod Wells will have some records, and some of these are online for Schools, etc. Go to Internet:http://archives.powys.gov.uk and/or Email _archives@powys.gov.uk_ (mailto:archives@powys.gov.uk) for more info. A good small book to read is "The Elan Valley Railway" by Kidner ?? , with lots of history and many photo's of the early days there, and the Dams, School, and Village buildings, but many early ones were just wooden huts!!! I will send you the book details asap, as my copy is not to hand today. A GOLDBY family of engineers I know also went to NZ like yours and Lloyd Lewis has their history too. Are there any photos? =================== Dear Joy If you perform a Google search using the key words 'Elan Village School' you'll find links to a profusely illustrated web feature on the 'Elan Valley Dams' at http://history.powys.org.uk/history/rhayader/elanmenu.html The feature is part of the excellent Powys Digital History Project. On the opening page, follow the link to 'The Elan Village' where you'll find seven webpages on the history of the village. The many photos include one of the temporary wooden school and its staff in 1898 (on page 5). I quote: ------------- The original village school in the valley of Nantgwyllt was to be among many other buildings abandoned and demolished with the coming of the waterworks to the Elan Valley. This was to be temporarily replaced by a wooden schoolhouse provided in 1895 by Birmingham Corporation within the navvies village, then later by a stone-built school below Caban Coch dam at the end of the project. The school was for children up to the age of 11, after which they were legally able to work. ------------- I strongly recommend that your explore the entire 'Elan Valley Dams' feature, as the village school is mentioned on other pages, too.
