Are there any photos? =================== Dear Joy If you perform a Google search using the key words 'Elan Village School' you'll find links to a profusely illustrated web feature on the 'Elan Valley Dams' at http://history.powys.org.uk/history/rhayader/elanmenu.html The feature is part of the excellent Powys Digital History Project. On the opening page, follow the link to 'The Elan Village' where you'll find seven webpages on the history of the village. The many photos include one of the temporary wooden school and its staff in 1898 (on page 5). I quote: ------------- The original village school in the valley of Nantgwyllt was to be among many other buildings abandoned and demolished with the coming of the waterworks to the Elan Valley. This was to be temporarily replaced by a wooden schoolhouse provided in 1895 by Birmingham Corporation within the navvies village, then later by a stone-built school below Caban Coch dam at the end of the project. The school was for children up to the age of 11, after which they were legally able to work. ------------- I strongly recommend that your explore the entire 'Elan Valley Dams' feature, as the village school is mentioned on other pages, too.
