Hello Everyone, I now own a converted barn which was part of The Neuadd at Cwmcamlais, called Tan Y Neuadd. I was wondering about the history of the Neuadd. Would any of you be able to provide any information? Many thanks Peter James
Peter, You may be interested to see the family who occupied Neuadd in 1881: 1881 Census Index Dwelling: Neuadd Census Place: Devynnock, Brecon, Wales Source: FHL Film 1342313 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5457 Folio 73 Page 2 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Edward EVANS M 69 M Devynnock, Brecknock, Wales Rel: Head Occ: Farmer Of 136 Acres Emp 3 Men Rachel EVANS M 60 F Devynnock, Brecknock, Wales Rel: Wife Occ: Farmer Wife David EVANS U 29 M Devynnock, Brecknock, Wales Rel: Son Occ: Farmer Son Alice EVANS U 26 F Devynnock, Brecknock, Wales Rel: Daur Occ: Farmer Daur Thomas EVANS U 24 M Devynnock, Brecknock, Wales Rel: Son Occ: Farmer Son Rachel LEWIS U 16 F Devynnock, Brecknock, Wales Rel: Serv Occ: Domestic Servant Blaencamlais Fach was enumerated before Neuadd, occupied by an 80-year-old widow, Sarah PRICE, Farmer of 180 acres, employing 3 men & 1 boy, together with her son, Richard, and a domestic servant. Next entry was Pantygelynen, occupied by an Agricultural Labourer, John MORGAN, age 64 and his wife and grandson (one Roger HAVARD). The entry that follows Neuadd in the enumeration was for Blaencamlais Fawr, occupied by Philip WILLIAMS, Farmer of 150 acres. You can also do a search on the National Library of Wales website http://www.llgc.org.uk/ -- online databases (Under "Family History", then "Search Archival Databases", then choose "Archives & Manuscripts [before 1999 and after 1999]) -- to see what might pop up. Often, the results will show various land leases covering a span of many years -- be sure to use creative spelling. Good luck! Hi Peter I thought it may be of interest to you to know that my ancestors Thomas and Cecilia Jones worked and lived nearby to your barn. If you check the 1841 census for Blaencamlais Fach you will note that a Siscil (Cecilia) Jones is employed at the farm as a female servant. On the date of her marriage on 24 November 1843 she gives her residence address as the farm along with Thomas Jones her to be husband. They were both employed as servants at the farm. They married in Devynnock (spelt this way on the marriage lines) Church and later moved to Merthyr Tydfil. I visited the farm a few years ago and the farm house is still there now occupied by the farmers daughter. A new farmhouse is also there and the farmer said that there were a lot of records in his loft and he would take them to Brecon Library so I would check there to see if there is anything on the barn. Kind regards Heather Hello Everyone, I now own a converted barn which was part of The Neuadd at Cwmcamlais, called Tan Y Neuadd. I was wondering about the history of the Neuadd.
