Hi Everyone, I'm just embarking on my EDMUNDS line & thought I would introduce myself . My grandfather John EDMUNDS was buried at St Elli in Llanelly parish in 1962 (age about 42). My father was born in Gilwern & I remember him telling me that his family were from Llanelly Hill. I'm waiting to receive a copy of John's death cert at the moment, after which I intend to send for what I think is the correct birth cert (EDMUNDS John, Sept Qtr 1919, Mother: REES, Crickhowell 11b, 142). Whilst I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the certs , I've been doing some theoretical research. The only EDMUNDS - REES marriage I can spot on FreeBMD which looks to fit is for Benjamin EDMUNDS to Margaret Ann REES (Mar Qtr 1904, Crickhowell 11b, 150). The 1881 census turned up a possible match for Benjamin: Dwelling: Llamarch Census Place: Llanelly, Brecon, Wales William Edmund Head M Male 36 1845 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Coal Miner Elizabeth Edmund Wife M Female 37 1844 Ebbw Vale, Monmouth, England James Edmund Son Male 13 1868 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Scholar William Edmund Son Male 11 1870 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Scholar Benjamin Edmund Son Male 9 1872 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Scholar Mary Anne Edmund Daur Female 7 1874 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Scholar Jane Edmund Daur Female 5 1876 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Scholar John Edmund Son Male 2 1879 Llanelly, Brecknock, Wales Scholar Obviously, I'm aware that I have no real evidence that I'm going in the right direction at the moment & will need to send for a good many certs in the months to come. I just wanted to say hello & see if anyone else is looking for EDMUNDS' in Llanelly parish. I was also wondering if any records are available to view at St Elli? Best wishes, Catherine
Hi Catherine, You're headed in the right direction; that is, working back in time and following the 'paper trail'. Order all relevant b/m/d certificates and be sure to locate the family on the later census returns (1891, 1901) as well as earlier than the one you found in 1881. (Look around at the neighbors for any family connections.) Some recommendations: 1) Join the Powys Family History Society -- excellent resources, good membership base (many are not online who are longtime members), and a terrific journal, "Cronicl". Powys FHS website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlspfhs/ 2) Church records are not available for viewing at the churches. They're held at the Powys County Archives Office, Llandrindod Wells, and at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. Powys Archives website: http://www.powys.gov.uk/index.php?id=647&L=0& NLW: http://www.llgc.org.uk/ 3) Suggest you thoroughly explore the GENUKI site for Breconshire (and for Wales, in general, as well as for Llanelly, in particular), maintained by my cohort in list administration, John Ball - http://www.genuki.org.uk:8080/big/wal/BRE/ 4) Many of the family history societies are now participating with this for-pay website -- check to see which records may help your research: http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp There may be some on this list with material that could help your search, although things have been very quiet lately.
