He married a Jane (Hargest) and the 1851 census shows Richard as a 36 year old tailor and Jane as a 34 year old dressmaker at 1 Mount Street, St. Mary's, Brecknock, Wales. Living with 5 of their children. Can someone tell me how I'm to find his birth information and marriage information? ===================== Dear Lillian, The 1851 census shows the eldest child still living at home with Richard and Jane was 16 years old (born circa 1834/35) so Richard's marriage to Jane was probably around the same time or earlier. Thus both his birth and his marriage took place before the commencement of civil registration in 1837. You will need to rely on church records for the marriage and church or chapel records for his baptism (in the absence of birth records). The census gives both Richard and Jane's place of birth as Brecon St Mary's, so St Mary's Church records need to be consulted. The relevant webpage on the GENUKI website states that extant records for St Mary's include: "... Baptisms 1684-1958, Marriages 1684-1976." The original parish registers are held at the National Library of Wales (Aberystwyth), with microfilmed copies at Powys Archives (Llandrindod Wells). It may be advisable also to consult the records of St John's Church (Brecon), as in the period in question St Mary's was a chapelry in St John's parish. It's quite possible that Richard was baptised in a nonconformist chapel rather than in the parish church. If so, you'll need to consult the chapel records at Powys Archives. The following notice is currently displayed on the Powys Archives website ( http://www.powys.gov.uk/ ): "Powys Archives is closed for its annual stocktake between Monday 4 February - Friday 15 February 2008." St Mary's Church, Brecon, is included in the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection' on my website at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/churches/search-fram.htm Kind regards, John -------------------- John Ball, Godre'r Graig, near Swansea, Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2005.plus.com John's Homepage: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/ Images of Wales: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/ Welsh Family History Archive: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/wales/ GENUKI Breconshire Maintainer: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/ Joint Administrator - Powys (& BRE/MGY/RAD) RootsWeb mailing lists
Hello Lillian, As per John's suggestions: Richard Tustian married Jane Hargest on 11th December 1834 at Brecon, St. Mary. Banns were posted. This is the only Tustian marriage in this database (1813-1837). There are 5 other Hargest entries (all male), but none for the same church.
