Hi Neil NLW= National Library of Wales TNA= The National Archives (formerly PRO=Public Record Office) The Kain & Oliver book - as far as I remember - is useful as an index to tell you which microfilm you need to look at for the Tithe Apportionments.? I have used it at TNA. One of the best means of tracking down land owners very specifically is to check the list of Tithe apportionments - a reference document compiled at the time the tithe map was drawn up.? I believe that the one for Trefeglwys dates from 1848 & in it you should be able to find the names of owners & occupiers of all the properties in the parish. You?will probably?need to go to the NLW or TNA or the Powys CAO to find Tithe apportionments, and you may need to consult a reference book by Kain & Oliver (The Tithe Maps of England & Wales) which should lead you to the right document. Hope this helps. Ruth Hi Ruth, Thanks for the suggestion. By a stroke of luck I have found that from 1588 until 1920 the land around Cwm Biga was owned by University College Oxford and was occupied by a number of tenant farmers. Given the proximity to two much bigger farms , I wonder whether one of them was subletting a portion of their land. I certainly will be looking into what the kain & Oliver book has to tell me . Fortunately my local university library has a copy. Just one thing. What do the initials NLW and TNA signify?
