Dear Listers... If you are not too busy!...I'm trying to tie up loose ends....and wondered if anyone out there could help . 1.Greenwoods of Llanbister Powys They were a farming family in the 18th and 19th centuries, and I have their bmd from local parish church - and to cut a long story short - one of their descendents returned from Ontario Canada in the early 1890's to become Viscount Hamar Greenwood of Llanbister in the 1920's. t's known that he re-visited Wales on his migration back to the home country c 1893 : he had little money though he had a Canadian law degree - and probably called on his great aunt Adeliza* - who was married to a successful grocer/draper John Clee in Knighton. It's thought that Hamar may have earned his keep giving lectures on Temperance. Were there any local records about Temperance in this part of Wales or nearby Shropshire? Are there any newspaper reports about him in Wales at this time on temperance meetings? Also at the outbreak of WW1, he was a " celebrity " involved in recruiting for The South Welsh Borderers as he was their Lieutenant Colonel until the regiment went to France in 1915 : only briefly served in France, before he served under Lord Derby at the War Office to get more "volunteers" / organise compulsory recruitment. c 1916. Again any newspaper reports etc? (We visited Brecon cathedral some years ago where there is a chapel dedicated to the memory of the SWB and a commemorative plaque with his name) Any help welcome! 2. Charles Stewart Davies* in Llandrinod Wells He was involved in the late Victorian successful "spa town" tourist trade! as a hotel proprietor and as an electro mechanical masseur in Park Terrace..... Always wondered what kind of equipment was used in this practice! Anyone got any ideas or know details of such equipment ? We last visited the old spa and archives there some 10 years ago. Finally Charles Stewart was a founder member of Llandrinod Golf club - on previous enquiries we didn't find any more information, though think a history of this club was being prepared. Possibly photos would have been taken of the founders etc?... and ended up in magazines/newspapers Hope this is of interest! Richard and Pam (nee Clee) in Surrey * Our family connection
Richard and Pam How far back do you have a lineage for Charles Stewat Davie?. I'm trying to find family from William Davis, b. 1640 and his son William, b. 1663 in Llanstephan, Radnorshire (Powys), Wales who emigrated to America in 1684. Hi Tim Expected to find the DAVIES lineage was Welsh - and undaunted researched all the Charles Davies about the same age- but somehow it didn't work! Out of the blue, I had an internet message from someone in St Helens Lancashire, whose relative had married a Charles Stewart Davies - and they were house builders there and not Welsh. I wasn't convinced until I then discovered that this lady was his second wife and they had married in Brighton!- and she had been an assistant in his business in Llandrinod Wells...the first wife had died! So I don't think there's a link between your William Davis and Charles Stewart Davies Richard & Pam ps Still not found out why he called himself Charles STEWART Davies as he was born Charles Davies in St Helens, and became a masseur in South Wales - only changing his name when he came to Llandrinod Wells. Seems he did it so he had more uncommon and superior name! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Timothy Davis Sent: 01 December 2010 6:41 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [POWYS] Greenwood and Davis families in Powys Richard and Pam How far back do you have a lineage for Charles Stewat Davie?.
