Hi Hilary Thanks for your reply. In the end I simply tried the name, plus the known year, leaving the county and place fields blank, but there were still NO results for the first two quoted examples! I've built up quite a list of BMD enquiries concerning Llangattock residents, so the visit to the Powys County Archives Office should be quite productive. I don't know what it is, but putting the name and year into a search form and then clicking on the button 'Search' doesn't quite have the same resonance as running your eye down a list of names in a register (on paper or film) and then coming to a halt at the actual name of the person you are looking for, written in ink, in the original handwriting . . .
