Where would I get the image ================ Dear Marilyn, Have a look at the entry for the parish of Llangattock [Llangatwg] on the GENUKI website, which shows it to be in Breconshire: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llangatwg/ Also on GENUKI is a transcript of the entry for Llangattock from The National Gazetteer (1868): http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llangatwg/Gaz1868.html Traditionally, Blaina was in the Monmouthshire parish of Aberystruth - see a transcript of the 1901 Kelly's Monmouthshire Directory: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~familyalbum/kstrubla.htm The original Llangattock baptism registers for the period covering 1813-1897 are held at the Powys County Archives at Llandrindod Wells, where the images can be viewed on Microfilm 36. Hi List, Many thanks for that information. I think what threw me is that it was in the diocese of Monmouthshire This was in Wikipedia The Church of St Cadoc, is the parish church of <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llangattock_Lingoed>Llangattock Lingoed, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouthshire>Monmouthshire, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wales>Wales and sits in the centre of the village . Or is this a different church This was on the Royal Commission on Historic Monuments NPRN 307300 Map Reference SO32SE Grid Reference SO36142006 Unitary (Local) Authority Monmouthshire So you can see how I was confused. Since I am in Western Australia looks like I need to pay Powys Records again. Last time they didn't send any images of facts they did find. Just a report. Is this common? Many thanks Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia At 03:01 AM 29/09/2012, you wrote: >Marilyn Watson wrote: >My Elizabeth Davies was born here [St Cadoc's, Llangattock] in 13th August >1823 dau of Thomas Davies cordwainer and his wife Mary. >Originally my Elizabeth davies said she was born at Blaina or Blennay >Monmouthshire. >Is this church in Monmouthshire or Brecon? Or is this a different church This was on the Royal Commission on Historic Monuments NPRN 307300 Grid Reference SO36142006 Unitary (Local) Authority Monmouthshire =============== Dear Marilyn, The confusion is caused by the fact that there are several places in Wales named Llangattock (in Welsh, Llangatwg). For example "A Gazetteer of Welsh Place-names" lists five: one in Breconshire, one in Glamorgan, and three in Monmouthshire. The name Llangattock is usually followed by a geographical descriptor that distinguishes it from the other Llangattocks; e.g. the three Monmouthshire Llangattocks are: Llangattock nigh Usk, Llangattock Vibon Avel, and Llangattock Lingoed. You need to study your records carefully to see in which Llangattock your ancestor was christened. Actually, none of the Llangattocks would be the 'natural' parish for someone born in Blaina: you would normally expect them to be christened at St Peter's, the parish church for Aberystruth. But if you are sure the christening record you've found is for the correct Elizabeth Davies, and the records indicate the church was in Breconshire, then the Llangattock you are seeking is the one on the opposite bank of the Usk to Crickhowell. This is the one I referred to in my previous e-mail. Powys Archives only holds the registers for the Breconshire Llangattock. The records for the Monmouthshire Llangattocks are held by Gwent Archives, now situated in new premises at Ebbw Vale - http://www.gwentarchives.gov.uk/ My copy of "A Gazetteer of Welsh Place-names", edited by Elwyn Davies, was published in 1996 by University of Wales Press, Cardiff (ISBN 0-7083-1038-9) Kind regards, John -------------------- John Ball, Brecon, Mid-Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2011.co.uk Website: http://www.jlb2011.co.uk/
