Evening List, A fellow researcher recently acquired a document, a private census that contains detail that is usually not recorded - particularly for labourers. The census covers parts of Alberbury parish in both Montgomeryshire and Shropshire. He has kindly sent me images of the census, which I have made available here: http://forebears.co.uk/news/fascinating-shropshire-montgomeryshire-border-private-census Would be interested to hear if these are relevant to anyone. Even without a personal connection it still makes fascinating reading. I'm having problems deciphering some of the information. Does anyone have any idea what 'carden no land' '1/w mouth C.C.' means? David

Does anyone have any idea what 'carden no land' '1/w mouth C.C.' means? =========== Dear David, What a terrific find! If I found one of my ancestors was listed I'd be overjoyed. Thank you for making these available to us. I think 'carden no land' is 'Garden, no land'; i.e. the person has a garden but no other land. See the bottom of column 3 on page 1. There are references elsewhere to 'garden good'. '1/w mouth C.C.' I think is a reference to an amount (1/-) paid per (pr) month to some kind of club. The writer uses B.C. as the abbreviation for Benefit Club, so I'd suggest C.C. refers to something similar. Other payments are sometimes expressed as '1/pr week'. That looks interesting? Was this all of Shropshire and Montgomeryshire or particular parts? When was this census taken? Hello David, Thank you for that insight into rural life near industrial activity. Could the document be the handover notes of a retiring collector of savings and in some cases also rents - a briefing for his successor?
