Hi David I think there is a difference between the recent claim that Breconshire, etc. parish records have been added to findmypast's database and the existing, say, census records. In respect of census records I can definitely say that I've found entries through the findmypast transcriptions, which have not shown up via Ancestry or (in the case of the 1881 Census) the FamilySearch website. So, findmypast has a valuable part to play in family history research. I'm wondering whether there is some technical error at present which has resulted with anticipated entries, that are known to exist in parish records, not currently showing up? You can search for individuals without putting in any county or parish/place information and, certainly as far as my own research goes, this still doesn't produce the anticipated results. It's rather sad, really. In years past I have located relatives on OPRs filmed by the LDS people - I have date, page and number - yet when checking certain FMP copies which state for instance, baptisms 1726-1915 for the parish, they are not to be found. It would seem that certain pages were missed during scanning or were not supplied. Of course, it is a delight when one find a few who previously could not be found due to lack of resources. So, suppose one can't grumble. Mind you, I wouldn't want to be trying that without a subscription - could get very expensive. The other day I went through quite a number of possibles without find the correct one. Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz
Hi All I have found that many of my relatives are missing from these transcriptions. As well as parishes missing of which Findmypast acknowledge and list, there are many people missing from the parishes that have been transcribed and that fall within the date range shown for a given parish. I hope this is still a work in progress and there are still records to add. There is a particular parish, Bodfuan, in CAE, where I transcribed my relatives from original church records and most of them are missing from Findmypast. Regards Allan
Some of the registers are not connected to a parish, which may be part of the problem. Yet another issue is that some registers are in the wrong country, e.g. Llansilin is in both Denbigh & Montgonery. FMP are particularly error prone and as a web developer I can confidently say their development team are not up to the grade required to deal with 100s of millions of records. Their search system is antiquated and much slower than it could be with a few tweaks. David On Wed, 2012-07-04 at 09:56 +1000, Graham Price wrote: > It's rather sad, really. Further to my message about some counties being wrongly attached to the new findmypast parish registers: it seems to be even more of a problem. I am reasonably sure that some of the wrong parishes have been attached to records. For example, judging by abode names, it seems that some Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire, records have been listed as being in Llanllechid, Caernarfonshire. Many thanks, Nicola, for alerting us to these problems. I too have already found some problems with these findmypast transcriptions, for instance, an Owen Griffith being indexed as Griffith Owen. I also failed to find, via the search procedures, a baptismal record that I had already seen in the Merionethshire County Archives. But I was able to track it down by accessing another entry in the same parish register for around the same time and then using the 'previous' and 'next' commands to browse the pages, and so I recommend trying this if people can't immediately find what they are looking for. I suppose such teething problems are inevitable with such a large project, but I hope it will be possible for users to alert the site to the various errors. Superb.......thank you . I feel so nostalgic! Ann. Sent: Sunday, 1 July 2012, 14:15 Subject: Re: [POWYS] Powys Family History Facebook page Angela, you may need to change the visibility settings for the page. It does not come up in a search for any of several combinations I tried. You have to have the link to find the page. To get more "likes," you need to make the page easier to find in a FB search. Great idea! Thanks for setting the page up. *Katherine Benbow * On Sun, Jul 1, 2012 at 8:01 AM, Angela Jones <angieprobertjones@hotmail.com>wrote: > > HI, > The site is shown under Powys Family History Society > http://www.facebook.com/#!/PowysFamilyHistorySociety > Hope that this helps. > Happy hunting > Angela > > =================== > Visit the Powys Mailing List webpage at: www.jlb2011.co.uk/powyslist.htm > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > POWYS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message > =================== Visit the Powys Mailing List webpage at: www.jlb2011.co.uk/powyslist.htm ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to POWYS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hello list, Powys Family History Society now has a Facebook page where information, events, etc can be shown to add to the many ways in which the society supports its members. Please do visit - you do have to be a Facebook member but you don't have to be a PFHS member! It is early days but we are working on it... Many thanks Angela
Angela, you may need to change the visibility settings for the page. > Happy hunting > Angela > > =================== > Visit the Powys Mailing List webpage at: www.jlb2011.co.uk/powyslist.htm > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > POWYS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message >
Hi, Wondered if some kind soul could help I am looking for the marriage of THOMAS DAVIES cordwainer to SARAH LLEWELYN c 1818 Their dau Ann was born at Aberwr Radnorshire c 1819. Surviving children were Elizabeth born Blaina Monmouthshire John born Pembrokeshire and Margaret born Llanelly Breconshire. Both Thomas d. 1842 and Sarah d. 1835 died at Brynmawr and are buried at St Elli's Any help welcome Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia
Thanks Lynne, But his mother seems to have been a Jane JONES. Also in 1838 he was described as Full Age on his marriage certificate, making him born around 1817 which fits with the 1841 age of '20'. Hi Mike, I expect you have thought about this, but the family might have been, or become, non-conformists. Many of the people in my trees 'disappear' in this way, and there are many burials in non-conformist graveyards by the 1850s. All the best Shirley ________________________________________ From: powys-bounces@rootsweb.com [powys-bounces@rootsweb.com] on behalf of Mike YEGWART [mike.yegwart@btinternet.com] Sent: 28 June 2012 22:59 To: Powys Subject: [POWYS] MGY Burial of Robert HUMPHREYS near Welshpool Hi Folks, I'm struggling to find the burial of my 3 x gt grandfather. In the 1841 Robert (Robt) HUMPHREYS was a 'farmer' in Meifod. By 1851 his wife, Mary, nee JONES, was a widow and housekeeping in Stredalfedan, Welshpool. (The 1851 census for Stredalfedan &Tydyn Prydd was less than 3 pages.) Robert and Mary's last son, Joseph was baptised in the Parish of Welshpool on the 14th November 1847, so Robert was probably alive for his conception. And there was no indication on the Baptism that Robert has already died. I have found a second quarter death in 1849 on FreeBMD for a Robert HUMPHREYS in the District of Llanfyllin, aka Welshpool. Using the newly released FindMyPast, parish records I cant find a burial. (Robert doesn't appear to have been baptised either, although his 1838 marriage to Mary gives his father as John, and is described as full age, making a birth before 1817.) Has anyone any ideas, please?
