Hello All, I am hoping someone out there lives in Merthyr Cynog and can help me track down a relative. On the 1911 census John Price a shepherd age 63 born Llanfiangle Nant bran and his wife Elizabeth age 70 born Carmarthen, Llanfair bryn are living at Blaengwy farm Merthyr Cynog. They have been married 33 years. Elizabeth lists that she had 1 child and that he is alive in 1911. The one child they had was Rees Price born about 1879 in Gwenddwr,Breconshire,Wales. On the 1901 census Rees Price age 22 born Gwenddwr is a servant of Anne Jones a widow age 71 born Llanafan. They are living at Disgwylfa farm Merthyr Cynog. I am not sure were Rees is living in 1911. Can anyone help me with this family ? Kind Regards Robert Price.
I agree entirely with John and I see no reason why one cannot use shortened URLs. The Glamorgan Mailing List's website is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~glamorgan/ I often use TinyURL - I just tried it out with this long address and here is the result. ========================== TinyURL was created! The following URL: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~glamorgan/ has a length of 60 characters and resulted in the following TinyURL which has a length of 26 characters: http://tinyurl.com/7gm4ne4 [Open in new window] Or, give your recipients confidence with a preview TinyURL: http://preview.tinyurl.com/7gm4ne4 [Open in new window] ========================================== I do like the preview for those who are cautious. For example, an e-mail program's word-wrapping feature may cause a long URL to be split onto two lines, especially if the URL contains a hyphen [-]. The one I prefer is TinyURL (http://tinyurl.com/) which has been around for many years. All the shortened URLs generated by TinyURL include "http://tinyurl.com/" in the URL. For example: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/group/ukicen/UK_Census_Collection.aspx is shortened to http://tinyurl.com/cg7wtgh As has been mentioned, real spam messages almost always contain either no supporting text, or text that is badly expressed and/or poorly spelt, or text which is irrelevant to genealogy. Thanks for your note, I made a mistake in my initial mail. I should have said GenFair instead of GENUKI. For some reason GenFair do not stock the publication: Mochdre Baptisms and Burials 1765-1812, Marriages 1764-1783 (2000, 2nd edition 2004) I likewise was not able to find Mochdre BMDs misallocated on FMP & have records up to 1764 to check against. Hello David The Mochdre parish registers seem to be available from GENFAIR: http://www.genfair.co.uk/product_details.php?pid=11097 I think the relevant registers are missing altogether from FMP and not among those which have been misallocated. I have checked for some births which I know occurred in Mochdre in the late 1760s (although I cannot be certain that the children were baptised in church) and cannot find any of them in any parish. Hi All I didn't like the look of the link, either, and would have avoided it like the plague. The message surrounding it seemed to be OK, but I do think there is a serious problem with links that bypass the http://www. addressing system because of the threat from spurious e-mails and websites. When there is a name there, as with http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl people can make their own reasoned judgement, based on past experience. So, why on earth doesn't a 'findmypast' shortcut include the name 'findmypast' somewhere in the address? I suggest ignoring links like this until the web developers concerned get their act together and put more reasonable thinking into their design work. I'd definitely advise avoiding any links that don't look familiar, just to be safe. The IT people need to take into account the problem of viruses and bad web-links and act accordingly - and not design new systems that are ambiguous as to their veracity - as if they're living in a world of their own where it is assumed everyone else will know what they're doing is genuine, when they're actually making themselves look like spammers. Hi Steve I agree that examining the text can help but some spammers duplicate legitimate data. Most spammers though are illiterate and can't string two words together, that alone a sentience. Hi David and Steve The problem is spammers also use this system. For safety reasons no one should open links that they can't relate to. It could be linked to a site that could down load dangerous content. By using and making people think that these short cuts are safe can lead to their computer being violated and in the worst case they may loose all of their data. I am an IT Manager and no one in out company is allowed to open links they don't know. Our systems will block the site from opening anyway. Hi all Various other Rootsweb sites that I belong to have been spammed recently but none of the accompanying text ever refers to genealogical information so you can spot those. As for using the short cut links some Rootsweb sites prefer that you use them when posting long links otherwise they get broken up and aren't clickable. Hi Steve That's what spam websites look like, so its a dangerous habit to use shortcuts that look like tht. It's better just to present the real web site then there's not confusion. I get junk emails regularly that look like that, so I just delete them for safety. Allan On 13/07/2012 9:35 AM, Steve Williams wrote: > No, it is not a SPAM address. It's a "short link", typically used to make long links short, particularly for forums, emails, mailing lists etc. where they may get truncated and not work. See: http://goo.gl/ and others. Many Welsh PRs have just been added on-line (index and original image): http://tidd.ly/958288d3 See the lists for coverage, though note there may be some gaps in the years. Glascwm & Colfa are both on there. Hi Allen, Good point. Many junk email links look like that. My point is that if very pertinent and on-topic text is found surrounds the link, one should be able to trust the link. In this case: "Many Welsh PRs have just been added on-line... See the lists for coverage, though note there may be some gaps in the years... *Glascwm & Colfa* are both on there." Many popular websites these days have shortcut link sites: bit.ly (very popular shortcut site), tidd.ly (Twitter short cut site, I believe), goo.gl (Google short cut site), etc. People should certainly not have to know all of these short-cut sites, so examining the text around them is important.
