    1. [POWYS] Brecon Railway
    2. Roger M Evans
    3. John, Following on from your note on the Brecon Railways Exhibition On an investigative trip to the Sennybridge area I was told of the failed attempt to build a connection from the Brecon/Swansea line to connect with Builth Wells, apparently the money ran out when difficult tunnelling was experienced up the Cillenni valley, they just closed off the tunnel and left everything buried, whatever that means. I wonder if the Breconshire Local & Family History Society (BLFHS) could confirm this and the likely date Regards Roger M Evans

    3. Dear Listers, The Breconshire Local & Family History Society (BLFHS) has announced the opening of an exhibition of photographs and maps commemorating the 50th anniversary of the closure of railway passenger services in Brecon. I quote from the BLFHS website: ------------------ Brecon Railways Exhibition Brecon Library – throughout January 2013 Railway passenger services in Brecon ended in December 1962. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the closure of Brecon's passenger railways we are running an exhibition of 'then and now' photographs in Brecon Library, Ship Street, Brecon. The exhibition is curated by BLFHS Committee Member Rob Eckley, who has provided many of the photographs. Please drop in and explore the photographs for yourself. We hope they will evoke happy memories of the railways in and around Brecon. ------------------ Further details are on the News page of the BLFHS website: www.blfhs.co.uk/ Kind regards, John -------------------- John Ball, Brecon, Mid-Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2011.co.uk Personal Homepage: http://www.jlb2011.co.uk Images of Wales: http://www.jlb2011.co.uk/walespic/ Welsh Family History Archive: http://www.jlb2011.co.uk/wales/ Joint Webmaster, Breconshire Local & Family History Society http://www.blfhs.co.uk/ GENUKI Breconshire Maintainer: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/ Administrator - Powys (& BRE/MGY/RAD) RootsWeb mailing lists

    3. Hello Margaret and List, Yes, I do believe you found Elizabeth and John in Montour County! Thank you!!I'm starting to wonder if they did indeed have children.....I haven't found any. However, I also wondered about the Thomas Davis as John's son ... but at 21 he would have been born 5 years before John's marriage in 1834. He would also be a bit young to be John's brother. Still, there could be a relationship..... I have no idea who the Hughes family is with William and Sarah Prosser on the 1850 Bloom, Columbia Co census either. Looking at the ages of the Hughes, perhaps Mary Hughes could be a daughter of John and Elizabeth Davies.... I will look at the Hughes more closely to see what turns up. I thank you so much for taking the time to help out. I am sure you've found the correct John an Elizabeth in 1850. Genuki says that Cemais is in Monmouthsire, which looks odd to me, as I was expecting Montgomeryshire. Looking at the image I can see the entry I want: > > "Jane d. of Owen Owens & Gwen his wife Jan'ry 26 (1800)" > > … and this is within the section "Llanddwywa baptisms 1800". 3. Hello, I've been chipping away at this problem for a couple of days, didn't have enough time to stick with it straight through. I'll include links at the end of the message, but here is a summary. If you already have these first two records, I apologize, but I didn't want to leave them out.: I found Wm and Sarah Prosser in the 1850 census in Bloom, Columbia, PA. Also, possibly Elizabeth's sister, although the husband's name is wrong. But the names of the children, taken together, seem to fit this family. They too are in Bloom. I found a candidate for John and Elizabeth in Montour County, PA, which was formed from Columbia in 1850. His age is a little off, but her's looks right. Unfortunately, there are no children listed. This location in Montour Co., isn't too far from Bloom (Bloomsburg), Columbia Co. I've provided a link to an 1850s map of the two counties. Bloomsburg is a little yellow area in the middle of Columbia Co. Also, the pagenweb.orgWeb site, similar to Genuki, has information about the two counties. On the same page, there’s a Thos Davis, 21, puddler, born in Wales, possible son of John and Elizabeth? 3. Have you checked the census with familysearch? Sometimes you can find names there that can't be found on Ancestry or HQ. Also is the Mary Davis on the Pocahontas related? Or could they just have been careless in the manifest? Things were not so formal then and people could pretty much come and go as they please. 1. [POWYS] Jane Owens b. 1800

    3. I'm looking for some help with the location of the parish of Llanddwywa. I am searching for Jane Owens born c. 1800 and am using www.findmypast.com. I can find what looks like the record I want. It is part of the Powys FHS collection and gives the place of baptism as Cemais. Genuki says that Cemais is in Monmouthsire, which looks odd to me, as I was expecting Montgomeryshire. Looking at the image I can see the entry I want: "Jane d. of Owen Owens & Gwen his wife Jan'ry 26 (1800)" … and this is within the section "Llanddwywa baptisms 1800". This time Genuki suggests LLlanddwywau (Llanddwywe) as a possibility. But this is in Merionethshire. I am now confused whether the parish is Cemais or Llanddwywa and whether it is really in Montgomeryshire. Your wisdom appreciated. Mike Powell

    3. Hello Eliz and List, Yes, John and Elizabeth are lost in 1850. I found them on the 1860 US Census:1860 US Census, Bloom, Columbia Co, PA Image 23 Elizabeth age 50 and John Davies age 53 (Davis) and Sarah Prosser age 76 -Eliz's mother (All born Wales) Birthplace: Wales Bloom, Columbia Co, PA Post Office: Bloomsburg Note the name is spelled Davis in 1860. As you can see, in 1860 there are no children listed with Elizabeth and John, only her mother, Sarah Prosser. Elizabeth and John were married in 2 Nov 1834 in Llanelly, BRE. I believe they emigrated around 1840-1844. There is an Elizabeth Prosser (not Davies) on the same ship Pocahontas arriving Aug 1844 Philadelphia. John is not on this page, but neither is Mary Prosser Lewis's husband, Henry, so perhaps the brother-in-laws came to America earlier...... Between the emigration time and the 1860 census, I can't find Elizabeth and John Davies. They almost surely lived in in a county of Pennsylvania not far from the 1860 abode of Columbia Co. I appreciate any assistance in locating Elizabeth and John and any children before or after 1860. 1. [POWYS] DAVIES of Llangurig and Bodaioch Hall, Trefeglwys
    2. Sharon McDermott
    3. Hoping to find others researching my family. Richard DAVIES born Llangurig abt 1812 married Mary (surname unknown). This Richard was widowed in 1881 and living in Glynbrochan (farmer of 160 acres) with 2 unmarried children. Their eldest son Richard (b1832 Llangurig - 1918 Trefeglwys) is my gt gt gt grandfather. Richard married Mary (surname also Davies) and had 10 children: Mary Jane b1861, Richard b1864, John b 1866, Margaret b 1868, Elizabeth (Lizzie) b 1871, Matilda (Tille) b1873, Ellen Louise (Nellie) b1876, and Thomas Edward b 1882. By 1871 the family were living in Bodaioch Hall in Trefeglwys, raising sheep. Thomas' daughter Mary still lives there. Richard and Mary's eldest daughter Mary Jane married Richard EDWARDS in 1881 and had 3 children - Mary Eleanor (aka Nellie m Llew Mills no issue), Richard Asaph and John Ernest (my gt grandfather). The two boys emigrated to Australia and had 2 (both living) and 8 (3 living incl my grandmother aged 91yrs) children respectively. When Richard snr died in 1897 Mary Jane married his nephew John Henry Davies and had 2 more children - Gwladys Myfanwy (m Charles Ioworth Evans no issue) and Cecil Edgar (m Adeline Breed no issue). This family lived in Talgarth House in Llanidloes. I'm having lots of trouble tracing marriages/issue/deaths of Mary Jane's siblings. I know that Thomas married Anna Mary Owen. I believe Lizzie married James Fulcher and Nellie married Evan Evans, but can't confirm these hunches as yet. For the others I have no marriages or deaths. Please contact me if you know anything of this family! Any bit of info would be helpful - contact with actual family members thrilling!!!!! Sharon Newcastle Australia
