Hi Nancy - yes that one is mine - Howel Probert m Ann Williams 1727 Crickadarn Breconshire their son Thomas is baptised at Cricadarn on the 31st March 1738 - I have a photo from the entry in the book at Crickadarn church, a cousin visited the church a couple of weeks ago. This Howel Probert could be the son of Thomas Probert the churchwarden. One of the old bells (the second bell) in the church was inscribed with his name along with that of the other church warden John Maddock. Unfortunately the original register with the relevant information that my cousin and I am after was lent by a previous vicar to a visiting American. The American never returned the register to the church. This was according to the present day incumbent of Crickadarn church. He did however give us the history around the time of these Proberts which was very interesting. Thomas Probert the churchwarden was married to Anne. When he died Anne inherited the farm and money. She then married a William Powell and they had children together who inherited the farm and money. This was before the womens property act of 1870. Thomas Probert's eldest son David thus lost out on his inheritance and went to America. Other children stayed and made their own way. Thomas Probert the churchwarden is buried at Crickadarn dated 1744. I am not sure about Thomas 1738 marrying Hannah Morgans at Gladestry, Brecs. it is a long way from Crickadarn! thank you for your help Diana ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Strickland" <nts@sti.net> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 9:06 PM Subject: Re: [POWYS] Probert, Breconshire >I have this one: > New-probertcd3 Query2 First Name Last Name Age Event Mo/Da Year > Parish/Town Location Parents Spouse Occupation Comments First Name of > Submitters Last Name of Submitters > howell probert > marr 12-16 1727 crickadarn brecon > anne williams-b1706 by banns Rhedegydd ap Probertdescendant Rhe > Probert > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Little Warren Farm" <littlewarrenfarm@btinternet.com> > To: "Powys" <Powys@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, June 15, 2007 10:48 PM > Subject: [POWYS] Probert, Breconshire > > >> >> Dear List, >> >> I wonder if anyone can help me on this one. >> >> I have a Howel Probert father of Thomas Probert bapt. 31st March 1738 >> Crickadarn. Hello everyone Could anyone help me to find where Gwynfrgh Place (looks like) Newtown or Kerry. It isn't in a current street map of Powys. This was an address in 1922. Many thanks Best wishes Shirley
Thank you Tom, David, Julie and John for your comments about my inability to access Carreg Cennen. John's suggestion was the one that worked and a special thanks to him. The 'Refresh' command was all that was necessary, and the result was well worth the help of you all. An excellent set of photos! Dear list, Can anyone tell me why someone living in Cardiganshire should be sent to Brecon Jail. It was a financial misdemeanour and not political. thank you Diana
I was just in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Library for a week and 1/2. I searched the Bishops records for the Psrish of Llandewi Brefi for the available years. The parish that I wanted was Bettws Leiki and it was in the Parish of Llandewi Brefi for the early years that I wanted. I was looking for my LLOYD'S of the Bettws Leiki Parish. I didn't find them and I am assuming that they were non-conformists even back then because I found none of their church records except perhaps as a witness to another Lloyd marriage. I will have to send to the UK for the non-conformists records for that time period. I copied information from a book that told which non-conformists were in each parish and where to obtain the records. I did write down all of the LLOYD'S on the Bishops records that I found. I will transcribe my notes and if anyone is interested in Lloyds in the 1700's and into the early 1800's in Llandewi Brefi Parish, I will be glad to see if they are in my notes. I gave up on the place names because the witting was very hard to read in some cases and I am not that familiar with the Welsh place spellings and they were difficult to try to figure out. I made attempts at many of them and could probably go to a Welsh Parish map and figure out what they were. This Lloyd family practiced the naming pattern in Wales so I am going through the 1841 census to find the rest of the WILLIAM LLOYD b. 1806 in Tregaron and his wife MARY THOMAS-LLOYD b. 1806 in Silian, family. The only children they have on the census at this time period is 11 yr. old Rachael (family name) and a 1 yr. old and a 5 month old. So I will look in the close parish's to find young children listed as servants in the 1841 census. I believe that I found our LETITICA LLOYD in the 1851 Betws Leiki as a servant at age 10. The family wasn't in Betws Leiki in the 1841 census. They were in another parish in Llandewi Brefi but until I check my notes, I can't recall what it was. By 1851, WILLIAM LLOYD was farming 6 acres in Betws Leiki. The very interesting thing that I noticed in the Llandewi Brefi Parish is there was a VERY large number of twins, boy/girl, boy/boy, girl/girl, in this parish at this time. Twins do run in families and if you are from there and have twins running in your family, this is probably the line(s) it runs through. God Bless, Janet in VA, USA Hot and humid here. I still have blurry eyes and a headache from reading the faded old hand writing on the microfilm!!!!! ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Dear Gordon, I'm sorry you're having problems accessing this week's Retrospective Images of Wales. As the feedback from David Spark, Tom Dunn and Julie Preston confirms, the webpages are working perfectly normally. I suspect your computer is retrieving last week's <www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm> webpage from its own cache memory instead of from the Web. Try again but this time click on the 'Refresh' button on your web-browser's toolbar. Dear List, I wonder if anyone can help me on this one. I have a Howel Probert father of Thomas Probert bapt. 31st March 1738 Crickadarn. I believe that Howel Probert married Anne Williams in 1727 at Crickadarn. The NLW say that they do not have any marriage records before 1734. Thomas 1738 I believe married a Hannah with children John 1766 and Thomas 1773. Does anyone have a marriage of a Thomas Probert to Hannah ? or could look up any record for me at Crickadarn. with thanks Diana

Hi Hilary or Owen, Thank you for the information in your e-mail. The Walter you speak of was my grandfather's cousin as Thomas Maddy (Walter's father) was my grandfather's father's brother. Walter was born at Llanfigan as were all his other brothers and sisters. His cousin William, my great-grandfather went to work in the mining industry in the Rhondda and my grandfather was born in Gelli, but lived most of his life in Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Thank you for the information. I had suspected that this Walter was the one that went to Sheffield. Best wishes, Susan Welham (nee Maddy) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hilary or Owen Williams" <williams.o.h@ic24.net> To: "'Powys List'" <powys-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2007 7:52 PM Subject: [POWYS] Powys: BRE: A Maddy marriage > Hi Listers, > > > > Here is a piece of information for anyone interested in the BRE Maddy > family. > > > > In Sep Q 1885, Walter Maddy married Elizabeth Davies, in Brecknock > Registration District. > > Walter seems to be the Walter found, in 1881 census, aged 19 in the > Cottage, > Llanvigan, Breconshire and living with his widowed father, Thomas and > siblings Evan, Elizabeth, Thomas, Gwen and James. > > > > My interest in the marriage lies with Elizabeth Davies. Hello Anyone related to Prices in the area can you reply please thanks Rhi
Hi Listers, Here is a piece of information for anyone interested in the BRE Maddy family. In Sep Q 1885, Walter Maddy married Elizabeth Davies, in Brecknock Registration District. Walter seems to be the Walter found, in 1881 census, aged 19 in the Cottage, Llanvigan, Breconshire and living with his widowed father, Thomas and siblings Evan, Elizabeth, Thomas, Gwen and James. My interest in the marriage lies with Elizabeth Davies. Elizabeth’s maiden name should have been Winter as she was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Winter who was from Crickadarn. Margaret died of small pox in 1858, aged 29 years, when Elizabeth was just a year old. Elizabeth was then taken in by Margaret’s older sister, Ann Winter (my Great Great Grandmother) who in 1850 married a schoolmaster called David Davies. Elizabeth Winter was brought up with her 2 cousins, Ann (my Great Grandmother) and Mary in the School house in Battle, Brecon. It is interesting that Elizabeth married under the name of her Uncle and Aunt and this prevented me for a long time from finding her marriage. I knew from Family oral history that she had married a man surnamed Maddy and that they had settled in Sheffield, where I believe their descendents still live. Hope this is of help to someone. If you want more information on the Winter connection, please contact me. Hilary Williams No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
