    3. Myra, Cwm is Valley (as is Dyffryn, though that tends to be a bigger valley) Gwy is the original Welsh version of Wye (the River Wye) Might another spelling of Cwm-Toyddwr be Cwm Deuddwr? The valley of two waters ie where two rivers join? I can imagine someone with quite a strong accent pronouncing the latter correct spelling as Toyddwr. Sorry, I don't know where it is though. 3. Hello Hilary What a bit of wonderful history! I hav`nt found THOMAS DAVIES or his wife ANN on the 1861 census either, but rumour has it that was`nt a good census so who knows. Ilooked at the deaths for 1851 - 1861 but there were to many Thomas Davies to say which one might have been him. I live in Northamptonshire so i am having to try and do my research online as best i can, so it has been a great help with you and others getting my bearings Best Wishes Dave

Any help you might be able to give me would be great ============ Dear Dave, A study of the 1851 census enumerator's description of District 8d shows that Blackboy was an area in Brecon near Mill Street just west of Brecon Castle in the parish of St John the Evangelist. Blackboy seems to have been on the north bank of the river Usk, west of the river Honddu. On the opposite bank of the Usk is the mouth of the river Tarrell. As 'Glyn Tarrell' means the valley or glen of the Tarrell, it's possible that the term Glyn Tarrell may have been applied to *any* section of the river Tarell, including the area across the Usk from Blackboy. 3. Dear Listers, I have found an address for an ancestor on the 1841 census. The family are David Edwards and his wife and children - a farmer I believe. His address is: Tynewydd, Cwm-Toyddwr, Dyffryn-Gwy. (Reg. District Rhayader & Nantmel. Civil Parish: Cwm-Toyddwr) I believe this to be in the area around the Elan Valley but can't find it on any maps. Could anyone tell me - a) Exactly where it may be? b) What does 'Cwm' mean in a place name (I've met it several times now!) 'Gwy' or any of the above!! Thank you for any help you may be able to give me, Myra

    1. [POWYS] RE [Powys] Glyn Tarre
    2. Hilary or Owen Williams
    3. Hi again Dave, I hadn’t thought of Glyn Tarrell, but that is certainly a possibility. Glyn was also within the Defynnog Parish and if you look again at the Genuki site which I gave you HYPERLINK "http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Defynnog/index.html"http://www.genuki. org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Defynnog/index.html you will see the properties within the Glyn area, which include the hamlet of Libanus and properties in Glyn Tarrell. Glyn Tarrell means the valley of the river Tarrell, which stretches from the summit at Storey Arms to the entry of the river into the Usk river at Brecon town. Apart from the hamlet of Libanus, there are other farms etc in this valley, which include those mentioned after libanus in the list of properties on the Genuki site. See also this map, HYPERLINK "http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm?mapAction=gaz&gazNam e=p&gazString=LIBANUS"http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm ?mapAction=gaz&gazName=p&gazString=LIBANUS and navigate north and south of this map to see the extent of Glyn Tarrell, with its properties. Again I have had family connections with this area, so let me know what you need information on. Hilary No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Hi Dave, Glynn Tarre is probably Glyntawe, which is a hamlet near the source of the Tawe River in South Wales. It is a part of Breconshire and see the following links for map http://www.multimap.com/maps/?#t=l&map=51.81362,-3.67908|13|4 and Genuki details, where you will see that it is a part of Defynnog Parish. Glyntawe often has the alternative name of Callwen, after the Church of that name situated in the Hamlet. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Defynnog/index.html I was born and brought up on the edge of the hamlet, so might be able to help you. What are your connections or interest in the hamlet? 3. Dave, Just in case no one else answers, though that is unlikely, there may be two options that I can think of. 1. Glyn Tarrell - this runs southwest from Brecon to Storey Arms, its basically the route of the A470 and runs through Libanus 2. Glyn Tawe - a misprint - this is the upper Swansea valley north east of Ystradgynlais. There may be more options Regards Roger M. Evans

    1. [POWYS] Help!!!
    2. Hiya all! I'm having a great struggle trying to find the Birth and Death dates of my grandfathers siblings and mother. My great grandfather Thomas Daniel Morgan lived at the cutting house just outside of Pantywaun near Dowlais Top.? He was a railway signal Man I know that he buried 2 wives and 5 children between 1920-1940.? My mother also seems to remember being told the children and second wife died from she thinks TB and also two children dying on the same day around Xmas time. I've tried locating the births and deaths but with so many years to search through and names to check I'm finding it too much. The info I know is: His first wife Laura Catherine died in Qtr 1 of 1920 and it was registered n the Merthyr Tydfil District with the reference 11a 713. I have the names of 7 children I don't know if there were any more my mother says she thinks there were only 7. I know 2 out of the 7 didn't die between 1920-1940 they were: Rhoda Douglas (my grandfather) born in 1922 died in 2002 The five who I don't have D.O.B or D.O.D for are: Annie (I have a photograph of my grandfather and Annie and from it Annie is a lot smaller so I would estimate her DOB being after 1922) Mildred Thomas Ronald Margaret Mary I have a photograph of Margaret where it has written on the back she is 5 years & 10 months in the photo and her 'current age' is 6 years 7 months. I don't know which children were from which marriage either.? I know that Rhoda was the daughter of Laura Catherine Williams my great grandafthers first wife and I know that Douglas, Annie & Margaret were the children of Elizabeth Mary(?) Evans. I was just wondering if anyone had access to any birth/death records or if anyone was kind enough to try and help me as I have no one I can ask about this family Rhiannon ________________________________________________________________________ Get a FREE AOL Email account with 2GB of storage. Just writing to the List with my queries helps to clarify my thoughts but I have had so much help and encouragement from other 'Listers' and wanted to express my sincere thanks. I have also learned so much from reading others questions and the responses to them. However, a special thanks must go to Ruth Hay who has not only encouraged me but given me positive help to find the marriage registration of my Gt Gt Grandparents at last.
