Hi Nancy, The parish registers of Aberhafesp, Tregynon and some neighbouring parishes can be searched online at : http://www.familyhistoryonline.net I see that Ursula Whittington's baptism is recorded there. The data was transcribed by members of Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society. Bryn Ellis

    3. To Powys Listmembers My name is Nancy Lauer, and I live in Ellicott City, Maryland, USA. I am researching my Colley family form Wales. They lived in Aberhafesp, Montgomeryshire, Wales. George Colley married Ursula Whittington, daughter of John Whittington and Ursula Hammer, on November 27, 1799, in Tregynon. George immigrated in 1818 to Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Five of his children accompanied him. Because Ursula didn't immigrate, she may have died. I would appreciate any information on George Colley, his parents, siblings, etc. The same for Ursula Whittington, as well as her death date. The five children who immigrated are George, Charlotta, Ursula, John, and Richard. If George and Ursula had any additional children, I'd appreciate their information. I'd also be interested in information about Aberhafesp and Tregynon and pictures of the churches where my ancestors worshipped. Thank you very much for you assistance. Nancy Lauer I descend from Charlotta Colley.

    2. Hi Alison Apparently the Ebenezer Chapel in Hay is now Bethesda Evangelical Church. I googled Ebenezer Chapel Hay & in the first item - about local information - I found this out. Then I googled Bethesda Evangelical Church Hay & the fourth item that came up was "Find a Church". There is?a good photo of the former Ebenezer Chapel, if you click on Bethesda Evangelical Church. Apparently one of the other chapels became a Roman Catholic church. (Source, MarchingTo Zion, Radnorshire Chapels. by Messrs Sinclair & Fenn) ======================================== Message Received: Sep 02 2007, 07:06 PM From: "Evans" To: powys@rootsweb.com Cc: Subject: [POWYS] Radnorshire? Place names and Locations. A few years ago I found a book written by a man that immigrated to Western Canada- He was originally from the "parish of Llanbardarn," Which he describes in the book as being near the town of "St. Arthur." His obituary says he was from Radnorshire. And the book states he was from the Welsh Borders. The stories of Wales he tells in the book start just before the wales "revival" which I take to mean a Baptist revival. The book was written in 1926. First question- "when was the welsh revival?" I think the parish he refers to is just south of Cregrina- about a mile or so- but apparently there are several areas in and out of Radnorshire with the word "Llanbardarn" in them. But I am unable to find a town named "St. Arthur" which should be nearby. He also speaks of the "Church of St. Elvel" being nearby as was "Ebenezer Baptist Chapel"- both of which should be in Llanbardarn. Again, no luck. Second Question- Where exactly is the " Llanbardarn" that he is referring to and Third Question- where is town of St. Arthur? I can't find it on an old map (1630) or in a new atlas. thanks in advance for help. 2. Hi Doug, I might be able to help with some of those questions. I know that the revival was in 1904, and an Evan Roberts was prominent in the movement. The parishes of Cregrina, Colva, Llansaintffraidd on Elvel all feature in the movements of my family. Also, should they be mentioned, were, Llanbedr Painscastle, Llandeilo lGraban and Rhulen. All on the border or thereabouts with Herefordshire. My surnames in that family are, Smith, Pugh, Evans, Price, and married with Williams and Lloyd. Can't think of anything else now though. Best regards, Maureen Rhondda

    2. Hilary or Owen Williams
    3. Thanks for that, Lyn, Just a bit of background for you and anyone else who might be interested. Llangoed Castle or Hall as it is known, is situated in the BRE village of Llyswen. Sir Clough William-Ellis thought Llangoed was built upon the site of Wales’s legendary White Palace, then the fledgling Welsh Parliament. In AD 560 Prince Iddon gave it to the See of Llandaff in expiation of his sins. Its status as an Episcopal Grange is confirmed by Pope Calixtas in 1119. After the reformation Sir Henry Williams of Old Gwernyfed, Three Cocks, BRE built a mansion on the ruined granges foundations in 1632 and it is his coat of arms that can be seen over the south portico. The Williamses did not live in it at first and it was actually inhabited by the Winter/Wynter family (my ancestors) for about 200 years. The Williams family then took back the Hall. In 1880 the Llangoed estate was won in a gambling bout by John Macnamara Esq. In 1912, Mr. Archibald Christy, the then owner commissioned Sir Clough William-Ellis to redesign the house. Llangoed was the first and largest country house commission for Sir clough William-Ellis who incorporated the original 17th century south wing with beautiful arched Jacobean porch into his design. Romantically sited above the river Wye it is of first importance as a major early 20th century country house built in Wales. Long empty, by the 1980’s and succumbing to dry rot, the owner applied unsuccessfully to demolish the house. Llangoed Hall was bought by Sir Bernard Ashley (husband of Laura Ashley of fabrics and clothing fame) who has restored it to its former glory. It is now a successful country house hotel with over 20 bedrooms and suites. I have adapted the following site for the short introduction above (http://past-caring.com/Llangoed-Hall.htm) Put "Macnamara Llangoed" into Google and a great deal of info comes up, if you are interested Similarily, if you are interested in the older history of the Hall, go into the following on line book by Wendy Garcia Winter called "The Golden Falcon" (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/index.htm) The 2 pages below, from this book, gives the history of the BRE Wynter/Winter family and their connection with Llangoed. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/ch8-06.htm from half way down the page "Fair Palace" (ie LLyswen) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pillagoda/ch8-07.htm Hope this helps. Hello All, Is anyone researching Moseley's in Radnorshire, I have for many years researched my Breconshire Moseley's and have a full history from the 1640, all from Parish Records, Wills, Census etc, No guesswork. I am also trying to trace any connection that there might be between the two families, they were farmers. Mine moved from Derbyshire to Breconshire in about 1772/4 in the Rad. family there is a record of a John Mosley born abt. 1758 Llandewi Ystradenni. I want to find out who his parents were, but I am more interested if anyone on this list has any interest in these families. Regards, Ian.
