    3. Dear Richard, Yes, I have some understanding of the system of ballots and substitutes etc. but this seems, as someone else suggested, more like a lottery. If you subscribe and then are drawn then you get paid funds from the pool of subscriptions. This would, I imagine, help to cover loss of income incurred while you served or the payment to a substitute to serve for the person drawn, especially if you couldn't afford to pay a substitute. I don't think you paid a society the fee for substitution - you paid it to the man who served in your place - he isn't likely going to do it otherwise. It doesn't say but I guess you have to subscribe before the ballot takes place. Militia lists were drawn up throughout the country for the enlistment of reservists in time of war - and article you referred to, was at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. I gather that it may be possible to avoid conscription into the military by substitution on payment of a fee - to one of a number of societies. I have googled this topic - and it seems that "Parish records include lists of men liable to serve in the militia compiled by parish constables prior to the ballot, lists of men balloted and their substitutes, and records of payment of relief to militia men and their families. Parish lists of men liable to serve in the militia (ten names or more): were for men between the ages of 18 and 50..." I suggest that the "Substitutes" would be those who could not afford to pay-off the "insurance" - and therefore their names would have appeared in the register for enlistment. 1. [POWYS] Jeremiah Brown & Elizabeth Mills - Llandinam & Trefeglwys
    2. I'm hoping someone can help with my search for information on my gt gt gt grandparents Jeremiah Brown and Elizabeth Mills. According to the census, Jeremiah was born in Llandinam in either 1807 or 1811 (depending on which census), and Elizabeth was born in Trefeglwys in about 1813. A friend recently visited the Powys Archives but was unable to find Jeremiah Brown's or Elizabeth Mills christenings at Llandinam or Trefeglwys, I wonder if anyone can suggest where else I can look? They were married at Llandinam Parish Church 24 April 1831, both were said to be "of this Parish". According to the Llandinam records they had 3 children christened there & lived at three different addresses Richard -2 Sep 1832 - Draintewion (labourer) Ann - 22 Feb 1835 - Old Barn (labourer) Elizabeth - 11 Mar 1838 - Beti Newydd (farmer) They had moved to Tredegar by 1840 where they had 5 more children. There is another Jeremiah Brown in the Llandinam records who was a farmer at Upper Gwerneirin between 1813 & 1820 - he was born in Moughtre about 1776 & married Elizabeth Ashton of Llandinam on 11 Oct 1803 in Llandinam; he had seven children christened at Llandinam between 1804 and 1820 but I can't link him to my Jeremiah. If anybody has any information on any of these families or on the properties where they lived, I would love to hear from you. Many thanks Hywel

    1. [POWYS] Jones and Price families in Disserth RAD
    2. Dr Shirley Vinall
    3. Dear list, I should be interested in contacting others researching these two families from Disserth (Radnorshire). Ebenezer Jones (c. 1794-1849) a weaver, living at Llyn (or Llwyn?), Disserth in 1841; wife Ann (nee Evans), born Disserth c. 1794; children including Edward (1820-21), Mary (born c. 1820), Martha (born and died 1822), Martha (born c. 1823), Ann (born c. 1826), Edward (born c. 1829), Ebenezer (born c. 1833), Phoebe (born c. 1834). Evan Price (born Llanyre c. 1789), farmer of Red House, Trecoed, Disserth in 1841 and 1851; wife Anne (born Llanyre c. 1800); children including Anne (born c. 1822), Jane (c. 1828), Evan (born c. 1828 or 1831), Alice (born c. 1830), Henry (born c. 1834), Eliza (born c. 1840), Penry (born c. 1842). I believe some later generations of this family had connections with Builth quarries, but as yet have no proof of this. Edward Jones (son of Ebenezer) and Jane/Janet Price (daughter of Evan), my great-great-grandparents, were married at St Mary's, Builth, in 1853, and had two children, Mary Jane (born 1854) and Henry Edward (born 1856). The family lived in Cwmbach and Brecon, and later, after Edward's death and, seemingly, after a second marriage of Jane to an as yet unknown Price, were based in Builth for many years. All information very gratefully received. Many thanks Shirley
