Pictures of: Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea (GLA); and St Stephen's and the Harp Inn, Old Radnor (RAD) Dear Listers, This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded onto my website, include: 1. The Dylan Thomas Centre in the city of Swansea, county of Glamorgan (one picture). This feature was one of the first shown on 'Images of Wales' back in December 1997. 2. The parish church of St Stephen, and the nearby 15th century Harp Inn at Old Radnor in the county of Radnorshire (six pictures). This feature was also one of the first shown on 'Images of Wales' in December 1997. As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week. 'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your own Retrospective requests. Thank you, Lyn, for these fascinating messages you send us...EE -----Original Message----- From: powys-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:powys-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lyn Nunn Sent: October 6, 2007 12:21 AM To: GLAMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com; powys@rootsweb.com Subject: [POWYS] The Cambrian 13 Jan 1816 - hurricane, travel and charity The most instructive and valuable lessons, are generally acquired in the school of experience. When travellers were compelled to pass the Wye at Chepstow, in consequence of the rebuilding the bridge, it was thought advisable, for safety, not to suffer the horse boat to pass but at such times as it would receive and deliver passengers at the slips. This regulation restricted the use of that boat to about five hours a day. It is now discovered that the above precaution was unnecessary, and the large boat now passes with the greatest safety and expedition, at all states of the tide, and without the least delay. Upwards of 250 poor families residing in the neighbourhood of Overton, Flintshire, have, during the last two months partaken of the liberal bounty of F.R. PRICE, Esq. of Bryn-y-pyis, by having served out to them, twice a week, a sufficient quantity of soup for their immediate wants, and which will be continued until the end of next March; in addition to which, the above number of indigent people received from the hospitable -------- of the magnificent donor, on Christmas-day, the annual distribution of beef, bread and money. On Friday evening, the Chester and Holyhead mail was overturned at Pant Evan, near St Asaph, by the tremendous hurricane which was then blowing. The coach and horses were precipitated into a large pool of water near the above place, and one of the horses killed. The guard and coachman were severely bruised; but none of the passengers sustained any serious injury. The present state of the Swansea Free-school for Boys will be found on our first page; and the interesting report made to the Annual Meeting on the 4th is given on our fourth page. In testimony of their approbation of his services, the subscribers voted a silver cup of the value of five guine is (guineas?) to Mr. TOMLINSON, the master(?). The numerous friends of the venerable and respected master of Ystradmeirie (?) School will peruse with pleasure the handsome acknowledgement of his worth made by some of his late pupils, and inserted in our succeeding page. Another of the unfortunate men who were severely burnt by the explosion in the colliery (noticed last week) died on Friday night. Inquests were held on the three sufferers on Saturday by Dr. J.C. COLLINS - Verdicts, accidental death. On Friday night last a daring attempt was made to enter Windsor Lodge, near Swansea, the residence of E.F.COATES, Esq. but the robbers were fired at, and it is supposed one or more were severely wounded, from the quantity of blood discovered on the premises after they had precipitately retreated. The Carnarvonshire subscriptions in honour of the Marquis of Anglesea, for the purchase of a piece of plate, have been transferred to the general fund subscribed in Anglesea, for the erection of a column. On Tuesday, in a very advanced age, at his house in Hereford, William SYMONDS, Esq. formerly an eminent banker, but for many years past retired from business - he was a man social but select in his habits, firm in his friendships, and of unostentatious integrity, which secured to him the esteem of all who had intercourse with him. Richard PENNANT, Baron Penrhyn, in the county of Louth, and of Penrhyn, near Bangor. In the death of the late Baron, Carnarvonshire sustained a serious loss - but to the great honour and praise of his countess, that loss did not prove irreparable - all the plans began or contemplated or the improvement of the estates, and the welfare of a numerous tenantry and people, were fully carried into effect by her persevering and patriotic exertions. Her loss to the neighbourhood is indeed greatly to be lamented. Lyn Nunn Brisbane Australia

Hi Pam, The Powys CC Registrar's Offices ask for a separate cheque/order/payment for each BMD Certificate requested, and they return each cheque for any not issued in the UK,etc. But those issued Certificates can be sent to you all together overseas and in UK.. I am not sure what they actually need from you cash-wise in Sterling at £7 per Certificate, and if Credit Cards are ok. I can get some more Info from the Registrar in Newtown, Powys, if you need it? I seem to remember this came up soon after the change at the site and users of older versions of Internet Explorer were able to save but not current versions. With Firefox you can save most "protected" images quite easily (these are used on may site and have a Javascript? generated text that appears when you right click). Quite simple Display the page with the image Click Tools, Page Info Select Media tab Scroll down the addresses until the image appears in the Media preview area Right click and select copy Go to a new window or tab and paste the address The image should appear now and you just use normal right click to save it. Hi John and Dave, I agree with John, I haven't been able to save an image either, and I am on XP. I find the whole site much less user friendly, than the old site!! Could it be because I'm a stick in the mud with my XP and IE6? ================ Dear Dave, You must have a magic touch! Over the past few days I've tried various methods of saving Old-Maps images and almost all of them have been thwarted. I'm using Windows XP and have tried both Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer 7.0, neither of which overcomes the Old-Maps defence mechanisms. Any attempt to use my 'right-click' menu to save the image triggers a copyright warning, both in IE7 and in Firefox, telling me the right click function has been disabled (I've sent you a screen image attachment, off list). Any attempt to print a map directly from IE7 or Firefox's drop-down File menu produces a print of the watermark, but not the overlying map. Using the 'Prt Scr' (print screen) key on the keyboard should place an image of the entire current screen display into Windows' clipboard, which can then be pasted into a graphics program. On the Old-Maps website, this appears to work with Firefox but not with IE7. If any Lister can explain an effective (and legitimate!) way of overcoming Old-Maps' defences perhaps they would let me know. Hi Dennis Sorry, I really have no idea what I have - I photocopied pages that had items of interest to me when I was in Swansea earlier this year. As I love newspapers as a source I am transcribing articles that I think may be of interest to someone on the pages as I have time. There are probably another 10 pages to go. You will just have to wait and see. :) Regards Lyn In Oz. -----Original Message----- From: powys-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:powys-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of DCLEATOND@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, 3 October 2007 8:23 AM To: powys@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [POWYS] Births, Marriages The Cambrian 13 Jan 1816 Many thanks for all this old Cambrian data Lyn, I have read them with much interest locally.
