Pictures of: Cefn Cul in the Brecon Beacons National Park (BRE); and Llangors Lake (BRE) Dear Listers, This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded onto my website, include: 1. A winter shot of Cefn Cul ridge in the Brecon Beacons National Park in the county of Breconshire (one picture). This was one of the first features shown on 'Images of Wales' back in November 1997. It has never before been selected as a Retrospective. 2. The ancient Llangors Lake, also in the Brecon Beacons National Park (seven pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in July 1998. As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week. 'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your own Retrospective requests. Sorry Martin. I have got a Sarah Humphreys, but she was born in 1839 to Matthew Humphreys and Margaret Woosnam. She is sister of Elizabeth who was discussed recently, and was born in Llandinam. Yours. Ann. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Answers - Get better answers from someone who knows. Tryit now.
Dear All Seeing the discussion about Humphreys, I was wondering whether anyone could help me in finding out more about my gx2 grandmother Sarah Humphreys, details as below so far as I’ve researched so far. The census returns are of limited help according to them she was born: 1851 NK, 1861 Llanllylyar, 1871 Montgomery, Newtown, 1881 Montgomeryshire. So I have guessed at Llanllwchaearn, but haven’t found a baptism there – so need to re-consider. She did marry my gx2 grandfather Thomas Pugh of Llandyssil/Llandysul and I have found a possible marriage at Aberhafesp on 30 Sep 1835 which is adjacent to Llanllwchaearn parish. Subsequently the couple seemed to have moved to Shropshire and I’ve found them in Lydbury North and later Bishop’s Castle. I give a table below of my information about Sarah, her husband Thomas Pugh and their family and would be grateful for any help. On Tuesday, the 4th inst. the members of the Brecon Cymreigyddon, together with several friends of the Society, assembled at the White Lion, to celebrate their fifth anniversary, and had the gratification of seeing the accomplishment of one object which had originated among themselves, and which had for some time occupied their attention, as their President, the Rev. Thomas PRICE, did, on that day, present to the Society a complete copy of the translation of the New Testament into the Breton language, which had just been printed in France under directions of the Bible Society. In the course of the evening the several prizes of the Society were adjudged - that for the best Welsh verses upon the Battle of Navarin, was awarded to GLANMEHASCYN, the veteran bard, who, from having been himself once engaged in similar scenes, was well calculated to describe the dreadful conflict. - The reward for the best Welsh speech, on the benefits which have accrued to Great Britain during the illustrious reign of the House of Brunswick, was given to Mr. David GEORGE. The meeting was addressed in the Ancient British by the Secretary, Mr. Thomas JONES, and several others, and during the evening Mr. JONES, the Society's Harper, together with one of his pupils, played several national airs upon the triple harp. The Agricultural Meeting for the three Commots, Carmarthenshire, was held on the 11th instant, at the town of Kidwelly. The ploughing match took place in a field, on the farm of Middlescomb, near that town. There were 26 ploughs produced. The first prize was awarded to John WILLIAMS, of Pistill, Llandeveylog; the second to John DAVIES, Gellygatrog, Llangendeirne; the third to David DAVIES, Middlescomb; the fourth to William FRANCIS, of Blaeurbydw, Llandeveylog; and fifth to J. JONES, of Coed, Llaudeveylog. The ploughing was excellent, and the exhibitions very good. About forty gentlemen sat down to a sumptuous dinner at the Pelican Inn, R.J. NEVILLE, Esq. in the chair. Swansea, Friday, March, 14. The insertion of an Extraordinary Death at Carmarthen would, we fear, engender hostile feelings towards us; we cannot, therefore, admit it into our columns. Thomas LEYSON, Esq. of Ystrad, near Swansea, has been appointed one of his Majestys Deputy Lieutenants for the county of Glamorgan. We are authorised to state that the Lord HOTHAM, M.P. for Leominster, and Col. WOOD, M.P. for Breconshire, did not vote on Lord John RUSSELLs motion for the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts. Three men strongly suspected of being concerned in the robbery of the Swansea Bank, were apprehended in he early part of this week at Bath, by the exertions of THORNTON, a Police Officer from this town, having in their possession flash notes, purporting to be of the value of £8000, and a pocket book, in which were written several suspicious memorandums. They were, however, discharged by the Mayor, although THORNTON requested time to procure evidence to their identity. One of them, named HAWKINS answered exactly the description of one of the fellows who was at the Passage on the morning after the robbery. On Monday last Richard EDWARD, alias Dick VAWR, William WILLIAMS, alias Billo CLIIUK, Rees GRIFFITH, and William HARRY, were fully committed to prison, by L.W. DILLWYN, Esq. for stealing a large number of geese and ducks from Mr. W. GRIFFITHS, of Penderry, and from Mrs. BEVAN, of Pantlasse. Two of their accomplices have absconded, During the last winter, scarcely a farmer in the neighbourhood escaped being plundered of his poultry by this daring gang. Lyn Nunn Brisbane Australia

On Sunday last, at his house in Spring Garden-terrace, London, Charles BICKNELL, Esq. in his 77th year of his age. He held for upwards of thirty years the office of Solicitor of the Army and Navy. Here's some more on the Mantle family... My ancestor Evan Mantle was born in Radnorshire c1809. The actual parish of birth varies on each census but an Evan Mantle was baptised at Llananno in 1809. However, I'm aware that some parish records (eg for St Harmon) are missing so I've been unable to check the whole of the County. Evan Mantle raised a large family at Newchapel, Hengynwydd (Llandinam), near Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire and had a number of wives (due to various illnesses). Evan died in 1887 and is buried at Newchapel Baptist Chapel. Kevin, our ancestor's final address was, indeed, Caeglas which was situated near the Van Lead Mines (Y Fan). However, Evan spent nearly all his life on the south side of the Severn at Newchapel working as a lead miner and labourer. A number of Evan's sons migrated to the Rhondda (Ferndale and Ton Pentre) in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and worked in coal mining. One of them was my ancestor William Mantle (1840-1901) who married Sarah Lawrence (1843-1815) of Cwmdauddwr. They lived at Tylwch, Radnorshire from around 1870 to 1883. His first daughter, Sarah Jane (1872-1903), was born at Cwmbelan, Montgomeryshire (2 miles north of Tylwch). William Mantle once worked on the Mid Wales railway as a platelayer. His father, Evan, also worked in a similar capacity at one stage. Evan Mantle may well be connected to the Llanbadarn Fynydd Mantle family if I'm able to trace the family back to the 1700s. Graham, Tricia and Shirley - please contact me off list if you'd like to. Kevin - good to hear from you again. My efforts to fully document the life of our mutual ancestor, Evan Mantle, continue. Evan's epitaph reads: In Affectionate Memory of Evan Mantle, Late of Topypant, Llandinam who died December 17th 1887 Aged 79 years. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord" I'm sure Evan would be proud to know that he now has descendants in every corner of the world! Thanks for reading. Hi Mantle Folks, There was a Billy Mantle and his wife living at Newbridge-on-Wye in WW2 days, who served in the RAF recovery team for crashed RAF aircraft, and he was related to the Llanbadarn Fynedd/ Llananno Mantles I am told by Richard Meredith. I was there as a schoolboy and I remember his visits with a special RAF aircraft transporter lorry plus various crashed aircraft parked overnight by our the old school at times. Best Wishes, Dennis Cleaton RAD, Powys.

Here's some more info on the Holmes, Mantles and related families. My earliest ancestor was John Holmes from Yorkshire who ran a woolen mill in Beriew - late c18th. In the parish registers a John Holmes married Margaret Blayney in 1789 at Berriew. Gwynne's Marriage Index shows Margaret BLAYNEY, married (by banns) 17 October 1789 at Berriew, John HOLMES. His son, Richard Holmes, was Mayor of Llanidloes 1849 and owned the Cwmbelan wool factory, Llanidloes (SN 948 816)In C. E. Vaughan Owen 'An Arwystli Notebok', p.36 in 1852 one of the founding Directors of the Llanidloes-Newtown line was Alderman Richard Holmes [the line's contractor was David Davies of Llandinam]. Edith Holmes' g-grandmother was Hannah Titley of Glangynwydd (alias Titley's and Penpompren) Mill. Has anyone got an interest? Richard's g-grand-daughter Edith Holmes married David Thomas Mantle of Llandinam. His Grandfather was Evan Mantle of Cae Glas. Anyone encountered the Mantle's particularly Evan? David's mother was Jane Gravenor of Llandinam (father was Thomas). At a later stage, a Mantle married a Holmes of Llanidloes. Is anyone else looking out for the Holmes? Two were mayors of Llanidloes, and had mill and publican interests. They later owned Pen-yr-allt on the outskirts of Llanidloes. The earliest I can go is a Holmes coming from Yorkshire in the 1780s who married Margaret Blayey - I have not been able to connect her with the Blayney's of Greygynog. I suspect there is as he was wealthy. Hi Graham and others I also have Mantle's in my ancestry. John Mantle (born 1829/30 Radnorshire) who married Mary (Jones?) (born 1819/20 Montgomeryshire). Their four children (Sarah, Jane, Anna, John) were all born in Bettws-y-Crwyn in Shropshire in the 1860s. I'm descended from Jane who married James Henry Bayliss. John could possibly be a brother of the Mary you mention below ? Does this John Mantle sound familiar to anyone ?
