Yes there was a house called 'Pied House' in the township of Vaynor Isaf in the parish of Berriew. This is the area immediately south-west of the village but Idon't know where the house actually was or if it exists today. Bryn Ellis

Gordon - Are you attempting to use your browser's own built-in zoom function? That's the only thing I can think of that would trigger the warning notice you've received. Otherwise I'm afraid I don't understand the cause of problems you're experiencing. John Hokins - Using the zoom bar on the left only displays a small area of the image, contained within the rectangular frame. Using the 'Enlarge Map' icon (the bottom of the four icons on the right tab) opens the full sized image in a completely new browser window, which you can resize (maximise) to fill your entire screen. Unless you have a very large monitor, the image will overflow the screen, but you can use your browser's horizontal and vertical scroll bars to examine the entire image. This is a much more satisfactory method than using the 'panning' arrows located round the small rectangular frame. By default I use the Microsoft IE7 browser, but I've just repeated the exercise using Firefox 2 without any difficulty. The only difference is that the enlarged map opened in a new browser *tab* rather than in a completely new browser window, but the result is just as good. 3. Thank you John (Hopkins), Yes, I tried the scale on the left, and it did do a little enlargement, but nothing like as much as I remember it used to be possible, or enough to be able to read more than a few of the more uncluttered words The enlargement used to be so great that it was necessary to scroll about to find the part required. Oh well! Keep trying. 1. [POWYS] MGY - MANTLE & CHAPMAN FAMILIES
    2. Derek Savage
    3. Evan MANTLE, a lead miner and labourer, raised a large family at Newchapel near Llanidloes in the mid nineteenth century. Most of his children migrated south to the Glamorganshire coalfield and although I've had success tracking the men (the less common surname helps!), I'm still trying to find contacts for his daughters. It appears that Mary MANTLE, born c1837, married a David CHAPMAN, born Llanidloes c1831, in the Newtown Registration District in 1858. Their first child, David CHAPMAN was born in the Newtown District in 1859. In 1861 the family were at Park Street, Newtown. They then lived at Gorn, near Newchapel in 1871 and at Angel Yard, Great Oak Street, Llanidloes in 1881. Like his father in law, David CHAPMAN was also a lead miner and labourer. Later, David began working in the Rhondda coalfield. In fact, he was already in Glamorganshire in 1881 leaving his family back home in Montgomeryshire. At this time, David was boarding with John JERMAN, 50, born Llandinam, at 18 Pleasant View, Ton Pentre. David CHAPMAN (Junior) was also in the Rhondda at 54, Gelli Road, Ton Pentre lodging with his uncle Richard MANTLE, born Newchapel 1847. By 1891, Mary CHAPMAN had moved down to join her husband David (and eldest son) and the whole family resided at 16 Whitefield Street, Ton Pentre, Rhondda. The children of David and Mary CHAPMAN, all born MGY were: David, born 1859 Elizabeth, born c1860 Mary, born c1863 Evan, born c1865 at Tylwch Sarah, born c1867 John, born c1868 Margaret, born c1873 William, born 1881 By 1901, it appears that both parents had died but eldest son David CHAPMAN lived at Whitefield Street with some of his brothers and sisters. Are there descendants out there somewhere? I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who is descended from the above CHAPMAN AND MANTLE families or who can provide further information, please. Thanks.

He died the 11th of February 1860, in the 69th year of his age. Also of THOMAS MOORE Esqr. of OLD HALL, who died June 8th 1872 Aged 75. Is that a coincidence? Dolau is a village in the parish of Llanfihangel Rhydithon, Radnorshire, and RSD is an abbreviation of Rural Sanitary District which refers to a local government administrative area - see http://vision.edina.ac.uk/types/status_page.jsp?unit_status=RSD There is a photo of Dolau Baptist Chapel in the Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection on my website - http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/churches/ Kind regards, John -------------------- John Ball, Godre'r Graig, near Swansea, Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2005.plus.com John's Homepage: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/ Images of Wales: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/ Welsh Family History Archive: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/wales/ GENUKI Breconshire Maintainer: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/ Joint Administrator - Powys (& BRE/MGY/RAD) RootsWeb mailing lists
