    3. Julie, Thanks for the info. Perhaps that is my Michael Claven even though the date is a little off. I'll have to search some LDS church registers in Borris for a marriage to Mary. I find Mary Claven in both the 1851 and 1861 census in Halifax, Yorkshire and she is still listed as married. I wonder where he was from 1846 to 1861? Since she didn't have any more daughters after leaving Wales, he couldn't have been too close! I have a feeling I won't be able to trace these two back and I really wanted to find my Irish roots. Thanks again for your help. Dot Dot, A quick search of the IGI ( www.familysearch.org ) for your Michael CLAVEN yielded the following information. (Unfortunately, the three Mary HALLIGAN possibilities showed different spouse names -- maybe worth following up if you think she may have remarried -- was she shown as a widow in 1851?) This christening information was submitted by a patron of the LDS church so not taken from actual church records, presumably -- at least, be sure to corroborate this information using other records but this can be a 'pointer' to work from: Michael CLAVEN Male Christening: 09 APR 1811 Borris, Carlow, Ireland Parents: James CLAVEN & Mary DORAN Source: LDS Film No. 1395951 - Patron Ordinance Submission Sheets, 1969-1991 You may be able to contact the original submitter and compare notes if you order the film from the nearest LDS Family History Center. As for christening their children in the Church of England in Wales, that would've been their only choice, other than nonconformist chapels (i.e., Baptist, Methodist, Congregationalist) as there were no Catholic churches in that area at that time. This doesn't mean they weren't Catholic -- only that they would rather christen their children by some means than not christen them at all, I think. Kind regards, Julie Preston juliefpreston@sbcglobal.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dot Schulz" <dschulz@snet.net> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 26, 2007 1:41 PM Subject: Re: [POWYS] MGY-CLAVEN-HALLIGAN Bryn, Thank you for the website info. I signed up and did a search but just came up with their children's christenings. Perhaps they married in Ireland before coming to Wales. Maybe you know, is the Church of Wales, Parish Church of Llandysilio a church of England? Please excuse my ignorance of Ireland and Wales, but if the church is not Catholic does that necessarily mean that Michael and Mary came from the North of Ireland? Dot "Dot Schulz" <dschulz@snet.net> asked I'm trying to find marriage information and parents of my GG Grandparents Michael Claven (born abt 1814)and Mary Halligan (born abt 1815); both born in Ireland (county ?). They are found in the 1841 Census living in Domgay, Montgomeryshire, Wales with twin daughters born in 1840 - Ann and Mary. I have found the twin's birth records in LDS film no. 0104794 Item 3, Church in Wales, Parish Church of Llandysilio (Montgomeryshire). They also had daughters in 1842, 1844, and 1846. After that Michael disappears and Mary and daughters appear in the 1851 census in Northowram, Yorkshire. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Dot You can confirm the baptisms of those children online at http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ There you will find the baptism, marriage and burial records of many Montgomery parishes. Bryn Ellis

    1. [POWYS] Denial of Access at Powys Archives
    2. Hi Listers I am writing to ask whether any of you have had a similar experience to a friend of mine, of Welsh descent, in a recent visit to the Powys County Archives Office.? My friend lives abroad but is an avid & experienced researcher, spending most of his?time when?visiting the UK in Archives Offices. This month he had been working on some Powys schools records for several days when there was a change of archivist on duty, and?the new arrival?denied him access to the documents, in spite of the fact that they are listed on the Archives Network Wales site as having no restrictions regarding access. As you can imagine, he was not pleased, having come several thousand miles! Such arbitrary denials?do not happen at the NLW or the National Archives in Kew, where requests are dealt with efficiently and without comment regarding the content of the documents. I am not sure why they should occur at the CAO, apparently at the whim of the person on duty. If anyone has had a similar experience, please can you get in touch with me - off-list if more appropriate. Thank you. 3. Dot, Llandysilio was/is Church of England [Church in Wales after 1920]. I don't think that you can reach any conclusions from this. There were also many Church of England people in southern Ireland, and I also believe that some went to the village church in this country although they had been brought up Catholic in Ireland - it was probably at that time the only church in the area! I noted that Michael was a hawker/pedlar so they could have lived elsewhere in England/Wales before coming here? It could have perhaps a whistle or watch attached to it. The buttons are fairly large and made of metal. There are two attached to lapels on each side of his shounders. 1. [POWYS] New lister - WILSON/HAYCOCK
    2. The Wilsons
    3. Hi List I am new to these two lists as I have started tracing my husband's family tree. I am looking for information on the following: Robert WILSON b 1836/37 Ruabon m Elizabeth HAYCOCK b 1843/44 They married at United Presbyterian Church, Everton, Liverpool, 16 May 1866 They had nine children born, Liverpool, Oswestry and Manchester. Robert's father was ROBERT WILSON, shepherd born Scotland and his mother was Jone, Jean or Jane (varies with each census). Elizabeth's father was CHARLES HAYCOCK born Oswestry. Looking at the Clwyd archives from about 3/4 years ago someone else seemed to be interested in the WILSON family, but I have had no reply to my e-mail. I am trying to find the baptisms for Elizabeth and Robert. Any information help much appreciated. Kathleen Wilson Isle of Man

Perhaps you would forward it to Wendy or LOEW (I don't recall having seen it mentioned before) in case other listowners wish to pass it on.
