To List Members: Ursula Whittington was baptized in Aberhafesp, Montgomeryshire, Wales on July 15, 1778. She was the daughter of John Whittington and Ursula Hamer. She married George Colley on November 27, 1799 in Tregynon. In 1818, George Colley emigrated to the US with his five children. Nothing is mentioned of Ursula. I am trying to find out if she died prior to the family's emigration or if, perhaps, she emigrated with them. I have located a death record for an Ursula Colley, DOD 11 March 1821, aged 43 in Shrewsbury, St. Chad, Anglican County. This would be the correct age for my Ursula. I'm trying to determine if this is her. Any thoughts from the list members as to why she would be in Shrewsbury? All help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and Happy New Year. Nancy
Hi all seasons greetings, just been catching up with old mail and noticed the reply to someone trying to purchase a certificate from abroad, does anyone realise how expensive it is to get a bank to draft a cheque for seven pounds in sterling from abroad ? ,the answer is obviously not. I would suggest that no one in their right mind would try,as the expense will, out cost the small amount. If you wish to purchase a certificate listed via its BMD reference and the local register office does accept credit cards, then do not waste you money in giving them the business.Purchase it direct from the General Register Office who do accept credit cards .http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ as was mentioned in the last email regarding this issue. After you have purchased it ,please email the local council that is responsible for the registry office concerned. And complain preferably to the local councillors and ask them as to why they are not doing there civic duty in making sure that their local registry office is available to all and why it will lose revenue due to its obvious current financial mismanagement.I did the same to Herefordshire and they now accept credit cards. All councils in the UK take payment for everything from parking tickets to council tax via credit cards so it not difficult for any registry office to do the same in this day and age. On a recent visit to Wales I took the opportunity to visit the Llandrindod Archive Office to look at the parish records for Aberedw and I suspect that made an error in transcribing an entry. I wonder if any lister is going to be in the office and can check an entry for me. I have the exact date and details. If anyone can do this for me would they please contact me off list. Thank you in anticipation. Norman

I am not sure what all the Masonic offspring are in the British Isle, but in the United States, the Order of Buffaloes had NOTHING to do with the Masonic fraternity, other than the fact that the Buffaloes used some of the same parts of the rituals which they copied from the Masons. The Buffaloes lodges have became extinct in the US, in the early 1800's. She has had in her possession for many years an old sepia toned photograph of a man dressed in the Masonic regalia of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes and has always wondered who he was. Apparently he had a shop in the Struet in Brecon and was related to her grandmother. Her grandmother was Elizabeth JAMES, who was born in 1863 at Eskir(fechan), Crickadarn, Brecs.. According to Free BMD Elizabeth married William WILLIAMS, who was born at Henllwynonfach, Llandefalle, Brecs. circa 1860, in the March quarter of 1891 in Brecknock. The man in the picture could be anything from 50 to 70 or more years of age. His attire gives no real clue as to when the picture was taken, it could be anywhere from about the mid 1890's to the 1930's. Does any lister have any knowledge about the ROA Buffaloes in Brecon? Hi Listers, I wonder if I could pick your brains yet again, please. I bought from the National Library of Wales copies of court documents relating to the case when Thomas HAMMOND(s) was had up in court in 1768 for beating up Lucy ASHLEY, wife of John. The offence was apparently in Berriew, and I'm a little puzzled at what the documents actually are. One is a fragment of the husband's complaint against Thomas, one seems to be part of a warrant for Thomas to turn up at court, and the only complete document reads: "The Jurors for our Lord the King upon their Oath present that Thomas Hammond / late of the Parish of Berriew in the said County husbandman on the ninth day of June in the / eighth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third King of Great Britain / with force and arms at the parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid in and upon one / Lucy Ashley the wife of John Ashley Labourer in the peace of God and our said Lord / the King then and there being did make an Assault and her the said Lucy / then and there did beat wound and ill treat her so that her life was in great danger and / other injuries to the said Lucy then and there did to the great damage of the / said Lucy and against the peace of our said Lord the King / his Crown and dignity. Griffiths [Signature] The Deft app[eared] & plead Not Guilty." Is this the indictment - if so why are the jurors making it, rather than the prosecutor, or is it a 'guilty' verdict? If it's a verdict, I'm a little puzzled as to why the note at the bottom says that Thomas turned up at court and pleaded not guilty. Thomas married at Berriew 6 months later which is another reason why I'm not sure if this was a verdict - if he was found guilty he seems to have got off quite lightly for what seems to have been a very violent attack. Any ideas or comments would be very welcome, Regards, Ellie

Hi Tom My suggestion would be to contact Dr. John Davies, who gave a very interesting talk on Owain Glyndwr in October at the annual meeting of the Powys Family History Society. He obviously knows a lot about the blood-lines of the Welsh royal families. I am sure if you contact the appropriate person in the PFHS they will let you know how to contact him. ..............................David ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Evans" <tomevans11@yahoo.com> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 12:51 AM Subject: [POWYS] Llewelyn Aurdorchog > I am attempting to determine how Llewelyn > Aurdorchog, Lord of Yale, fits into the family tree of > Llewelyn the Great.
