Joy ----- Original Message ----- From: DCLEATOND@aol.com To: powys@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, January 21, 2008 5:01 PM Subject: Re: [POWYS] New Member Elan Village Hi Joy, My wife's Price family lived at the Gro Farm in the Elan Valley before the Dams were built, and had to leave then to Rhayader. There is much written about that era, and a Visitor Centre is now by the old school and first Dam area, with lots of books and other things to buy and see re the history there. Our local Powys FHS man and Cronicl Editor Lloyd Lewis in Rhayader can also help you in this I think, as he gave us a very good talk on the Elan Valley recently. The school records are lost I think, but Powys Archives here in Llandrindod Wells will have some records, and some of these are online for Schools, etc. Go to Internet:http://archives.powys.gov.uk and/or Email _archives@powys.gov.uk_ (mailto:archives@powys.gov.uk) for more info. A good small book to read is "The Elan Valley Railway" by Kidner ?? , with lots of history and many photo's of the early days there, and the Dams, School, and Village buildings, but many early ones were just wooden huts!!! I will send you the book details asap, as my copy is not to hand today. A GOLDBY family of engineers I know also went to NZ like yours and Lloyd Lewis has their history too. 1. [POWYS] EVANS Abergethy/Abermele???
    2. Hi, resubbing to this list after several years away. My great grandfather was Evan EVANS b c1844 in Newtown, Montgomeryshire who moved to Birmingham prior to 1871 when he is recorded on the census there. On censuses he variously gave his birth place as Newtown or Abethgethy, Montgomeryshire. He was a miller as was his father, another Evan EVANS. I have now found his brother David EVANS b c1848 Newtown Montgomeryshire, a baker. He also moved to Birmingham. He gives his birthplace as Newtown, however on one census he says Abermele. I really need to know the place of birth in order to get the birth certificate for Evan EVANS, there are quite a lot to choose from! Enquiries on this list in the past have drawn a blank as to where Abergethy was situated, however I'm asking again now as I have the additional clue of Abermele. Hoping someone somewhere might have half a clue. This is my biggest brick wall. Thank you Jas in Devon

Are there any photos? =================== Dear Joy If you perform a Google search using the key words 'Elan Village School' you'll find links to a profusely illustrated web feature on the 'Elan Valley Dams' at http://history.powys.org.uk/history/rhayader/elanmenu.html The feature is part of the excellent Powys Digital History Project. On the opening page, follow the link to 'The Elan Village' where you'll find seven webpages on the history of the village. The many photos include one of the temporary wooden school and its staff in 1898 (on page 5). I quote: ------------- The original village school in the valley of Nantgwyllt was to be among many other buildings abandoned and demolished with the coming of the waterworks to the Elan Valley. This was to be temporarily replaced by a wooden schoolhouse provided in 1895 by Birmingham Corporation within the navvies village, then later by a stone-built school below Caban Coch dam at the end of the project. The school was for children up to the age of 11, after which they were legally able to work. ------------- I strongly recommend that your explore the entire 'Elan Valley Dams' feature, as the village school is mentioned on other pages, too.
