If so, I would be pleased to hear from you. ====================== Dear Alison, Some years ago, I was involved in research into a GEORGE family that (in 1851) farmed at Craft-yr-onnen, Llananno, RAD. The family was headed by John GEORGE born circa 1815 in Llananno, and Margaret ?, born circa 1820 in Llangurig, MGY. They had at least eight children: Margaret George 1840 - John George 1843 - Thomas George 1844 - Mary George 1849 - Richard George 1850 - Sarah George 1851 - Elizabeth George 1852 - Jane George 1856-1937 - moved to Llanfihangel Cwmdu, BRE; m. 1880, Crickhowell, BRE, to William George JONES (1854-1934); emigrated to Kansas, USA, in 1884. In 1851, the above GEORGE family's immediate neighbours, farming at Brynrhyg, was another GEORGE family, headed by Thomas GEORGE, also born circa 1815 in Llananno - possibly John's brother. A photographic exploration of the ancient and derelict parish church at Baglan, near Port Talbot, in the county of Glamorgan (thirteen pictures). 3. Dear Listers, Powys List member Helen Whyte in Canada has drawn my attention to the following news item, which should be of interest to everyone: ------------------------- Scotland Online acquires FindMyPast.com Two major organizations in the UK have issued an announcement of an acquisition. Scotland Online has been known in genealogy circles for its 'ScotlandsPeople' service. 'FindMyPast.com' (formerly known as '1837online.com') has been a major online genealogy company in England. Now 'Scotland Online' has acquired 'FindMyPast.com' (see http://tinyurl.com/3bh9kn). The merger will see Scotland Online's current online genealogy service, ScotlandsPeople, working closely with Findmypast.com to create a dynamic family history resource to serve millions of family history enthusiasts worldwide. Scotland Online recently won the tender for the 1911 England and Wales census records, which will be available during 2009. -------------------------- Kind regards, John -------------------- John Ball, Godre'r Graig, near Swansea, Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2005.plus.com John's Homepage: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/ Images of Wales: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/ Welsh Family History Archive: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/wales/ GENUKI Breconshire Maintainer: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/ Joint Administrator - Powys (& BRE/MGY/RAD) RootsWeb mailing lists

    3. Jas, There are two places adjacent to one another that come to mind. The first is Aberbechan that lies close to where the River Bechan flows into the River Severn. Within half a mile is the hamlet of Abermule on the main Mid-Wales railway line (well know for the rail crash that took place near there in the 1930's). Both are roughly three miles east of Newtown. Welsh names are so often misspelt by monoglot English scribes that it makes searches that much more difficult. I have on occasions followed the route of a census taker on a detailed map of Welsh farms and it is astonishing what gets written. In this context I have to commend the Ordnance Survey people who do a stirling job in maintaining the authenticity of Welsh names. Good luck with your searches. Alun Evans

On the opening page, follow the link to 'The Elan Village' where you'll find seven webpages on the history of the village. The many photos include one of the temporary wooden school and its staff in 1898 (on page 5). I quote: ------------- The original village school in the valley of Nantgwyllt was to be among many other buildings abandoned and demolished with the coming of the waterworks to the Elan Valley. This was to be temporarily replaced by a wooden schoolhouse provided in 1895 by Birmingham Corporation within the navvies village, then later by a stone-built school below Caban Coch dam at the end of the project. The school was for children up to the age of 11, after which they were legally able to work. ------------- I strongly recommend that your explore the entire 'Elan Valley Dams' feature, as the village school is mentioned on other pages, too.
