Hello, I am back into working on my family history which I have neglected for the past 6 years or so. To go one more step back in my Tustian line I'm looking for a Richard Tustian and who his parents were and siblings. He would have been born about 1815. He married a Jane (Hargest) and in the 1851 census it shows Richard as a 36 year old tailor and Jane as a 34 year old dressmaker at 1 Mount Street, St. Mary's, Brecknock, Wales. Living with 5 of their children. Can someone tell me how I'm to find his birth information and marriage information? Thank you so much, Lillian Francis-Thurston Researching: Tustian, Hargest, Probert, Slade, Henly, Loder, Randall, Wicks, Bolter, Dalby, Sims, Rawlings, Francis, Mitchell, Glidden, Sexton, Giles, Pugh, Stockman, --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Hi Neil, It seems that many larger MGY and other farms had quite small areas set aside for their workers to live on in a smaller dwelling, and as part-time farmers with another job, such as a roadman in 1901, etc. My MGY relatives were mostly like this in 1841, and three brothers went to the USA by 1848. Hi Listers I am trying to research landownership in the Victorian period in the rural parishes of Trefeglwys and Llangurig. I have used the Returns of Owners of Land 1873 but the location of land owned is not specific enough for my purposes. Specifically, the locations I am interested in are the following:locations close to Llanidloes- A) Cwm Biga Bach (aka CwmBiga Uchaf) Civil Parish of Trefeglwys and its environs. Map coordinates: 285185, 289570 12 acres. Almost certainly this is rented land. but is adjacent to much bigger properties, one of 1100 acres and one of 826 acres. B) Llyndu - Civil Parish of Llangurig and its environs . Map coordinates: 286772, 283245 C) Croes Isaf - Hamlet or Tything of Ystradynod , Llanidloes Map Coordinates: 289364,288703 I wonder if anybody has done any specific research into landownership in this area. Is the area part of a bigger estate, for example? Any help in this matter would be gratefully received. Thank you Neil Thompson

Hi Neil ? One of the best means of tracking down land owners very specifically is to check the list of Tithe apportionments - a reference document compiled at the time the tithe map was drawn up.? I believe that the one for Trefeglwys dates from 1848 & in it you should be able to find the names of owners & occupiers of all the properties in the parish. You?will probably?need to go to the NLW or TNA or the Powys CAO to find Tithe apportionments, and you may need to consult a reference book by Kain & Oliver (The Tithe Maps of England & Wales) which should lead you to the right document. Hope this helps. Pictures of: Crown Inn, Briton Ferry (GLA); and Graves & Tombstones (various locations) Dear Listers, I have just uploaded this week's Retrospectives onto my website. They include: 1. A photograph of the Crown Inn public house on the main road between Briton Ferry and Neath in the county of Glamorgan (one picture). This was one of the very first 'Images of Wales' features, back in November 1997. 2. Photographs of a selection of interesting tombstones in church and chapel graveyards in the counties of Breconshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan, and Pembrokeshire (eight pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in July 1998. As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week. 'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your own Retrospective requests. Hi List, I am trying to track MORGAN REES, who married an ELIZABETH JENKINS in 1844 at Tabor Chapel in the district of Crichowell on 10th July 1844. he is down as a minor/batchelor occupation Pudler in the Residence it looks like Brynmawr, but I 'm not sure of that in the parish of Lanelly in the county of Brecon. His father is down as THOMAS REES, again I cannot read his profession. Elizabeth is down as a Minor/Spinster from Nanty Glo in the parish of Aberystruth in the county of Monmouth. Her father is WILLIAM JENKINS, occupation Collier. They have a son THOMAS REES born 19th July 1843! Born in Nanty Glo and registered in Abergavenny. Father MORGAN REES Occupation Pudler, mother ELIZABETH REES formerly JENKINS. I have been unable to trace these three on the 1841,1851 and 1861, census'. Thomas crops up again on the 1871 census living as a lodger with his future wife's family. Has anyone any ideas where they might have disappeared to. Any help would be gratefully received. Many Thanks. Pauline
Hello Camilla I too have Jewish ancestry and there has been a lot of work done in the Jewish community on this. If you will spare me a day or so I'll endeavour to look up my records and point you in the right direction, I have links saved somewhere directly to the records. In the meanwhile email me at Justine@innovativefoods.co.nz with the names and I'll have a quick look in my books. Cheers Justine Justine Orme Sch. L.H.K. Hons. I'd be really interested to know if she was - how would one be able to find out (eg. do synagogues keep genealogical records, and if so, how does one get access to these)? She came from the Portsmouth area, but I'm only on this mailing list, and thought someone here might be able to give me some tips. Thanks so much! Camilla

Thanks John. I have tried te website but although I know some of them are there I still need to know whether they have services and what times. I would also like to find out if any of them are charismatic chapels so that I may avoid them. Thanks for your help, Sue in Suffolk

Sue Welham <sue.cartref@virgin.net> wrote: I did view a few of the websites containing Chapels but there wasn't much about whether they still existed or were in use as Chapels. ==================== Dear Sue, Have you tried the Coflein database at http://www.coflein.gov.uk/ This is sponsored by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. On the opening page, click on the 'Coflein text search' button. On the next page, select 'Chapel' from the 'Type of site' drop-down menu, and select the relevant county and/or community. The chapel entries usually indicate the status of the chapel at the time it was last visited - whether or not still in use as a chapel. As an example, entering Glasbury as the community pulls up the following list: - Glasbury Congregational Chapel, The Green, Glasbury - Glasbury Wesleyan Methodist Church, Cwmbach Chapel, Boughrood Road, Cwmbach - Llanwhimp Primitive Methodist Chapel, Ebenezer, Llanywhimp - Maesyronen Congregational Chapel, Ffynnon Gynnydd Road, Maesyronen - New Zion Primitive Methodist Chapel (Moity Chapel), Moity Road, Moity Each of the entries has a link to further details of the individual chapel, including: Grid references, Site descriptions (sometimes including historical and/or architectural details), and Status (when last visited). Note that the index can be rather quirky: for example it did not find the entry for Treble Hill Baptist Chapel under the Glasbury search, although it is included in the Coflein database. Camilla, I can't speak to what records a synagogue would keep, there's a link from GENUKI for England and Wales, "Denominations in England and Wales 1867", listing all places of worship (except for those of the Established Church) be certified to the Registrar General on payment of a fee, to the superintendent registrar of the district. [Followed "The Places of Worship Registration Act 1855"]. http://hometown.aol.co.uk/stanmapstone/page21.html I would suggest you contact the Hampshire Record Office as well as the Portsmouth Museum and Records Service to inquire as to the existence of any synagogue records and their contents. Criggion is actually in Wales but the postal address is: Criggion Hall, Criggion, Near Alberbury, Shropshire. Shropshire is otherwise known as Salop as I am sure you know. Thank you John, I thought the Treble Hill Baptist had closed from what was said on the website I visited. It appears I will have to look amongst the Methodist Chapels in the area for one that holds services on Sunday. Best wishes, Sue in Suffolk
