    3. Would you please send me the site for UK National Archives. Thanks Jean ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tomi Larson" <tomil23@hotmail.com> To: <powys@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 2:00 PM Subject: [POWYS] UK National Archives Hello List, I recently found the UK National Archives collection of nonconformist births, marriages and death records from 1567 online. The bubble was burst when I realized it would cost me $5 a hit to look at the records. (Searching is free, but to see the details is 5 credits, which translates to $5 for me in NY.) Is there anyplace to view these records free? I understand the Family History Centre in London is closing- not sure if the records were there? Also, can someone explain what RG 4, RG 5, or BT 158-160 refer to? Are these just Register references? Thank you for any explanation! 3. Hello, I am wondering if anyone can help me in my quest to find the parents of Sarah Davies ( married John Jarman abt 1836 ) . I have traced her as far as her birth (abt 1806 ) in Llandinam. I have hit a brick wall and the reason I want to go further is to either verify or put to rest family "folk lore" that we are related to David Davies also from Llandinam and one of the Welsh Heros.I am related to her thro' her daughter Charlotte Jarman who was my Gt Grandmother. My Grandmother was Jennie Edwards. Hoping some-one out there can help me. Jenny

    3. Dear Sue, Not sure whether you've found somewhere yet. I had a glance through the FIEC website and came up with one in Hay-on-Wye - is that further than you were looking for? Anyhow, this is called Bethesda Evangelical Church, is located at: Oxford Road Hay-on-Wye HR3 5AJ and the services are at 11.00 am and 6.00 pm. Apparently it used to be Wesleyan, but I don't think it is anymore. Hope this helps! This is the only Tustian marriage in this database (1813-1837). There are 5 other Hargest entries (all male), but none for the same church. One of the best means of tracking down land owners very specifically is to check the list of Tithe apportionments - a reference document compiled at the time the tithe map was drawn up.? I believe that the one for Trefeglwys dates from 1848 & in it you should be able to find the names of owners & occupiers of all the properties in the parish. You?will probably?need to go to the NLW or TNA or the Powys CAO to find Tithe apportionments, and you may need to consult a reference book by Kain & Oliver (The Tithe Maps of England & Wales) which should lead you to the right document. Hope this helps. Ruth Hi Ruth, Thanks for the suggestion. By a stroke of luck I have found that from 1588 until 1920 the land around Cwm Biga was owned by University College Oxford and was occupied by a number of tenant farmers. Given the proximity to two much bigger farms , I wonder whether one of them was subletting a portion of their land. I certainly will be looking into what the kain & Oliver book has to tell me . Fortunately my local university library has a copy. Just one thing. What do the initials NLW and TNA signify? Thanks Neil

Living with 5 of their children. Can someone tell me how I'm to find his birth information and marriage information? ===================== Dear Lillian, The 1851 census shows the eldest child still living at home with Richard and Jane was 16 years old (born circa 1834/35) so Richard's marriage to Jane was probably around the same time or earlier. Thus both his birth and his marriage took place before the commencement of civil registration in 1837. You will need to rely on church records for the marriage and church or chapel records for his baptism (in the absence of birth records). The census gives both Richard and Jane's place of birth as Brecon St Mary's, so St Mary's Church records need to be consulted. The relevant webpage on the GENUKI website states that extant records for St Mary's include: "... Baptisms 1684-1958, Marriages 1684-1976." The original parish registers are held at the National Library of Wales (Aberystwyth), with microfilmed copies at Powys Archives (Llandrindod Wells). It may be advisable also to consult the records of St John's Church (Brecon), as in the period in question St Mary's was a chapelry in St John's parish. It's quite possible that Richard was baptised in a nonconformist chapel rather than in the parish church. If so, you'll need to consult the chapel records at Powys Archives. The following notice is currently displayed on the Powys Archives website ( http://www.powys.gov.uk/ ): "Powys Archives is closed for its annual stocktake between Monday 4 February - Friday 15 February 2008." St Mary's Church, Brecon, is included in the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection' on my website at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/churches/search-fram.htm Kind regards, John -------------------- John Ball, Godre'r Graig, near Swansea, Wales, UK E-mail: john@jlb2005.plus.com John's Homepage: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/ Images of Wales: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/ Welsh Family History Archive: http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/wales/ GENUKI Breconshire Maintainer: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/ Joint Administrator - Powys (& BRE/MGY/RAD) RootsWeb mailing lists
