Pictures of: Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea (GLA); and Cwmafan/Cwmavon (GLA) Dear Listers, I have just uploaded this week's Retrospectives onto my website. They include: 1. The Dylan Thomas Centre at Swansea in the county of Glamorgan (one picture). This was one of the first 'Images of Wales' features shown on my website back in December 1997. 2. A visit to Cwmafan (Cwmavon) in the Afan Valley, county of Glamorgan (five pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in January 1999. As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week. 'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your own Retrospective requests. G`Day Listers. Can anyone please check the 1901 and 1891 census for ELIZABETH DAVIES (born Llanfyllin 1871) I am trying to find her date and place of birth. Many thanks and a Happy Easter Ian Lawson
Hi Ian, In Census 1871-1891 an Elizabeth DAVIES, daughter of Thomas DAVIES and Mary gives her place of birth as Meifod Montgomeryshire. I dont have access to the 1901. If this is her, on the 1871 original her age is given as 2 mnths. Lynne.

Well, here I am in the states having a terrible time trying to find these people. It seems that Wales had a lot of Evans and Jones that were married! I am looking for Jennie Margaret Evans born or christened July 23, 1849 in Llaneglwys, Wales. Parents were Edward Evans and Mary Jones. I have this information in a written account from my grandfathers aunt. She also noted that she was told Mary Jones was a descendant of the Welsh evangelist, Christmas Evans.....who as far as I can tell, had no children. So, here I am, hitting brick walls. Does any one have a match in their records or recommend parish records I could search? Carrie Seattle, WA
________ New Rules applied at Powys County Archives Office > > by Roger Scott Lewis > > I was rather annoyed and distressed to have full access to some schools admissions registers suddenly withdrawn from me at the Powys CAO last November, ostensibly under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998, although they come into the category of “unstructured manual documents” which are exempt from the DPA. They had for many years been freely available on the shelves of the CAO (so were already in the public domain, another reason for exemption) and I had consulted them on several previous occasions. I was told that a 100 year restriction of access would apply from now on - this is to all admissions registers since 1908 from 250 schools across the three counties - 500+ registers! To obtain access now one has to go through the Freedom of Information process or produce death certificates for the people named in the registers. I gather that the sensitive information that I and of course all other researchers must not see is the abode of the children, and the name of! the parent. Baptism entries in parish registers contain the same information but these are accessible without restrictions. I don’t understand the logic of imposing the new restriction on the schools registers but not on the PRs, or how the DPA can be cited to impose restrictions on documents exempt from the DPA. - can anyone enlighten me, please? > > By the way, in Cronicl 72, Dec 2007, Catherine Richards, County Archivist, offered her thanks to Angela Jones for transcribing the last Gladestry school log book dating 1940-1987. Several more have been digitized! No 100 year closure there then! > > It seems to me an absurdity to close the School Registers for 100 years when the same living people, same names, same dates, addresses and parents for the same parish are completely open and self-serve 6 feet away in the Parish Registers. If you wish to see them you now have to obtain permission through the Freedom of Information Act which can take 6 months to a year. These used to be YOUR public documents in YOUR public Archive and which is paid for by YOUR tax money. Now it is a private Archive! > ________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Create a handy button so your friends can add U to their buddy list. Tomi Larson <tomil23@hotmail.com> wrote: RootsWeb to be Moved to Ancestry.com. Will it just be a matter of time before Rootsweb is no longer free? ============================ Dear Listers, The full story is appended below. I see no reason to think the operation of the RootsWeb mailing lists will be affected. In particular, note the statement that: "RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together." ----------------- The following was written by Tim Sullivan, CEO of The Generations Network, Inc. and is posted here at the RootsWeb blog: http://blogs.rootsweb.com/newsroom/ As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world's oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow. As part of this goal, we have decided to "transplant" RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing. The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa. Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future. All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to feedback@rootsweb.com. Yes, Terry, I wonder! While we are on the subject of censuses--has anyone heard how the 1911 census is coming on, and will they spin it out as long as possible so that the 2009 release is delayed? Ann. --------------------------------- Rise to the challenge for Sport Relief with Yahoo! for Good
Denise et al, The dates for the censuses for the whole country are as follows: 6th June, 1841 30th March, 1851 7th April, 1861 2nd April, 1871 3rd April, 1881 5th April, 1891 31st March, 1901 Each census included all persons staying in a house, hospital etc at midnight on the date specified. The 1841 therefore covers midnight on the 6/7th June. I hope this helps.
