Dear Listers, In October 2010, 81 messages were distributed via the Powys List, a considerable improvement over September's figure, but still a disturbingly low level of activity considering the number of Powys List members. Currently there are 436 members subscribed to the List, a net increase of one on last month's figure. I hope to be able to report a more substantial increase in list activity by the end of November, although only 11 messages have so far been distributed and we are already one third of the way through the month! Hello to you all, I recently found my ggg,great-grandfather Walter Chambers on the 1841 Wales Census rejoicing in the name of Waller. Shock ,horror he is living with my ggggrandmother before their marriage which took place in Merthyr in 1846. They are living in Llangendeirne ,Llandefeilog,Kidwelly Carms.Place seems to be Gelly Day? Dog? He claims to be a M S and she appears as a FS. Having been born on a farm in Glasbury and having given his occupation as farmer in 1846 I`m wondering what he might be doing there. He gives his age as 41 though he was in fact 49.Catherine Jones is only 20 I have looked for a previous marriage for him but have so far not found one. Anyone familiar with this area? Would be grateful for pointers as to how I might find out more. Jill in Sussex.

Many thanks Lorraine for your help. I had forgotten about the Family Search Record pilot search. Those people are definitely mine but a number of the details conflict with the birth details I have been given - so it is probably another case of misinformation which I keep finding as I delve into this side of my family. I shall continue on the trail of my elusive and "story-telling" family. I have come to a solid brick wall regarding my 2 x great grandparents. I cannot find them anywhere in "Wales" and I cannot find a birth record for Ellen Charlotte Hughes in Tenby/Pembrokeshire. The date and place as those which she, herself told her family but I have not found any documentation to confirm it. Does anyone recognise this HUGHES family or have any suggestions as to where I could try next? Their details are: Francis Colburn Acheson Hughes Born: abt 1824 - Wales (date extrapolated from his death record) Died: 3 June 1862 - Monghyr, India (He was not in the army nor the East India Co; is recorded as a Vakeel in his death record, which is a sort of lawyer.) Dear Listers, I've just come across a new (to me) on-line resource which may be helpful when trying to identify and locate a Welsh place-name. The resource held by the Archive Department of Bangor University in collaboration with the Arts and Humanities Digitisation Service. It is the "Archif Melville Richards" place-name database, whose search page is at: http://www.e-gymraeg.co.uk/enwaulleoedd/amr/cronfa_en.aspx The resource is accessed via a 'User Agreement' webpage, whose terms of use have to be accepted as a condition of using the database. A typical entry in the database contains the following features: head-name, location (township, parish, pre-1974 county or other territorial designation such as commote or island), grid reference (NGR), historical form, date, source, supplementary references. Archif Melville Richards allocates a separate field to each feature. But before performing a search, I strongly advise you to follow the links to 'History & Background' and 'User Guide', near the top right of each webpage.
