Dear Listers over the last few days I have replied to a number of emails sent to the list, none of which seem to have got through. I have sent this email as a test to see if it gets through. Simon
Hello Dawn, This may/may not be of help to you but never know until you try, right? My Chambers Family who moved over the border to Wales from Hereford lived in a village called Burghill and at least one of the Chambers family married into the Walters/Warlters family there .Katherine Chambers married William Walters at Hereford Cathedral in 1746. Hereford is about 25 miles from Abergavenny so not that far away. Lots of people from that area migrated to the ironworks areas looking for work so worth a look at the Burghill Registers I would think. If you find a Burghill connection I would love to know, regards Jill. ----- Original Message ----- From: "D & H Stanton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2010 3:44 AM Subject: [POWYS] Parish Registers to search? > Hello again Listers, > > I am still searching WATERS/WALTERS and I really don't know where to look, > now. > I think I might have to search every Parish Register between Monmouthshire > and Brecon!! Hello Patrick, If you could tell us how old your grandfather was when he died ,It would help us to help you, giving us an approximate year of birth etc. Lynne.
Hello, I have just started to research my maternal grandparents who I understand were born in Montgomeryshire. My grandfathers name was Albert (Ernest?) and I believe was born in a village near Welshpool, possibly Trewern. I also understand that he was a postman before joining the Cambrian Railway. Unfortunately Grandfather and grandmother both passed away before I reached 20years, my grandfather in 1948. And all their offspring have passed away. I wonder if this name has emerged in anybody's family tree research as any information would be most helpful. Kindest regards Patrick Humby Grandson.
Welsh WW1 Prisoners in a POW camp This is an item of interest to anyone who had a relative who was taken prisoner in the Great War. I have a photo of 23 prisoners from Wales taken in a POW camp in Minden, Germany, during 1918 and someone on the list may recognise one of these as one of their relatives. My grandfather's brother, Thomas Williams, from Penmachno, was a tailor with H R Davies, Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, when he enlisted in December 1915. He was injured in August 1916 and came back for hospital treatment but returned to France again in 1917 only to be shot and captured during the Battle of Cambrai at the end of November 1917. He was taken to a POW camp in Minden and I have a number of photos taken inside the camp. The most remarkable photo is that of 23 prisoners with the caption "Some jolly boys of Wales". This postcard was sent to my mother, aged 9 at the time, on 18 May 1918. I assume that this card was also sent to at least 22 other families in Wales. The photo can be seen by visiting http://blogs.caernarfonherald.co.uk/hywelroberts/ where you can also read more about Thomas Williams in the Great War. Does anyone else have a copy of this postcard? Does anyone recognise a relative in the photo? Hywel Roberts

Hello again Listers, I am still searching WATERS/WALTERS and I really don't know where to look, now. I think I might have to search every Parish Register between Monmouthshire and Brecon!! Unfortunately, I think the family is gone before 1841 Census, so looking at BDM's pre 1837. Highly likely the name is sometimes WATERS, sometimes WALTERS. Possibility my 'tree' only flowered once in Wales, with 3xGrtGrandmother, SARAH, born abt. 1815(transported 1833) - roots may lie in a border County and migrated into Wales for the Iron Ore and/or Coal; however, I have seen a few WALTERS who may well have been around for a while. I have a few definite RECORDED FACTS. so I figure if I join the dots on the map (or somebody who knows what they're looking at, does that) some likely Parishes might emerge to be searched. Death Cert info - born Abergavenny (nothing on Baps, but could be somewhere in 'hundred of Abergavenny') - possibilty baptised elsewhere when convenient. Baptism for Sarah WALTERS in Llanelly in 1817, parents John & Sarah. (Death Cert info says parents John & Martha - could be informant error.) Court records show Sarah 16yrs in Jan, 17 yrs in Oct, 1832. Baptism can be years after birth. Known Parishes where Sarah resided (per Court Records) - St.Michael Cwmdu and St. Michael Cathedine (both searched by Powys Archives Research - no result.) LDS film for LLanelly showed a DEATH of JOHN WATERS in 1826, aged 33yrs, abode - BRYN MAWR. This is a perfect match, for someone probably at the Iron Works and leaving an 11yr old daughter, I believe, to fend for herself. No other info on Burial List. Mother may have died years previously, re-married, or simply, "left". Drawing a line from Abergavenny to Llanelly to Cwmdu and Cathedine - can somebody tell me the likely Parishes in-between, to search for BDM's re WALTERS and/or WATERS??? Apologies for lengthy query; if you have read this, thank you for your patience. Tried working it out on Genuki but ashamed to say, I keep getting lost!! Really desperate now, if I don't find anything this time round, I may have to admit defeat. All suggestions welcome and any help truly appreciated. Thank you. Kind regards, Dawn Stanton (Tasmania)
Hi Listers After contacting Legacy the problems have been more or less sorted out. The trouble-shooter on the Legacy website advised that I should download direct from one of the Legacy servers rather than the CD I have. All I had to do was type in the customer number I was given when I originally purchased Legacy 7 for the full re-install of the De Lux version. Thank you to all the listers who answered my emails. ................................................David

Hi It seems like Windows 7 has a lot to answer for! My tale is somewhat different....first I had to update the old version of Family Tree Maker which I had been running for years and therefore very familiar and easy to use (version 6).. to use on my new computer. I was informed by a helpful supplier that the best version of Family Tree maker for me was version 16 - which would still run on the new computer ( and it's new operating programme Vista) - which would be still compatible with Vista- and be OK to run my old data (on version 6) - with a "patch". Still with me? Apparently the newer versions of Family Tree Maker - now up to version 20!? and very different from the older ones......so I bought version 16 and found it worked and all my data was there....but I'm still struggling with the new gizmos to add in and update new information This problem of familiarisation has not gone away with the updating of the new computer to Windows 7 from that dreadful Vista...just makes life more complicated. The outcome is that my Family Tree maker programme is rather on the back-burner now whilst I store facts about family history in Word and Excel files. Consequently I'm not updating any family trees for the time being - which rather makes the genealogy programme redundant. One of my ancestral cousins uses Excel to produce outline family trees - that is the links between key individuals in each of several families - with separate colour coding of the names of the families, and also a box showing the abbreviations for the coding of individuals with the same name (ie John = J1 J2 J3). Using this format - including diagonal lines - it's possible to get all the main branches of a family tree including names of individuals and their brief bmd's , all on one A4 sheet. Mine is complicated on a conventional family tree using Family Tree Maker, covering lots of sheets of paper...but because one can be selective using Excel - it shows key information in a comprehensive and understandable way Hope this is of interest! Richard

Hi David Have a look at this website which is from Legacy http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDLL-OCXerrors.asp Regards Simon
I don't have experience with many family history databases, but I have used Family Historian for a few years. It is a good programme with lots of features, especially for recording sources of information. I don't know how to use them all yet ... but I am gradually getting to grips with it. Hi Mike Further my last email. I did as you wrote and Windows 7 tried to run Legacy in XP mode. The error messages disappeared but the computer still froze and hung up on shutdown. The compatibility software also finds that it is an “incompatible application” so I have uninstalled it again. Many thanks for your input..............................David
Hi Mike Thank you for your input. Yes, I did know there is a facility to run programs for previous versions of Windows but as I have only had Windows 7 for a few days I was not sure how to use it. Your explanation about it is perfectly clear and I will give it a try. .........................................David
Dear Nicola Thank you for your input. The baptism sounds as though it could be right but they have the child as male not female, so perhaps another brother of Ann. Re 1861 census you found -that IS my family. John doesn't appear in my research until 1901 census when he is living with Ann/ Johannah as her brother and his age is stated as 73yrs and place of birth Brecon Barracks. Re 1851 census - creates another problem as they are down as nephew and nieces not their children - Ho Hum! Definitely intrigueing. Thanks again for info - I really appreciate the effort you have gone to. Kind Regards Mary Australia
